are we writing a formal paper here?
damoons, I would hope I could, but there were some pics I didn’t put up of Tigers that were more in that grayish blue tone and the stripes weren’t very vivid. In fact, you could hardly seen them. I personnaly would go with the head shape on these sharks, so yes, I think I would know the difference, but there alot of people, many fishermen included that don’t give sharks much attention, that when they saw a 14’ Tiger that was that fat and didn’t have very noticable stripes, and had the grayish blue color would jump to the conclusion that is was a white shark.
I do think the thermocline, if cold enough, could play a part with their movements. I am not really that interested in it, but I could see it affecting them.
About the head, if he would have described the head as 4.5’ wide and pointed, then we might not have had this discussion.
Another shark is the shortfin mako. They can get to 13’ and 1700 lbs and said to come into shallower water in July and August. I have never heard of one of them that close either, but you never know. Their head would be more like a white shark also.
I would have liked to have seen the shark your buddy saw. Too bad he didn’t have a camera. Maybe someone else will see it this weekend. Maybe not this weekend though as the weather is not looking good for Sat!!!
There was a post last year in the “Up North” folder of a Great White off Murrels Inlet and I believe there was a picture. I believe it was Spring not summer. I can’t find it but I know it was there.

Pogys are now coming back toward Shallotte inlet after haning out off Long Beach for a couple of weeks. This morning they were just west of the Holden Beach pier.
Kings have been on and off. Still catching some at Lighthouse Rocks and 390s as well as some Cobia. Otherwise they’ve been pretty hard to come by.
Spanish bite red hot in 20 feet of water all along beachfront
Dolphin bite should be good. Reports from south of us say there are more fish coming. We are fishing the Stream Saturday.
Also- congratulations to Capt. Brant fishing school graduate Raymond Delpezzo and angler Anthony Hinman who landed a 53 pound Mahi last weekend while fishing inshore of the Steeples. NICE FISH!
See you on the water !!
Now for that fishing story:
My wife and I went diving/spear fishing on Wednesday. We set up on a “top secret” wreck in 100 feet of water. We were on our way to the bottom and encountered a thermocline at 50 feet, temps down to mid 60’s- brrrrr. Amy taps me on the shoulder and gives me the “shark” signal (hand over forehead) and points to our back quarter. I look into dark bluish mist and all I can see is BIG tail and BIG dorsal fin- can’t make out the body or head. First thing I think is OK, not good – if the Shark is this high off the bottom its not one of the fairly docile Sand Tigers we encounter- this is a “sport shark” I call them – mid to top water, fast and possibly hungry for us! The BIG shark is moving up our right side, gliding and slowly coming into view. I can see the fins clearly and and start making out the body- I begin going thru my mental catalog. First and most likely choice is Bull Shark - pretty common. Nope, this shark is BIG and the tail is more half moon shaped, not off-center like a Bull, plus the body is too long whereas a Bull is more stubby. I then think BIG Hammerhead, I"ve seen them that big before. Dorcal and Tail is very straight and body shape similar, but I can’t quite see the head.
man yall are tough on my fishin partner. he types this crap on his phone most the time. hahaaa… hopefully next time damoons i wont b sailin
ft worry.

1st BS: 54" wide head. 2nd BS: 1700lb mako. Biggest one ever brought back dead was 1324 lbs. Now a whale sharks head is about 5’ wide on average and those are much bigger and wider than any other shark in the sea. Had about a 20-25’ bump into us offshore in Florida and he was about 4’ wide so I call, and only call, BS on the 4 1/2 ft head width.

They do prefer the colder waters however we must remember the thermocline around here is just perfect for em.
Rupert Wade, 57 July 15, 1957 Great white shark Killed while swimming in the surf at Atlantic Beach, Salter Path, Carteret County, North Carolina.
If moons says it was a white, it was a white. Some of you people would rather mess with someone on this site than fish. GO FISHING AND SHUT UP.
Any man that doesn’t know how to catch a fish, shouldn’t disgrace a fish, by catching it.
barbawang, I know. Just playing around too.
Phleuger or floridaboy, Who woke you up? Thanks for your expert testimony! I agree a 4.5’ head is probably over estimated. Take your beef about the mako up with wikipedia. Call them and see if you can get them to revise their data. I am sure they will take your word I mean you are Phleuger reelman for cryin out loud. from wiki for shortfin mako: The largest reported male specimen weighed 454 kg (1,000 lb) and measured 4.02 m (13.2 ft), although a near record-sized female shortfin mako measuring 3.96 m (13.0 ft) weighed 794 kg (1,750 lb).
watermon, you forgot to add this one from teh 1800’s
Crew member of a pilot boat
ca. 1840
Killed while treading water awaiting rescue after being accidentally knocked overboard in Charleston Harbor, Charleston County, South Carolina. Witnesses estimated the shark to be 25 feet long. Not confirmed but believed to be a Great White.
Reybann1, this is a discussion board right? you didn’t add to the discussion. you get on here and by type GO FISHING AND SHUT UP in all caps which I take that as yelling at us to shut up, which I am willing to bet that you would never do anyones face on here!
Captain Brant sounds credible to me. Glad I gave up diving a few years back.
I remember Coastal University tagging one of Murrels Inlet a couple years ago in their shark study, cant remember what time of year though.
.
Caught a 9 ft Bull Shark yesterday and watched a 11 ft Tiger eat a dead Sea Turtle floating around. I was about to toss a bait to him but another boat came up and spooked him before I could put a bait in his face.

I have fished against Capt. Brant and the McMullan family from the late 90’s into the mid 2000’s in SKA and assorted pelagic tournaments along the NC and SC coast while being a mate on the “Undertaker”. Capt Brant and his family are an extremely honest, humble, polite, personable and one of the most professional families in the sport. They run a top notch and very successful charter business out of Ocean Isle, NC. I was very surprised to see him post on this forum, one because of his humbleness, and two, because of the outlandish and pompous ■■■■■■■■ from members on the forum. You all are true to your form.
All I can say is, Im glad to see you and your wife, Capt. Brant, are alive to pass on this amazing story!
