Don’t think for one second that Mr Whitey is not here. June 1989, We ( The crew of the CMV “BONSAI”) caught the largest GW, 16’ 7", ever landed in SC. True it was on a longline (28 miles off Bulls Bay). We actually caught 2 that summer. The second being 8’. I can’t count the number of large sharks that we would pull up that were bitten off right behind the head by something very big! Or looking at a 16’ hammerhead that head 40" bites taken out of it like corn on the cob. Robert Olsen (Knot @ Work) can verify about the big white, as his family still has its head. His brother was the most experienced shark fisherman in the state, and he seemed to catch a couple every year. We did see a 16’-17’ Tiger at the Garden last week, came in on the chum bag, and we got a good look at it. This is the 2 nd time we have seen this fish at the Garden in the last month.

“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”
DNR got one on camera a couple of years ago in July.
But it really doesn’t matter. I call any shark over 12’ a “**** in my pants shark”, because that’s exactly what I am going to do if I am spearfishing and one comes swimming up next to me!

I know for a fact that DNR got a picture of one from a motion camera on a baited pot late last May out of Little River. They don’t release the photos so I can’t post it.
14’ Pamlico 140 Angler w/ rudder
Kayak, SCUBA, or both.
I have a good friend who dives out of MI and last year just after Thanksgiving, he saw two in one week. One was about 10’ and the other was a monster, both were in about 90’ of water.
I ran charters out of Pompano beach FL and Miami Beach FL since the early 70’s. During that time there were several Great Whites caught. None were giants usually around 6 to 10’. Prior to my arriving in FL there had been several large whites seen feeding on a dead whale floating off Pompano Beach. I only saw one white and it was large, probably around 15’. It was tailing on a current rip about 2 miles off Miami Beach. This only points out that although they do prefer colder temps, there are no fences out there and they can swim where ever they chose. Maybe they follow pods of whales or other food sources but they can pop up anywhere.

I would expect them to be here more in the warm waters with all the other sharks that come in. There is a time where fish are in great numbers during certain times of the year but that doesnt mean that they ALL leave in the off season. Here are some vids of GWS in the warm water of South Africa.
It was 4 years ago now. 13-14 foot Great White on Morris Island. They think it got caught in the sandbars and drowned while trying to feed. It was a beast!
I never knew a shark sighting could generate a thread of this magnitude, let alone some of the venemous comments posted. I know it can be difficult to ID sharks and that any really big one is going to be id’d as a great white. Fox News just did the same thing a week ago, IDing a photo as a GW, but the story was about a Mako, just landed, that weighed just over 1000lbs (certified scales, I believe). In the Charleston case, only the eyewitnesses truly know what they saw and if they are as experienced as purported, I for one am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Scientifically, it is distinctly possible that a GW was present in these waters, this time of year. As has been correctly stated, access to the gulf stream and thermoclines can allow for cooler waters. GWs do PREFER the more temperate waters, but folks in Australia will tell you that almost every year there is an encounter with a GW in the warmest months, in warm water. There are no fenses in the ocean, indeed.

Stanford, transmitters, population estimate… I don’t know if PETA members speak British, but I think 23 has a point. except that the way I read it, there are fewer great whites than there are mammalian, feline-type tigers.
