We were outfitted for Sheepshead at 4KI, and set out early only to get turned back twice by waves. (Maybe I should take my neighbor’s advice and buy the Grady.)
We decided to try our luck in the Sound, and set up in a couple of spots around the Green Cans that I had marked in the past.
The fishing Gods decreed that we would spend our day catching Southern Whiting, which are here in number and spawning. We caught about 20, as well as a good sized Bonnethead, and a few undersized BSBs.
Wind and waves definitely put a damper on an otherwise beautiful day, but we made the best of it with Gloria Cubana cigars and original Coors. No complaints.
Sometimes it’s good we don’t know where the weather man lives.
We tried nearshore, trolled a couple of passes, caught one false albacore and gave up. Water temp was 64.5 degrees around 50 feet. Temperatures seem good for some nearshore activity if we can catch a break on wind and waves.
Not dangerous but not fishable. Run back at 12 knots, miserable.
Weather man (aka lying b*****d) says Thursday and Friday will be ok. Here’s hoping.
follow up
I wasnt about to let those Fiddlers go to waste, so took them up to Mt. P. and used them to catch some nice Sheepshead (7) and a stud Black Drum.
Man, I’ve been down in Fripp all this week, and it has been an absolute grind. The wind was insane for the past few days, and I’ve barely found anything consistent. Fished every tide cycle, early and late, shallow flats, creeks, the inlet, using live crabs and artificials. Was able to boat a few trout, only one of which was legal. I kinda don’t know what else I can do. I’ve already spent way more than I needed to on gas and bait. Hoping tomorrow’s calmer weather will bode something good. Maybe I’ll run over to the sound and try and find some whiting.
