Mostly for me this site fills in the void when I can’t make it out fishing. I agree with what a lot of you are saying but as for the attitude of some of the people responding on this site, ignore them. Gonna happen anywhere and everywhere. Who cares. Even when there are only 5 replies, there are hundreds, sometimes thousands of people that read and enjoy what is said. Don’t let the one arogant/ignorant post stop you from having fun posting if you like to. Kinda had a post like that I did myself in the inshore reports a bit ago in “opinions on a bad charter” which some may not think is helpful but seemed reasonable to me to comment on that one.

my kids no longer get excited seeing their picture on the internets
in the past, I’ve posted reports and gotten my [too thin skinned] feelings hurt when others more experienced [which is most of this audience] ridiculed me or poked fun at me. believe me, there’s plenty to poke fun at."

ME TOO.
I think I need to be more like Penny though. not in the sense of abusing and humiliating my dog. she posts great content and pix. and i love her attitude.
There does seem to be a lot of sniping and thread hijacking at times but I try not to get caught up in that stuff. I have made friends here and learned oh so much and really appreciate CF as a source of information and friendship. For those of you that have anything to report, don’t let the jerks dissuade you from reporting, most of us appreciate and enjoy the posts. I live vicariously through many of you since it is hard to get down there and get on the water. So don’t stop!

Thread sniping and jerky butt-in/hijack is an internet phenomenon–not a CF.com phenomenon.

Good ■■■■■■■■ from most and a couple that were not really surprising. For anyone that likes to post, but does not want to deal with the few that like to harass people I will be happy to grant access to the Captain’s Reports pages. This is a post only forum and do not allow replies from anyone. If you are interested you can let me know via email at andy@charlestonfishing.com I think most peope just enjoy reading reports and are not really concerned with a particular spot as much as what technique worked for you. I generally do not post where I fished, but more about how I fished because the same techniques will work in many different places. I can certainly understand the concern of Palmetto Bug that posting a particular spot will bring a crowd quickly. The truth is you will waste a bunch of time “hot shotting” to wherever you heard the latest bite is happening, where if you take a little time and learn an area, you can enjoy some great fishing. It is amazing how many fish we drive by to get to the next spot.
quote:Same for me! I've made ALOT of wonderful friends via this site as well as gained some valuable offshore tips, namely from Scott Cothran, aka, Scoutin4goodies (or something of such!)and Russ Broward (aka RussB, or, again, something of such!) As you can see, I know lots of these folks by their real names, although I've never met some in person, for example, Scott...) I know personally lots of folks who do know Scott personally who speak quite highly of him. He reached out to me and my husband when we first bought our Contender and, literally, went our of his way to share with us some of his secrets. Yep, I know this is in the "Inshore Discussion thread," but I'm making a point, nonetheless.

I highly agree with Carl in that you get from this site what you put into it! I’ve never had my feelings hurt one bit as I truly respect the opinion everyone even if his/her opinion differs from mine!

Originally posted by CaptDanGreat topic PeaPod. For me, when the majority of comments people posted in response to my reports seemed to be smart assed and unappreciative I quit posting. I used to write up what I thought were nice helpful reads for people with lots of useful info but why bother and waste my time if im only going to get annoyed later. Bottom line is, though I still fish several days every week and am still fine with sharing info and helping people out the general attitude on this site has changed for the worse. Those who can truly fish have nothing to prove on an internet fishing site, much less one where people are going to talk crap about those who actually post helpful things on here. I took a long break from this site and just started to look at it again in the last couple weeks maybe I 'll post a good helpful report again in the near future but it doesnt matter much to me if I do or not.
CaptDan pretty much hit the nail on the head for me. I used to post a lot…was accused of bragging, nagging, lying, stealing, snooping, being old, being an a$$hole, being a jerk and on and on…Just got a little old for me, especially when someone would post something about me that was so far from the truth it was laughable.
This actually spilled over in to my personal life and caused some rather awkard moments around some people…not that I really gave a crap about how these people felt, but sometimes there were others around that just did not need to or want to be involved.
I have been told by dozens of people that they do not and will not post here due to the possible (probable) comments they might (would) get.
I did have a great trip today…caught over 40 reds and 5 keeper trout all on mud minnows…6 dozen mud minnows to be exact.
reelly…
I too spend a LOT of time “lurking” on the site and do occasionally post. I enjoy the majority of the posts and have even made a lunch at Bessies to put some faces with the screen names. I try to live by the adage of “if you don’t have anything nice to say, keep quiet” but it does get tough at times having to bite my tounge with some of the pot stirrers. I live in Cola and am pretty much limited to two weeks a year at Folly so although I love the low country I am in no way a threat to the resource. I did just finally buy a 19’ Hydra Sports Bayskiff so maybe someday… long story even longer…keep up the posts, don’t have to give up spots but please do share tactics and baits.
“why don’t you post…”
Usually I don’t have anything to post about! Lately, most trips have been unsuccessful. But even then I sometimes post. When there is something to mention, I try to make a point of letting everyone know where, when, and how. I figure I’ve learned a lot from a few on here so I kind of feel obligated to reciprocate. As for all the other garbage…not interested in that except it does make for some interesting reading while I’m eating lunch!

Peapod… totally with you on the “trying to be more like Penny”. I always feel guilty posting no pics but it’s such a pain… until now… Thanks BONZO! Yep, it worked. Just did a test, bud.
As per the topic, I actually like posting to either let the average joe know how another average joe did that day PLUS instead of a log, I use the search function to go back in time and see how I did at certain times of the year. I leave key clues for myself so I remember where I fished (muddy water/clear, water temp, tide, current, bait… well, okay, it’s almost always cut mullet on the bottom underneath a dock for me… “almost” always though… kind of lame but I dig it).
Also, hell yeah I love reading others post… especially when I’m not able to get out. Definitely have noticed less & less people posting but hopefully that changes. Also have noticed that the amount of “views” have not gone down so there are still plenty of people out there reading.
Peapod - Thanks for starting a great topic!
quote:I totally agree with Quint in regard to being ridiculed for posting reports (or for any other reason). I visited this sight for several months before registering for fear of being chastised about asking "dumb" or "ignorant" questions. CF.com is my favorite website and, in my opinion, the best source around for learning about the sport we all love.
Originally posted by QuintI say keep posting reports and ignore the idiots. I enjoy reading and learning from them and I’m sure many agree with me.

I post becuase every time I am able to go fishing or just be out on the water I come back feeling like Im about to bust wide open with happiness and just want to share it with someone…esp the times spent with my daddy, donnie and Roo. When all else in life seems to go to poop…the water seems to bring sanity back to my life and remind me of whats important. And theres always something new to see or learn. I enjoy reading others posts…esp. when there are pics of kids and people with their “first catchs”’'you know …those folks who arent worried about tide, wind, lure type or technique…all they know is that they caught a fish!!!..and the grins on their faces speak volumes!! Sometimes I make a post and then say…I bet folks are getting tired of my ramblings and pics…then someone says it made them smile…gave them a chace to pause for just a minute in their busy day…made them laugh…and want to come rescue ROO :)…so I keep posting. theres many days we dont “catch” a whole lot…but even then we are still blessed to be able to go when so may cant. I too am grateful for the many friends I have met by posting here.

I like to read certain peoples post more than others. I’m slowly becoming a semi-local and have met a LOT of great people here. And I want to personally thank EVERY POSTER that gave up a tip here and there, what plastic color is working when, what tide is good to fish, etc etc. Bad Habit, SellsFish, DaMoons, StretchArmstrong, YOU TOO PENNY, and I like Phin’s posts(!), all you gotta do is put into this site what you exptect to get out of it.
As soon as I can post something good about actual RESULTS I’ve had fishing / diving, I will. Or, take some of Penny’s ideas like the fine posts just bein out there! NICE!
i wish i was good enough fisherman to post my sucess, that being said i have learned a lot from those who do post, if you do not post that is up to you, but i would appreciate any and all advice as would my two sons who have taken to fishin. so i agree with quint please share so we can all enjoy this great sport in a great location

I don’t post as much as I used to because I am becoming a better fisherman. When I joined the site in 2006 I was beyond clueless. When me and my boys caught our first redfish (each about 15") it was a huge event for us. From then every day fishing was worth posting about as we learned. Personally, I learned probably 60% of what I know by picking up nuggets here and there on this site. Since I have joined SSWA I have learned SO much its not even believable to me. I do tend to post on the clubs private forums now because the environment is encouraging and family friendly. No politics or sports forum participation for me. You will see me post when a newbie asks for help or to congratulate a nice catch. I’ll sometimes post a notable catch, for me that would be OTF or something like that. Like Bonzo said, you get out of the site what you put in. If you don’t post because you might get flamed, then the terrorists win. My opinion.
