Winter Surf Report

I went out on a scouting trip with Grace today. It was cold and windy. We decided if we were rolling out that we would pick up some shrimp, and bring a rod or two. We weren’t expecting a whole lot, but were pleasantly surprised to bag a few. We found a decent trough and started to work it. First cast hit the water, and we had a fish on immediately within a couple of seconds. Reeled her in, and as she was a red. Itch Scratched. We kept up and landed 3 more reds within the hour, totaling 4 for the day. Then bite shut down as quick as it started. I guess it was right time, right place kind of thing. The tide was out going, a couple of hours before dead low. They hit on frozen shrimp. Nothing else was caught. I didn’t even see any bites. No ray’s, no whiting, no nothing. The reds were small, but happy to get out with my Gal and enjoy the outdoors. Take care folks.

heck ya man! I was tempted to get out this morning too, but the cold of outside and my warm bed/coffee kept me in haha.

Great pics Pete , also good to see Grace out again!!!:sunglasses::sunglasses:

Good to hear from Y’all. Papa if it wasn’t for the brief bite I would have gotten the goose egg. Just part of fishing. Gail my pup got her pup! Got to roll, little Pete broke his arm Friday, heading down town, hopefully just for a cast, and not any worse. When it rains it pours, think wife may possibly have the flu too.

Thanks for report. Pretty darn good for this time of year.

Hope everybody’s doing better.

Prayers for little P , hate to heat that ,keep us posted

good to hear theres a bit of activity! i tried myself over the weekend on the florida border and actually got 2 runs on the shark rod, a couple whiting, and of all things a nice 40" bull red. ill definitely be back with the shark rod very soon to get that monkey off my back.

All is well Wally. Slapped a cast on Pete and He’s good to go. Fishing wise I have tried to be in tune with patterns, but have also learned patterns are broken. I’m guessing most day’s this time of year the fishing will be dead, but I will have to concede that it’s possible to catch reds in the dead of winter, in the surf. If it was one, maybe it could have been called luck. I’m glad I went and learned something. 40 inch red and Mr. Parker have told me this, but I was hesitant to go. Mr. Parker has stated several times that February is “truly” the only month that is dead, I missed February by two days. It may very well be that reds can be landed every month of the year. Still growing, still learning, the hard way, but learning. OhioNavyNuke that is a hell of a fish for this time of year. You got to get you one of those tarpon in Florida. For me that’s the holly Grail. Probably will never occur. I know of only one of my buddies to land one surf fishing from the beach.I believe it was local, and like ten years ago.Cut bait. I will post a pic of him and his Pop, his pop caught it. It was a doozy. Just give me a second. The pics from his phone alway’s come out sideways. If someone knows how to turn it, do so, the fish deserves it. I appologize before hand if I can’t get it turned.

Success:smiley:

wow!!! ive seen several where i fish at very close to the beach (fernandina beach, fl) but am yet to catch one. starting in early to mid july the beach gets flooded with menhaden schools and predators follow. although ive seen countless tarpon while chasing schools in my kayak, ive never hooked up. the closest ive been is tossing a live menhaden right where one jumped just seconds earlier, hooking up a minute later, and reeling in a 4ish foot blacktip shark lol. granted shark fishing is VERY fun from the kayak but also disappointed to see i didnt get the tarpon i JUST CASTED AT!!! ive also rammed one with my kayak since it surfaced in front of me before it could stop. its a definite goal before i leave the area, but getting a sleigh ride from sharks is fun too

Thats incredible Mr. Nuke. That will get the adrenaline pumping. I’m like a bull in a china shop on those yaks. Don’t think I could stomach that. Your passion for fishing is inspiring, thank you. Can’t wait to see that tarpon, you will get um. Enjoy your sleigh ride and be careful:smiley:

kayaking in the ocean is a whole different animal, let alone shark fishing/combining the two, but look where i came from. i grew up fishing lake erie for yellow perch and walleye, rivers and creeks for smallmouth bass, catfish, carp, rock bass, …, and ponds for the normal bass, bream, and catfish. although i had plenty of experience in canoes, the yak was a whole different experience and picking up saltwater fishing with consistent catches once i decided to serve in the navy was like learning how to fish all over again. i surely didnt go from walleye to shark yakking overnight, but if you keep your mind open to new experiences you never know what you might reel in. stand by for new shenanigans as i have a couple buddies into drones and we definitely tested flying out an 8oz pyramid weight with a big piece of cut whiting. worked like a champ!

I hooked a big tarpon off of Edisto near where the creek dumps out maybe 4 summers ago… 6 inch finger mullet is what he hit. never had a chance, line went across its back in the shallow water and it was all over in 30 seconds at the most

Hooked a big spinner shark in the same area later that afternoon and same thing happened. fun day nonetheless

Northchucky My buddy and his pop were surf fishing for reds. Can you imagine when his dad reeled that in, what an incredible day for them. They played their cards right to beach that fish. Props to his pop, he is a hell of a fisherman. His son ain’t to bad either. I’m going to have to ask him what # test he used. I know his son runs 30.

There you go Pete 4 reds isn’t a bad day at all and in January to get a beach day and catch fish I know yall both went home smiling. I hope this report encourages some people. The water is the warmest I can remember for January it was colder in December. Temp ranges from 54 to 64, I’ve been seeing a lot of 58-62 degree areas in the creeks.

That’s incredible!

I was totally outgunned for what I was trying that day. You live, you learn
