We are headed into January, which is normally one of the coldest months in Charleston. I say normally because if you have lived in Charleston long enough you know there is no such thing as normal when it comes to our weather. While, there is still some excellent fishing, the weather often limits our opportunities to spend some quality time on the water. To prevent a serious case of “cabin fever” anglers find different ways to get their fishing fix. Here are just a few ways to help ease the pain over the next couple of months.
Read about fishing: The number of magazines about fishing increases every day. You will also find that there are a number of good books on fishing, which include informative and entertaining topics. The Internet has also opened up many avenues to find information on just about any fishing topic you are looking for (using a good search engine like google will make this a much more enjoyable experience http://www.google.com ). I always look at the winter as a time to learn and prepare for the upcoming season. I try to get a good balance of new techniques and brush up on good ole basics as well.
Review and buy new tackle: There are always some great product reviews in the magazines and plenty of brand new “must have” products will be arriving in stores. Nothing cures the blues like spending a little money and getting new tackle.
Watch shows about fishing: There are so many fishing shows on television now you can almost always find one to watch. These shows are designed to be entertaining and if you are not careful, you may even learn something.
Attend shows: Charleston has two shows in the month ofJanuary. The Castlow Shallow Water Expo will be held at the North Charleston Convention Center January 11th and 12th. (For more information click on their ad on our home page) The Charleston Boat show will be held at the North Charleston Coliseum January 30th - February 2nd. Both shows will feature plenty if merchandise, boats and informative seminars.
