Shrimping a decent area also known for some poons the other day, and here pulls up about a 20-25 year old guy and a buddy in a decked out 60K plus bay boat with his website on the side, and ask us if we have “seen any big fish”…I mean decked out…really? come on…what happened to having a jon boat for your first boat
I saw a fully rigged new 23-24’ Ranger Bay about 6 weeks ago in the harbor that had me saying the same thing. I took consolation that that my 9 year old son and I were easily outfishing them.

We were out about 9 miles off Hatteras, parked over an artificial reef and a multi hundred thousand dollar 30 plus footer kept coming through trolling.
We had like 4 guys and my 11 year old son onboard fishing pinfish off the bottom. Just as he made a close pass we got a double hook up of 30lb plus amberjacks. We boated the fish and then hooked up a total of 5 more all within an hour or two.
The cost of my 19’ seapro, not that much
catching fresh bait on sabikis, $5.00
the look on those anglers faces before they took off , Priceless
How can you be so sure his parents bought him the boat? Perhaps he’s a hardworking and ambitious young man who got a loan, bought a boat, and is working his ass off to pay it off? Seems like a pretty obtuse assumption to me. Perhaps a case of boat envy?
I see my share of those big high-end boats with young guys on them myself. I try not to make assumptions as to how they aquired them, but it is possible that at least some of them had “parental assistance” with their purchase. I wasn’t that lucky. My first boat was a canoe, and 2nd a jon boat. I moved my way up as I could afford to do so. I know that looking back now as an older guy who worked and paid for it all, I appreciate it more. I also know that I am a better fisherman because I fished on what I could afford at the time and took a long time learning and developing my skills. It took a lot more effort because my early boats were small and slow. They allowed me to search for fish in smaller, closer water and to try alternate techniques rather than race from one spot to another. I can tell you that I never had a fish tell me what a small, ugly boat I had. The fisherman catches the fish. The boat is simply a means to get to them.
I agree regarding “assuming”…And I know that a lot of younger guys have worked hard to earn the money to buy / put down / finance a wonderful fishing machine…However, these 30k flats boats and 60k bay boats I have seen ran by some younger guys have to have backing especially regarding the current state of our economy…(which is ok)…not many kids 20-25 years of age have that strong of a line of credit / down payment…I’m not trying to start a “class war”, just pointing out that its a little ridiculous sometimes…although I do not envy, just don’t seem to understand (again that is OK, just an opinion)

By the time I was 25, I had my first boat paid for. And my parents gave me nothing for it. I also had managed to pay off my college (they didn’t pay a cent) and my truck. I also had been putting money aside for retirement for 3 years by that point. I am very frugal, don’t waste money, and only spend on something I really want WHEN I find an amazing deal. Why do you assume this kid was given anything? He could just have made good decisions. Why don’t you just worry about fishing and not about what you wih you had?
would you guys just get off your “all kids work hard for everything they got and if daddy pays for everything than who cares” high horse. JEEEZ. Let me see these young guys with all their expensive boats and jacked up trucks, fast 012 cars and hot young girlfriends and let me crack on them and cut them down if I want. Yes, its probably because I am envious sometimes, I worked my but off when I got out of school too and did alright for myself but I never could and never will afford hotrod cars or boats, im too old now. So leave me be, sometimes I wish I had that stuff or were able to give it to my kids and I will crack on those young guys (or you older guys with awesome boats) but usually Im perfectly content and its in good fun. I still can fish inshore or offshore whenever I want but if I want to sound off on a young guy from time to time whooooo caaaaaares. (I’ll step down from my box now)
