And Jack Taylor, if someone threatens my grandson like that, he will most definitely find himself in a situation he would rather not be in.

And getting into a profanity-laden shouting match with the guy will definitely be a positive influence on your grandson? Not. Better to walk away.
You don’t know me very well Optiker. I would never do such a thing in front of my grandchild. But I do have quite a few connections in the field of law enforcement. DNR, DHEC, Charleston County, Dorchester County, Beaufort County, and I do know how to write down numbers and take photos. Do that to my grandchild and I will do eveything I can to be sure they pay the price the legal way. It would not be the first time some one has paid a hefty price for thumbing their nose about wildlife regulations. Don’t jump to conclusions of what some one means so quickly.
It does not do much good to confront someone like that directly. If someone purposely keeps an oversized fish or over the limit, they probably would not have much of a problem getting violent over someone trying to correct their abuse of our resources. Better to inform the DNR.
As of now, I’m putting the DNR number in my phone and will call it in next time I see this happen.
I’m glad to see such passion on here about the subject. While most of you have been living here a lot longer than I have, I love this area and feel it’s all of our duty to protect the resource and play by the rules.
These guys who have the “you catch it, you kill it” mentality piss me off to no end.
Instead of approaching it in such a manner as a negative thing, it may be easy to take this chance to teach a lesson in the proper way to vent a large fish coming from that depth in the hopes that it will live. This may get the point across that the fish was to big and that it needed to be released.

I apologize for jumping to conclusions. It’s easy to do so when so many ppl on this site have the reaction “you should chuck a bank sinker at them” etc. To be fair
It was hard for me to walk away from that situation that day. My little grandson is living with us for a while, and I knew it was a no win. I called operation game thief that day. I also keep 2 different DNR officer’s cards in my wallet. I called one of them and let him know of the situation. About 2 weeks later we were in that park again riding bikes and went by the fishing dock. One of the officers was on that dock writing tickets to some of the same people for illegal fish and no license. In the end, I made the better choice.

You made the correct call walking away - it takes more of a man to do that than it does to stay and fight. Even if you had a gun, pepper spray and an Uzi.
In the past I’ve said something. Once it turned into a shouting match, once a guy pulled a gun on me.
Now I offer to take their picture… and give that to DNR
Yep, good call. I’m not saying don’t report it, I’m saying not to start a confrontation over it. A fish isn’t worth a fight, verbal or physical, and it sure isn’t worth getting shot over. Walk away. Especially if kids are involved.

I apologize for jumping to conclusions. It’s easy to do so when so many ppl on this site have the reaction “you should chuck a bank sinker at them” etc. To be fair, you didn’t explain yourself in your post and it’s easy to jump to conclusions. I agree with your approach, and in fact I should not talk because I got into it with a golf ranger once when he made a remark to my son. So, I’m sorry and I retract my statement
Operation game thief. These type people make me sick and they need to be dealt with. There is no reason why you have to get directly involved, but reporting things like that is something we all should do.

That’s a good number to keep. Take a picture of the Boat I.D. or write it down. The more info you can give DNR the better. Boat color, how many in the boat, what color/type clothing they are wearing, approx. height, time, engine type on boat, … the more detail the better.
What really gets me is why keep a big spot tail? Anything over 28" doesn’t eat good (imo). those “little” legal ones are the best eating anyway.
edit… A few high dollar tickets will go a long way in keeping the fish pirates from continuing their greedy shenanigans. When people realize that there is serious consequences for crime they usually think a little before doing it. I think some really get their jollies off by getting away with bringing home an illegal fish.
those big uns eat great, gut, scale, put in a foil tent with the fixings and broil that sucker.
something to think about- there are many many old school people in this area that would never think about taking a dime of welfare, but would keep an illegal fish or deer to feed their family if needed.

That is a fact and the same here. Times are hard and a lot of people are hungry, but you have to use judgement and common sense too. And your conscience. Somebody in a $35,000 flats or bay boat probably isn’t subsistence fishing. A family fishing on a dock wearing shoes with holes may be.

There are still quite a few outlaws out there. There’s an 85 year old man in Ridgeland, never worked a real job in his life but God only knows how many deer, shrimp, and fish he has sold. Never got caught.

Dockman, if you are truly hungry enough to risk the fine and can prove it to me, I can help you on food and those Old school people you mention. I can also find work, it will be hard work, but work non-the-less. The kind of work that would make most people seek the free ice cream.
I think you are taking it a step past the guy that can afford a boat and make it to the jetties. Do you think a person that can take a boat to the jetties is going hungry??? I hope not.
By the way, if I knew a hard working person fishing from the banks that caught a couple of spot tail past his/her limit or over size, I’d never say a word. Big difference and I believe deep in your heart you know it.
