Whats up with that??

Columbia, SC (WLTX)- News 19 has confirmed University of South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp has decided to part ways with the program’s chaplain, Adrian Despres.

Adrian Despres has been the Gamecock Football Chaplain for more than a decade. There was no reason given for his departure from the team.

Last year, The Freedom from Religion Foundation wrote a letter of complaint to the University of South Carolina president Harris Pastides. They were asking for Despres to be removed as chaplain from USC’s football program.

According to the statement, The Freedom From Religion Foundation says the team chaplain Adrian Despres’ violated constitutional guidelines against publicly funded institutions engaging in religious exercises.

The organization sent a similar letter to Clemson last April. Clemson responded with a formal letter refuting the allegations.

News 19 will continue to follow this story on air and online as more information becomes available.

Gamecock Football Fires Chaplain
RIGHT MOVE? OR POLITICALLY-CORRECT BLUNDER?
WWJD? Don’t ask “Coach Boom …”

University of South Carolina head football coach Will Muschamp has parted ways with the program’s chaplain, Adrian Despres.

“Adrian was not retained because Coach Muschamp’s philosophy is to have not just one voice, but multiple voices available to assist with the spiritual development of the student-athletes,” South Carolina athletics department spokesman Steve Fink confirmed.

News of the decision was first reported by Gamecock football message boards – one of which claimed Muschamp told Despres he wanted an “inclusive” program that didn’t have Jesus as “a distraction.”

Despres didn’t confirm that alleged comment, saying he “never really talked to (Muschamp).”

Despres had served as South Carolina’s football chaplain for the last sixteen years – including the school’s unprecedented run of national success between 2011-13 under former head coach Steve Spurrier.

Despres’ termination comes amid an ongoing national culture war – one that recently embroiled Clemson University’s football program. According to the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation – which filed a complaint in 2014 – Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney‘s program was (and is) a veritable den of proselytizing.

A vocal Christian, Swinney rejected the organization’s – saying “ain’t nothing (going) to change.”

Ah, Dabo.

He was right, though: Nothing did change, and earlier this year the group renewed its threat of a lawsuit against the Clemson program.

This website has grudgingly embraced the Godless heathens in this particular battle … odd given our usual contempt for such politically-correct nonsense.

“As much as we hate to give such political correctness the time of day, the God-haters have a point here,” we wrote recently. “As long as government remains in the business of higher educat

WTF? Was the Chaplain having a “sermon” everyday? Was he proselytizing during practices? In the locker room?

And now they want a hijab at the Citadel…

I’m curious what 23Ricky knows about this. Not in the CUvsSC way, but I know he hears things and knows things. This s just kind of incredulous to me

Why? People get fired or let go from their jobs all the time.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

I know nothing, I see nothing, I hear nothing.

This seems like the PC police getting their way to me. Personally I appreciate what Dabo has done standing up for what he believes is right and I agree with him wholeheartedly. The possible consequences associated with what Dabo is doing are making young men more morally responsible and self aware. The best thing I can say about what Muschamp is doing is that USC is not directly contributing to the growth and maturation of young men, many of which desperately need it.

Those with the ability to do the right thing, have the obligation to. Someone famous said that, but you could also look to Proverbs 3:27.

Unfortunately, this is the path that most public schools are having to take to please the liberal agenda. Kudos to Dabo for standing up to it for so long.

Why does a football team need a chaplain? I’m scratching my head on that one.

Because Hoppy thinks they do.

Over/under on pages?

It’s just the sports section. The political/religious fanatics don’t come in here. I say 1

Let’s think of something. The most legendary coach of all gamecock time, and his banner, had this chaplain on his staff and all was good. He was tgere for the 5 peat, and the two 10 win seasons. Why muschamp want to fire him? Crazy

A lot of kids have strong Christian beliefs. Why fire the Chaplain?

to comfort the team that went 3-9, and for the hall of famous coach that ran away like a gun-shy dog, he needed prayers......

Probably a stat that isn’t available - but it would be interesting to know the number of relevant college teams (not that sc is relevant) that have active chaplains, and the number of teams who have them, and then a new coach fire an existing chaplain

I wonder why teams offer prayer before games? Sometime the whole stadium bows their heads in prayer. Just crazy

Couldn’t pray a six peat… That’s why he was fired…

Muschamp is all business, and hard nosed… He couldn’t give a rats ass about a Chaplain… Next the Clemson liberals will be asking for transgender restrooms at Death Valley… Geez… Soft…

“It’s a non story fueled by misinformed fans”…That about sums up what really is going on. There will be “spiritual leaders” involved with the team. And like others mentioned, were the chaplains “prayers” even working?
