Looking to get something pretty simple that I can easily conceal. Just for peace of mind when I’m taking the boat out of the water by myself late-night/early morning after gigging/fishing, something that I can carry with me in the woods, etc. Like I said…doesnt have to be fancy, ideally <300$. If anyone knows of something available let me know…will consider trade for my Loomis fly rod/reel (listed for 450$). Thanks guys!

I have a CZ99 with three magazines in the box with paperwork in new condition that I am trying to sell. It’s a little more than you want to spend at $450.00 but a very nice gun. It’s a full size auto though.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

For around $400-$450 I would look for a small 38 revolver. It will do the job up close which is what you would most likely encounter that late at night. look for a S&W 642 or a Ruger LCR. Both weigh less then a lb empty.
Just FYI, it doesn’t have to be concealed if going to/from hunting or fishing. That being said, one of the small frame stainless .357’s would be perfect. I have an older Smith and Wesson 636 that I carry with me fishing. You can load it with .38’s also if you just want to target practice and it wont wear out your wrists. The stainless will hold up better around the salt. I gave 350.00 for it a year ago from a friend who was selling it.
You’ll get a thousand recommendations and most all of them will hold merit. Here’s mine:smiley: get something that can withstand the elements…Stainless steel is a good choice.
Get something that you don’t mind “tossing” around, it will likely be going from truck to boat a lot and when it’s in the boat it’s gonna get battered around in the glove box or tacklebox.
A revolver for your application is hard to beat because of less moving parts and ease of maintenance.
It doesn’t have to be big, in fact the smaller the better. You’re not looking for something to kill large animals, we’re simply talking self-defense…less recoil is a good thing when the pressure is on. You only want to neutralize the threat, not blow off body parts.
Now with all that, here is what I carry…A small browning 25auto. I normally keep this one simply because it will fit behind my wallet and you don’t know it’s there. It’s auto, but very small and effective at close range. My other weapon that rides in the boat at times is a CharterArms 22WMR pathfinder. It’s 6 shot revolver, Stainless Steel and I keep it loaded with Hornady Critical Defense Cartridges. The WMR cartridges carry a lot of energy for very little recoil. Makes a nice little PPG. I think I paid around $350 brand new with a nice carry holster.
new to the site but I have a brand new at Christmas fired 8 shots since then Taurus PT145Pro…we bought two during the Sandy Hook scare…two clips and case I would trade straight up…704 502 7833…call or text me if you are interested…jeff

I may be wrong, but i’m pretty sure that’s a clause in the DNR Rules and Regs. Not State Law.
You have to be very discreet when you carry any weapon in public.
I highly recommend you watch this video. These guys know what they are talking about. there is a commercial halfway thru so dont miss the second half.
5 Great Handguns for under $350
It is a state law! They tell you that also in CWP permit classes.

Look for a taurus model 85 in stainless steel. Around 300 bucks, 38 special +p. Rubber grips and accurate enough for what its made for. Its my woods water carry gun. Won’t rust and won’t break the bank if it gets gone somehow.

Guys, thanks so much for the advice…decided on the Taurus and got one from a fellow cf member. @23, none of the fishing I do requires a handgun…but, I came back in from solo gigging about 3am at my private landing on 41… While packing out, a guy came up to me asking for money. I didn’t see him till he was a step from me…i told him to leave me alone while he had the chance…thankfully after a healthy discussion he left without incident…point is…that could’ve taken much different direction…he had a bottle in hand and I had nothing…anyway…hopefully I’ll never need it,but at least I have it. Thanks again for all the help guys.

I could have used one Saturday to dispose of some 200-250lb sharks that kept eating my jigs.
