Yellowfin.....

Anyone know anything about these boats? So far I have not heard anything bad about them.

Sweet boats!!!

Best there is in my opinion, great looking boats too

Sea Pro 210cc
Yamaha 200 4 Stroke
Dodge 1500 4x4 HEMI

Very nice boats, would like to have one, one day.

Zoo Crew
23ft Sailfish

one of the best you can buy!

KNOTHEAD

One of the finest boats ever made. Just make sure if you buy a used one that it doesn’t have a fiberglass fuel tank. Ethanol will destroy some fiberglass tanks.

I got wood just thinking about a 32’ Yellowfin!

23’ Contender F225
20’ pro-line bay Yamaha F150

Let me know if you have any questions. I am building a 36’ with them now.

How do you decide what engines to run? Brand wise

New and don’t know what to do

Obviously depends on the boat you are interested in. Yellowfin is a semi-custom builder. So they have specifications but will customize in brands, location of items, etc.

So they have a price list with the HP options for that model. Then its up to you the customer to do your research and select whats best for you. They seem to push Verado’s but are just as happy to install Yamahas.

They basically told me stick with the major players (Yamaha and Mercury), both make very good products, but service varies from place to place. Pick your best service outlet.

So you would have to basically decide based on who has the best service in the charleston area? What if you service it yourself?

New and don’t know what to do

Regular maintenance is one thing. But have you looked under the hood of these new motors, its all wires and computers. At some point you are going to require a certified tech with experience to fix an issue. But they will install anything you want.

Yellowfin just sea trialed the first 36 with the new 300 Yamahas a week or two ago. It was 2 knots slower than a Verado boat. I went with the triple 300 Verado’s even though I have Yamahas now and love them.

They mostly use the 300 Verado and the 350 Yamaha. So if you don’t care about service it comes down to a price, power, and speed decision. They told me to stay away from the 350 Verado’s because of all the special things they require (like fuel).

In the end both motors are great.

Did you run the V8 300 or the really new Yamaha v6 300 that just came out last month that will outrun a Verado? Our experience with the Venture boats is the Yamaha out performs the Verado bar none and there are more yamaha dealers to work on them especially in Charleston.

From reds to marlin you got it.

It was the new 300 V6’s.

It seems to me that the mercs will continue to outrun the yams because of merc’s superior propeller options and racing influence. Wylie’s background is in as much racing as it is fishing, so he is going to recommend what performs best out of the gate on his boats.

Yamaha is what you will want around here because of service centers being much more numerous than Merc and most mechanics wanting to work on yamaha and deal with yamaha service rather than anyone else IMO.

Mercs are going to be perceived as faster.

Yams are going to be perceived as more reliable.

All of this contributes to a higher resale with the Yams and probably more of a wow factor from people riding on the boat with mercs.

For an example of what props up the perception you will face here when trying to sell the boat or repower with or from mercury, take a look at this '04 36 and what it’s value has seemingly dropped to. Note the engine hours, and consider why the difference.

Not sure if this is the newer hull layout with weight distributed differently to run better with 4 strokes (change in the splashwell design can determine maybe?) or if the fuel tanks have been changed out or built originally as aluminum or what. The boat looks like it has excellent options and is in great shape, but look at the motors, and you realize why it isn’t being listed for $140 or $150K perhaps.

All that being said, I personally would run merc’s on such a boat if I could afford one- ESPECIALLY if I was purchasing brand new and would be getting the latest and greatest Verados.

I’d probably prefer Yamaha, but if the V6 300 yams really are not that impressive, then you are back again looking at their heavy v8’s or the vanila F250’s versus superior Mercury performance options.

A merc boat is always going to outrun a yamaha boat it seems. Yamaha needs to fill more of these gaps where they could put in more horsepower with less weight like its competitors have done. i.e. Suzuki

As far as Mercs being faster then Yamaha I believe a huge reason is because most people are running yamaha props which suck. Mercury props are a whole lot faster but do not hit anything with a merc prop because you will be buying a new one. Anytime we sell a high performance boat we put a merc prop on it for speed. For instance The Majek 22 xtreme with a Yamaha 225 SHO with a yamaha prop gets 64 but with a merc prop it will break 70-71. I bet if you took the Yellowfin boat and did an apples to apples boat with yamaha V6 300 with a Merc prop then you will outrun the Verado hands down. 2 knots is a cheap fix.

Phin I know they do not have the 4 stroke 175 but do you not think Yamaha will replace the 150 and 175 HPDI motors with a SHO 150 and 175? They are already replacing all HPDI motors and the only motor left is the 300HPDI and the 150 and 175.

From reds to marlin you got it.

hey dixie, have you run an SHO yet? just wondering if they’re living up to the marketing hype. and how do they price out compared to an HPDI?

We fish the Texas Redfish cup out of a Majek 22 xtreme with a Yamaha 225 SHO. There is NO motor that has the hole shot let the new SHO and they will easily out perform the HPDI motors. Price wise you are only looking at about a grand more. They need to be run with a non vented prop and if you are running a bay boat the Mercury Bravo 1 pro xs prop is the way to go. Optis are having trouble keeping up with the SHOs and the SHO is a four stroke.

thanx, dixie. i think yammi has a winner with this technology. they’ve been using it in the motoGP bikes, but race machines get freshened on a regular basis. i hope that it is up to the task of the marine environment - may see blue on one of my boats eventually.

So you are saying a Yamaha SHO needs a Mercury prop to be faster than
Mercury Verado stock. Maybe Fishman 77 will chime in since he is building one with them.
