YFT Intell

Got some “undercover” info from some Longline Boats on the OBX. YFTs on the East Side of the Stream again this year. Seems good numbers are being caught. Hopefully they will show this Spring to the West or Im gonna be making a MutiDay overnight to the East for my TUNER FIX.

What is more dangerous… Fishing on the “East Side” of the stream in a 60’ boat or fishing the “ledge” in a 21’ boat?

DISCUSS for the next 10 pages please…

I’ll give you the answer at the end.

What day of the week is this? and what is the sea state?

It would be nice to see them show up again in numbers. Its been a slow few years.

A recent article in the march/april 2010 issue of CCA’s Tide magazine (page 48) by Russ Nelson painted a bleak but accurate picture of what is going on with yellowfin. It appears recruitment overfishing off the west coast of Africa is to blame for declines in abundance on the east coast of North America. Main culprits are Taiwanese, Spainish and French purse seiners deploying FADS and harvesting all sizes including juveniles. Could be a long time if ever we see yellowfin here again in significant numbers. Thanks again ICCAT.

So why is the bite still awesome in the OBX???

NC’s catch has always been about 10-15 times higher than ours and also the highest on the Atlantic Coast. While they are still catching fish in NC their catch during the last 2 years has dropped dramatically from around 100-300,000 landed annually through most of the decade to around 25,000 landed in each of the last 2 years. Their fishing grounds have always been more productive than ours for most species. An analogy that might shed some light on what is potentially going on is if you recall when red drum numbers were at their historic low in our state you could still catch red drum but they were found primarily in what would be classified as their ideal habitat. As their numbers increased their distribution became less spotty and they could be found filling all the available habitat. That seems to be what is going on with the tuna although on a global scale. Our tuna regulations are the most restrictive in the Atlantic Basin but it does us little good since the fish are being hammered year around in both their spawning and nursery areas by industrial fishing operations. Wish i could post the Tide article but have not been able to find it on line.

they can still gilnet and longline up there and still have more fish than us.

Jesus saved souls with the truth… He caught fish with a gilnet

Whats the over under for recreational catches of YFT this year??

I say 10.

Man I need to learn how to cut and paste because when this was debated a month ago I found two articles stateing that YFT’s are classified as basically being fished at a near sustainable level. I guess they don’t take the illegal activity into account. Hard to belive the YFT’s we catch here are spawned off of Africa. As for the 61’ footer to the other side of the stream, why wouldn’t you?? We take ours to the Bahammas with one stop. If the weather is good an fuel isn’t and issue I would

Who said that you shouldn't?

long way to go for a yellow fin but could win you some prize money in a tournament.

How far is the east side of the stream from the jetties?

Stop or I’ll shoot!

I guess noone did…ha ha. I will read better next time.

don’t waste your time or fuel. the ocean moves kinda and as I have mentioned many times before there is no guarantee that what was there today will be there tomorrow. Now if you went today and were going again tomorrow that might help, but otherwise the eastern side of the stream is kinda like the eastern side of africa.

an mutiday might be fun nonetheless

So did anyone say how far it is to the other side? How wide is the stream? I wouldn’t go out that far if I’m not on a cruise ship but that’s me.
