They do bring in business for the community, but most of their expenses are a tax write off as a business expense!

Not as much as the “corp group” themselves are doing for the economy…know that. Charter guides are a business and they’re getting a major input for free…I think they should pay more. A lot more. What if Disney World set up shop on Yellowstone without paying rent? Would that be cool?

The clients of those guides stay in hotels, eat in local restaurants, hit the bars, buy gas, beer and who knows what from local establishments. For every $500 charter, a thousand more is spent. Not counting what is spent by the guides on boats, motors, service, tackle, safety gear, bait, ice…
Most guides are more focused on protecting the resources than the average fisherman, unless they are very short sighted. They have to save some to make a living tomorrow.

No doubt, but it still seems that these charter guys are avoiding paying for a HUGE input to their business (after all, $150 is nothing).

Yeah, New boat every couple years, new rods and reels, gas, oil, ect, ect, aren’t paying much at all to run a business…

Disney World needs a lot of new stuff, too, but they still gotta pay for that land.

Very true, but tax write off or not, they are still drawing and putting a lot of money into the local economy. Everybody who is trapping mud minnows, or dragging for bait shrimp, or selling tackle, or making ice and selling beer, fixing motors, selling boats, rebuilding reels, they all get a cut. Not to mention the titty bars
And if anybody thinks that being a fishing guide is easy, or highly profitable, they have never done it.

Larry, I personally couldn’t do it! I get pissed off at myself, for getting a birds nest on a cast! I would be pissed off all the time with a novice! No one, would have a good time
Is mother nature a huge input to a guides busiiness? Should ski resort have to “pay” for the free snowfall they get each year?

Try 6 novices at a time. Every day. It teaches you patience if nothing else.

I think you’re twisting things a bit. That ski resort has paid for the land, either by buying or leasing it. And I assure you it costs them more than $150/yr. But you and I don’t need to argue, you’re already on record as supporting $2000/yr for charter captains to use our resources. Would you be willing to testify before a SC legislature sub-committee to that effect?

Warbler, are you in a position to get Fritz before the sub committee:question: If not, why ask:question:

Ski resorts aren’t exactly depleting natural resources though. Technically most/all of them pay to make snow every year.

I want to catch them all
How do they make snow? I am assuming they use water. IF they have a well then that is a natural resource and those ****ers should pay.

Fritz, what got up your but over a ski resort? I can fish anytime, but I sure do love the fact that we have ski resorts. I love some down hill action! I try to stay away from deep powder, my knees and back are getting a little worn.
and yes they do use water if Mother Nature doesn’t supply the snow.
Hope you haven’t blown your gasket yet! Charleston is getting more crowded as we type. It’s probably going to happen more and more. I’ve fished dynamite hole and the jetties, but not anymore so I will never cut you off. It’s always a reward to find a new and secluded productive fishing hole.

I always wondered, why pick up guests in Shem creek and fish a stones throw from IOP Marina? For dramatic affect?

Ok, I didn’t catch that… Hope you make enough this year in fishing to drop the other job! Or the other way around! And then enough to enjoy a nice week of snow skiing.
I have to take my hat off to anyone that is actually making a good living at fishing. The say if you enjoy your job you never have to work a day in your life.
