Last July/August I caught a few ~16" tarpon in a cast net in a tidal pond in Charleston. Has anyone else seen this before? Has anyone caught young tarpon here?

You sure it wasn’t a ladyfish? They can kind of look similar
Caught some years ago in a lagoon down in Hilton Head
Certainly possible.

NEGATIVE. urban legend. there are no poons in those lagoons.
“Poon Lagoon” I like it!

I knew somebody would say it might be a ladyfish. Though I’ve caught many small lady fish in the same spot these were certainly not ladyfish.
Skinner, did you catch them on a rod or net?

Well I’d have to say I’ve never caught a tarpon in a cast net. But today I actually did catch three redfish and one trout over the course of A few throws of a cast net.

Why is this even a discussion…? Im pretty sure Don Hammonds proved they were spawning around HHI 20 years ago…Hell I have seen them crashing off of Murrells Inlet a bunch, and we know they are all over from HHI to points north. They kill them in the Pamplico Sound. Im sure some of those fish are local.
its what we do on here. have pointless discussion and fling unsubtantiated inuendo all over the board

I’m fully aware we have adult tarpon but by no means does that tell me we are a spawning area for them. Despite fishing for about 20 years and my dad fishing all his life also I’ve never seen or heard of baby tarpon here until I netted one myself. I figured with all the fishing I’ve done if they were here I would have caught one by now. The pond I caught them in just recently became tidal and the other side of it is where I’ve caught thousands of fish and never sited a tarpon. Of the places you mentioned I’ve only been to MI once for spring break. This is an inshore discussion forum, just trying to learn a little about species outside my wheelhouse.

My college roommate at USC, who is now head of fisheries for the state of West Virginia, trapped/caught tarpon larvae around HHI while on a project as a student there. it may not be a big population, but it happens.
I know of quite a few poon lagoons in Hilton head, I go catch them rom time to time but like to keep the pressure off.

Somehow, I don’t think you’re talking about fishing…
