Youth fishing to jetties @ Murrells Inlet question

Hey folks, Cross Trail Outfitters York, SC will be coming to the jetties in a few weeks for our annual surf fishing trip. Last year was excellent but we’ve got a few questions as we prepare this year.

  1. How are the noseeems? Any suggestions on how to deal with them?
  2. What lbs line are most of you using for smaller fish?
  3. Any particular artificial bait we should use?
  4. Any other suggestions you have we are all ears. We will be staying at the state park and hiking down. We’ve got heavy duty surf carts and will use a jon boat to carry water and ice coolers.
  5. We’ve got shark rods/reels but any suggestions on leaders and bait? Doubt we will land any but will plan big circle hooks for easy release.

Coach,
Fished the south jetty for many years, but not for a couple now. Historically, good numbers of flounder, sheepshead, blues, spanish and sharks there. If I’m fishing there i would go with fresh mullet or finger mullet. Small pieces will get you lots of action. Very early in the morning or late afternoon into sunset is always good for blues and spanish. Bottom rigs work good and have some sting silvers to sling for schools.
Sheepshead are always around the rocks at the outer reaches and will swim over the rocks on breaking waves to snag barnicles.
We have had some monstrous sharks on and landed out there. Tigers, browns, duskies etc… Either side of the jetty is good, but the deeper channel on the inside would produce more , generally. If you only want 3 ft. sharpnose, you could get away with a 50 lb mono leader and a circle hook. Looking for bigger sharks with larger baits, I would go with at least 10’ of some so

50-130 lb lines, that is.
