I understand money plays a major role but I can think of alot of more practical ways to derive income. Im just saying for some its about winning and that doesnt always equate to cash

Any fish that you catch has a chance of dying. What makes a blue marlin so special that it needs to be avoided? And why does it matter that it is declining in numbers?
The only reason that it matters is that people like to fish for them. If no one fished for them then it would not make any difference how many there were.
Sportfisherman want to make sure that they are protected from commercial fisheries because that has such a large impact on the overall population of fish. Sportfishers are limited to total annual marlin landings of somewhere around 250 fish - I do not recall the exact number but it is a pretty small number in the overall picture. So while lots of folks get upset to see one weighed it does not make much difference.
Now, there is no doubt money plays a role. How much money do you think that the Pirate’s Cove Tournament brings to the Wanchese area every year? How about Big Rock in Morehead or the Governor’s Cup series in SC? How many folks are employed in marinas and boatyards and boat builders? So yes, it is about money. Money pumped into local economies.

i am by no means a cf.com allstar, so i can’t help you there. you, however, very well could be… reds to marlin and all… check with 23Sailfish - I think he is the captain.
I am mad at the culture that should have changed by now. I have been involved with sportfishing since before my father was born and it makes no sense to reward folks for killing marlin any longer. I dont care how the fish died. What I do know is that it had a much greater chance of survival if money were not on the line for bringing it to the dock. Years ago when not many people fished offshore it was a novelty to see big fish on the dock and unfortunately the dock gawkers still like it today. Im just saying that it would make more sense to award more money for released fish then hung fish. And I’m also saying eurofag short runnin short dude is a fool! Take it for what it is. I know the fish probably would have survived if there was a monetary penalty for catching fish over 600lbs. I have never and will never kill a billfish intentionally. Meatfish are a totally different story

Carla Dee (Or anyone else who can answer). I have never caught a big marlin. How much of the effort put into catching a fish this large is put in by the boat and how much is put by the person holding the pole? Do you rotate people on the pole? If the pole holder is more involved than the boat then I would have to assume people rotate on the pole because many of these folks in these pictures don’t look like they could hold up nothing more than a 12oz. at a time. If the boat is doing most of the work then what is the point in catching these fish?
Since I am an amateur I don’t know these answers and I also don’t know what’s a cf.com allstar? Is it someone who bounces back to this website in between their porn download so they can see if their existence has been acknowledged?
Also Carla Dee, Ferrari overrated but big women aren’t.
greg,
meatfish are a different story because you eat them. I know some folks eat marlin, but not many. I have never seen marlin on the menu and I come from a fresh seafood restaurant family.

What does what you’ve seen on a menu have to do with anything?
Have you ever seen Spadefish, Hogfish, Cusk Eel, Bluefin tuna, or Blackfin tuna on a menu?
Take a look at this:
