1986 Mako 231 Rebuild

this is how it sits now. any ideas how I can brace the hull while keeping it on the trailer?

Cool project man, keep at it!

Is this the same hull type as Phin’s project? Looks the same? Man, I envy your enthusiasm taking on a project of this magnitude. I’m always very impressed!

more like it’s little brother. Pretty sure Phin’s was a late 70’s/early 80’s 25 ft model (25, 251, 254? not sure), which has a deeper V in addition to being a little bigger overall . Mine is actually a little over 22 ft. But the stock layout is almost identical between the two, and since he did the eurotransom and I am adding a bracket the interior space will be very similar. I am trading some wave-crushing ability for a little shallower draft, but should still be more than capable of getting offshore on any day I want to be out there anyway.

his rebuild was a major inspiration for sure! if I can make mine half as nice I will be very happy

Well didn’t get any actual work done, but spent a few hours under the boat measuring and staring and think I have a plan to support hull.

I will add some 4x4 cross members to trailer, and then add blocks/wedges to support 2x10 & 2x8 boards that will run the length of “flat” portion of hull. The deeper “V” portion forward will be supported with 4x4 blocks and 1x4 boards (to better conform to curves).

Made some templates of hull bottom angle. Seems that the deadrise on these hulls varies more or less continuously from forward to aft? Snapshot of data I got, interesting. Average deadrise over the planing portion is several degrees more than the 19 deg at transom.

Should be able to get somewhere next weekend

Coming up on the weekend…get your itch on.

finally got some time to work on the boat. between work, weather, mothers day, parties, etc seems like it’s been forever. Nothing too exciting but finally got the hull up off the trailer and leveled so I can build the cradle.

couldnt find a place to rent boat stands and didn’t want to buy at $100 each so made some from 4x4s and 2x4s. Don’t know that I would use them to work under the boat but just needed to temporarily elevate it off trailer. very sturdy, would have made things easier to have real stands (with adjustable height) but I made it work. Probably only about $10 in materials in each one.

lowered trailer tongue, placed rear stands, then jacked back up. Slid a 2x6 under the keel and used a scissor jack to elevate the whole boat off the trailer bunks and slide another “stand” under the keel.

At this point, things got a little hairy because I misjudged the fwd/aft pivot point and boat started to tip forward and lift off the rear blocks! managed to keep it under control and re-position the keel support further fowards, with the extra supports it is super stable now.

had to wrestle the trailer into perfect alignment with the hull. now that the boat is “floating” over the trailer should be pretty easy to build the cradle onto trailer underneath. Since I cant lower the boat onto the trailer, I plan to jack the trailer up to the boat, allow it to take the weight, remove boat stands, then lower the whole thing back down. What could go wrong, right?

Goat head Holmes. Your neighbors gots to love you. You best takr them some fish when you get done.

Buy some boat jacks…the money you saved doing this yourself is worth the investment…I’d lent you mine if you’d axed.

thought about it, I don’t mind investing in tools I’ll use again but I move every few years so probably couldn’t drag them around with me anyway.

and not sure where you are, but probably a bit of a drive from up here in VA… appreciate the offer though!

update from the weekend. Mostly worked on getting the trailer built up to cradle the hull, finally finished that boondoggle. probably way overthinking this but its done now and hull is definitely well supported so I can move to/from storage when required regardless of stringer progress.

Don’t have any of the whole mess, but here are some shots of all the parts at various stages. The “stands” are just temporary and were just used to support and level the boat while I built the trailer up underneath it. I may put them back in place when I’m working in the boat just for added security though.

poked around inside the boat too, mostly cleaning up remaining foam and a little exploratory cutting on the stringers. Going to be a real pain to remove them and get back to a flat-ish surface to rebuild on.

Once again, I’m impressed with your work. The hull looks completely supported, especially the support to the outward flex on the gunwales.

Whatever you do will be better than it was. I can’t wait to see your stringer design. Box or bulkhead?

Nice work man, keep at it!

Nice work on the stands, look like you took a page out of my and mdaddys book!

that is definitely not gonna work.
you have white pine used on the exterior, you have untreated pine in contact with anti-fouling paint, and treated pine.
seriously, it looks great. from what I see, it looks overbuilt with no chance for movement.

yep, and a random mix of galvanized/coated/zinc/plain fasteners, and carpet, and even some wood glue in there somewhere. :stuck_out_tongue: probably going to disintegrate and/or burst into flames any minute!

just need it to last long enough to get stringers out and back in. Then most of that crap will go away.

On a serious note, I went ahead and replaced the actual bunks while I was at it, even though the boat isn’t actually sitting on them right now. I used treated 4x6’s, which I know some people do not recommend but I have used treated wood for bunks before with no issues, held down with stainless screws. Pretty sure they will last at least as long as the rest of this ratty old trailer, which is good enough for now. I’ll probably invest in a new trailer when the boat is done anyway.

hope to get some serious work done this weekend!

prepped for surgery…

I took the last pic a little off center so you can really see how one of the stringers is placed a little differently. Guess it was close enough!

time to cut!

Angler 204 FX

stringers are out! only a single layer of roving holding them down, almost trivial to cut with grinder and cut-off wheel. Cut them into manageable sections with a sawzall and they came right out. went back with grinder and cut as much of the remaining lip off as I could.

now the grinding begins…

Let’s see the stringer plan while your sitting around doing nothing.

oh I’m itchy for sure… nothing like a nice humid 90 deg day inside a plastic tent to open up those pores and let the fiberglass in!

yeah got to start making some real final design plans now, will get something up soon
