Anyone know what the law is on anchoring off the beach? Some old beach patrol with an attitude made me and family leave and I think he was making up laws.
Not an expert, but I think your right! If your boat was in the water and not on dry land you should have been OK! There is a law that says you can be on dry land if you stay below the tide line and you aren’t on private property! Put a uniform on some people and they become demigods
you are pretty much open to anchor off any beach… the only exception would be if your family was off the boat trespassing on private property. (above the high tide mark). i am sure there are other exceptions, but that’s all that comes to mind.
where were you at?
I don’t know anything about the laws on Edisto, but yall might be wrong if it’s anything like GA. All the public beaches have a safety zone extending 1,000 feet from the high tide line. No power boats are permitted in that zone May 1- Sept 30. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if SC had similar.

Here is what is on the Edisto ordinances site
6. What is the policy regarding Boats on Edisto Beach?
Town of Edisto Code of Ordinances (Beach Regulations) limits the launching of boats from beaches. No boat or watercraft of any kind can be launched or recovered over the grassy portion of the dunes through use of trailer or cart of any kind. Beach accesses can be used for launching or recovery of sailboats, kayaks, or non motorized craft, but any trailer or cart of any kind used for transport must be removed and not used to transport the craft over the dunes to the water. No motorized boats are permitted on the sandy beach at any time. Sailboats and kayaks can be stored temporarily overnight on the sandy beach, but not the dunes.
South Carolina Code Section 50-21-870 prohibits vessels from being operated in excess of idle speed within 50 feet of a person, dock, pier or anchored vessel and may not be operated in excess of idle speed within 100 yards of Atlantic coast.
There were 4 or 5 boats anchored in the same spot on 4th of July. Water Patrol went by several times and did not stop…I think as long as you are not on the sand you are OK.

That is what we do and there has not been an issue yet. I don’t really like having the bow on the beach anyway, it was starting to wear off my gelcoat.
I just use a monster 28lb anchor and sometimes a tail anchor that I know will hold and wade/swim to the beach. It is also a good platform for the kids to jump from and have fun.

Since when does Edisto need a beach patrol anyway! My brothers mother in law was berated because her grand kids dug too big of hole in the beach while building a freaking sandcastle! They were harassed all week by the guy down toward the sound…all for stupid stuff like that. So much so that she was inclined to write a letter to the town, the beach patrol, and the realtor. And I’m talking about families that have been coming to edisto since before there was houses there. WTF!

Must have been in front of the whindam property. Those people are real Richard heads! They think they can push beachgoers around, but just tell them to call dnr if they think there’s a problem.

They are pretty anal about big holes. Sea turtles get stuck in them. Same thing goes if you have bright lights at the beach at night. If you ever noticed the street lights have darth vader helmets on them because of that.
I personally like the old guy on the Polaris. I have talked to him several times and he will give you the locations of “beach scenery” if you ask.

I agree big holes can be a problem especially when grown men take actual shovels on the beach. But this was a handful of 2 and 3 year olds. How much damage can a toddler actually do? Common sense should have prevailed and let the kids keep playing…

I agree, they could have dealt with it a little better. My kids dug a hole so deep they could stand in it and only their heads would stick out (about 4 feet) Patrol guy just asked we fill it in when done because of the turtles. Before that I did not know that beach holes were that big of an issue, but it makes sense.
People with authority and common sense seems to be an endangered species anymore.

My family’s house is around the 1100 block and as much as we are down there I have never had any problem from the beach patrol, and as far as I know no one else has either. I have seen them scold folks for climbing on the jetties but thats about it. Maybe that one guy is just full of himself! I have also anchored on the ocean side to run up to the house to grab a few things from time to time and never heard a word from anyone.

I’ve only had positive interactions with Beach Patrol. I’ve seen them ask folks to fill in their holes when done, but never have I heard them scold anyone.

They would be better served having him patrol the ever-growing number of idiots buzzing around and holding up traffic in golf carts on public streets. Worst law passed in regards to highways i’ve seen in the last 25 years was to allow them to register and use the roadways.
They are not supposed to run golf carts down 174. I have seen people do it but its not very often. Jungle rd might as well be a cart path though.
I know nothing reasonable can be done about it but I hate that the 1 lane is unusable because of people parking. You get 1 guy pelican gazing in the left lane going 15mph and cannot pass on the right. Its honestly just an inconvenience because no one should be edisto that is in a hurry.
Things I take for granted every day a lot of people onle see a few times in their lifetime. No sense in getting all worked up about 5 mins wasted out of my day.

You’re probably going to out live me as I DO get stressed at some pretty somall stuff at times. I only get down from the upstate a few precious times a year so every moment is vital. As a cop in the upstate for two and a half decades I’ve investigated more than my share of wrecks, many of them serious and even fatal. I see what cars and trucks do to other cars and trucks, even at slower speeds. Golf carts, in my opinion, have zero business mixing with traffic on any type of road. Half the time these are driven by teenagers and we can sort of guess how they rate in the grand scheme of driving. I am very pro Nikki Haley, but she was out of her mind when she signed this legislation.
I’ll probably ruffle some feathers… but. I honestly think that only licensed drivers should be allowed on our roads. Keep the bicyclers, carters, four wheelers, etc. off of the roads. Some of these, especially bicyclers, are on the roads before daylight, without even reflectors on the bikes. Seems like there should be better laws keeping them off of the roads atleast until after sunrise and not after sunset. They should also be ticketed when not obeying stop signs, etc.
