A friend of mine had his boat t top power coated white – now after 3 yrs the coating is comming off and it looks like crap !!
It’s all about preparation and the install. If you leave any edges for corrosion to enter, it will be bad very soon. The trick is to not give it anywhere to get between the part and the powder. For me, I’m drilling holes in the tubes to allow powder to make it INSIDE to seal off those edges.
Also, if it cracks when you install the part, you’re inviting corrosion between the part and the powder. Even just torquing down screws can do this. Also I will use some nylon washers between part and screws to help with this.
It’s not ideal, but I can’t afford to pay for or to wait for it being sent down to Sarasota this time.
Yes you are correct !! If you look at your first picture the boat next to yours is like his, the white powder coat in the joints are corroding he now wishes he would have gone with stainless !!

Stainless?? Way heavy, especially for a t-top. Aluminum all the way. Ask leadenwahboy how much his stainless poling platform weighed.(not to mention the 50 lb. plus, fiberglass top)

Yeah, my original platform supports were stainless, and incredibly heavy. Add the 40 pound top and it was way too much.
I hope to lose about 40 pounds going to this new platform. The whole thing including the starboard top weighs less than the supports for the other top…
Got the Balzout electronics mount in yesterday. It is a SERIOUS piece…incredible design and construction, should last forever! I was hell-bent on flush mounting the Simrad but it’s not gonna work, and I was hell-bent on NOT using a RAM mount or the factory gimball mount. This should handle whatever I throw at it!
TOPSIDE IS DONE! Non-skid went on yesterday! Tape came off today! That means the fun stuff gets underway next week! RIGGING!
Texture is AwlGrip in same color as the gloss, Desert Sand. Used 1/2 and 1/2 coarse and fine GripTex additive to create this “almost aggressive” texture. Should be perfect. Note, pictures don’t really do the colors justice. I’ll snap some outside this week.
The Grip Tex does a great job. I usually mix the 2 textures also.

The two mixed together seem to make a great texture…not crazy aggressive but aggressive enough to be effective. The fine by itself is not enough in my opinion.
Man, that was quite an undertaking but it looks great so far. Looking forward to seeing the final product. Hmm, I thought the jon boat I restored was a job. You have built virtually a new boat.

Basically I have built a new boat with an old hull and a used motor, yes!
The only other parts that were reused was the flip-up bow light, and all of the hinges for the hatches as I couldn’t find replacements. Aside from that, every part is new!
