Bentz-Craft restoration - 2 years in - FOR SALE!!

Any update on this? Im itching to see it

Look at where Jesus went to pick people. He didn’t go to the colleges; he got guys off the fishing docks.

Waiting on powder coater…dragging his feet. Hope to pick it all up this Friday.

Got the powder coated parts back yesterday! The black is deep and stunning. Can’t wait to start to put it all together!

You need to let everyone know when you put this boat in the water for the first time. At this point you will probably have a flotilla of CF members to watch the unveiling.

I’ve already got my cooler packed with provisions. Ready for the launch.

I can’t wait either, guys. I just need to get all my other BS out of the way, get all the parts actually physically at my house, and get started.

Next week I hope to have everything in my garage and ready to go. I know I’ve said that before, but I think I mean it this time!

I’ll get the firework display ready.

This should be the show boat at the CF oyster roast

Well of course, every little piece is presenting its own challenge.

This week’s challenge is with the mounting of the Simrad install. I didn’t adjust angle of the console to flush mount the unit before paint, so I was stuck with a mount of some sort. I bought the insanely expensive BALZOUT mount to use, but with it mounted, and the bracket, and the unit, it is entirely too high off the console…

So back to square one…mounting unit directly on the console. That presented a challenge as well, the connector out of the unit is almost 1" long, then another inch of cable, then the iron ferrite noise isolator piece. This means that where the cable needs to enter a wire clam or a gland seal, the noise isolator is right in the way. That means I’ll need almost 5" of cable hanging out of the console between the seal and the unit…would look terrible.

And of course, since this build is all about aeshetics (lol) there has to be another way…well I remembered JumpNCobia and his 3D printing prowess…

SO here’s where we stand. A picture of what I envisioned, and a picture of what he’s working on…can’t wait to get it in. Will eventually glass the console to match this design, maybe even using this as a framework.

Well, rigging has begun finally.

Jackplate is hung, transom support bracket installed, motor mounted to plate. Bilge pump installed and plumbed, livewell/baitwell pump installed and plumbed, raw water washdown installed and plumbed. Through hull brass fitting installed and flared, engine harness and control cables installed and run to console, and fuel system installed including fill and vent and supply including Racor separator. Poling platform is just sitting there, had to make sure had plenty of room for jackplate operation, and it goes full up and full trim/tilt without any contact!

Today the platform will get installed, and the console assembly begins tomorrow I hope…ready for this thing to be wet!

Check out the squeeze out around the transom plate fastener(s). That’s a product called Tef-Gel, supposedly will keep the stainless fastener from corroding from dissimilar metal interactions with the powder coat and aluminum…every fastener on the boat is getting this stuff if any chance of corrosion exists.

And a shot of the Atlas Micro Jacker…white 4200 squeeze-out will be cut off when cured. Went with this product on recommendation from Atlas themselves.

are you going to do anything to the engine? I did some bolt on things from Hydrotec to a couple of Yamahas, that made them run and sound like Mercurys …

Austin Services in Givhans did the PC work. The business was sold to a friend of the previous owner. New guy is doing big things over there. Very easy to work with and prices were phenomenal compared to others. My only complaint is that they removed the piece of wire that Happy Bob installed through the platform that was to be used as a wire chase…took some creativity and a shop vac and some 80# braid to get a new chase run through.

The transom support was done for me by Vance MFG. They specifically say they will NOT do one-off pieces, but somehow I connected with the owner, who was intrigued by the story of Bentz-Craft. He made me one with the promise that I get some more of them sold for him. I have held up my end of the deal, and am incredibly impressed with the work. I think it really completes the splash well back there, along with the black cleats and stuff.

At this point, no. Once this boat gets in the water and shaken down, and the slush fund built back up, the idea has crossed my mind for sure. But with the 90 and a Michigan Ballistic prop, these boats will run upwards of 60 MPH. Not sure much more is needed!
