Best repellent for Edisto bugs

Stayed at Edisto last May. Headed back down this May. Only thing that hampered last year’s vacation of a lifetime was the no see’ums and some heavy biting yellow flies. What do you locals use to keep the bugs at bay? We tried every spray repellent on the market. All any of it did was wet them down at best. Now we did have some luck with the green incense-looking sticks but it’s kinda hard to stay on the downwind side of those. Any advice is appreciated.

Idk but I know what your talking about! Once had a gnat bite me on the white of my eye. $&@$&!!!

NO NATZ! Seriously the best and natural bugspray invented

14’ Skiff-“Redfish Reaper”

They don’t bother me, but my buddy uses dryer sheets and they seems to work!

Thanks for the input. I’ll try the no natz. I rate my hatred of dryer sheets right up their with the noseeums. I have a friend that lives near the Edisto and he drinks the sulfur water from those old flowing wells. Tried that stuff ONCE…puke.

Do they sell nonatz around Edisto Island?

The nonatz is the best I’ve used for gnats. But the Edisto gnats can still penetrate :). But maybe save your day of fishing. Last year I was down there and they were so bad I finally put down my rod, fired up the boat and tore off on a full plane in a big circle. Came back and they were on me in 30 sec. Luckily a breeze came up eventually. Argh!

Yeah the wind works wonders. Maybe I’ll invest in a really big fan like they use in them music videos. LOL, We rode our bikes out at the Ernest F Hollings refuge. I swear the yellow flies were so vicious I about had a panic attack trying to get back to the truck. Figured out later that they only liked the shade…not so vicious in the sun…so guess where homeboy stayed the rest of the day.

Lol. I hear ya about the panic attack. That was what preceded my taking off on a plane. Anyone who has “been there” knows what we are talking about!

Having only lived in the low country for a little over a year, I can honestly say that the thing I HATE the most is the noseeums. For some reason, these little basterds (actually it’s only the females that bite, at least that’s what I read) drive me crazy! They’ve driven us inside on occasion and treat children and adults with the same reckless abandon.
I’ve used the No-Natz and can’t say definitively yet how well I think it works. Some people swear by it. Sometimes the bugs are so bad the only solution would be a suit of armor. I’ll use it again though just to make sure. You can buy it online if you can’t find it at sporting goods store.
I also wear long pants, long sleeves and a buff around my ears/face if they’re really bad.
If someone could invent a spray as effective for noseeums as they’ve done for say, mosquitos, man…they would make a fortune and I’d be an investor!

Deep woods off. The strong stuff in the small pump bottle that has so much deet it in your lips go numb if you touch them and you’ll melt your steering wheel.

Lots of folks use Avon Skin so Soft for the no see ums. It is basically mineral oil with mineral oil with a sickly fragrance. Plain mineral oil rubbed liberally on exposed skin works just as well.
The yellow flies are attracted to anything blue, so you can make a trap for them out of a blue beach ball coated with a sticky substance like Tanglefoot or any sticky substance.

Try the Skin so Soft Bugguard in the green can. No smelly oily mess like the original Skin SO soft. I swear by it!

That explains it. They were biting me until I turned blue so they could be attracted to me. LOL…
Wonder if my wife will figure out why I bought her all blue shirts for vacation this year?:imp:

Ordered a can today! Thanks!

There is this stuff called cedarcide. Stonoman turned me on to it when the John’s Island gnats (Edisto gnats little cousin) were tearing through my offwoods deet when we were fishing.

You will smell like your grandmas blanket chest but it works well. It’s great for dogs too, those little flying a-holes bite dogs as well.

The Evada-Bug has always worked for me and a very pleasant odor as well.
It was developed by some chemists that live on Edisto Island. Also, sold at the marina and the local stores; however I might pick up some of these other suggestions try those products as well, just to have in the boat.
