When I ask if anyone else has caught any,I am not attacking you.I am asking a seriuos question. It seems(from posts)that I would do better to just forget about “the great striper run” on he coast and stick to murray.I am a lot closer (to lake murray) anyway

Actually, I mentioned him by name in my email (he is a local here) so you must not know him. He fishes out of a deep v aluminum boat…doesn’t look too terribly old, though. But he is a rockfish killa.

you got a 'yak?

Fightin cock,
Thats my buddy in the aluminum boat. He is the rockfish king, but please don’t mention his name on here. I have pic’s of his fish and I will post some with his permission.

N.S.? He is the undisputed local king of rockfisherman.

But there are no rockfish in the Combahee to speak of…so the rest of you needn’t waste your time.

apparently there are no rockfish there,as we only have 1 person claiming to have caught any

Yes that’s him! He is the king. He lives next to my sister and I never gave the “ACE” a second glance until I went with him. So I know Willy is telling the truth but we all know there ain’t no stripers in there. There ain’t no redfish, trout, flounder, largemouth, and bream either so don’t bother!

Well, here are a few tidbits of information gleaned from a magazine article by Bob Campbell. The article is entitled “South Carolina’s River-Run Stripers”.
In the late 70s a striper weighing around 60 lbs was caught in a lowcountry river by a subsistence fisherman who brought it into a little country store in Hollywood where a passerby bought it thereby eliminating any official recognition of it’s size for recording purposes.

In 1983 J.M.Dowling (no relation) of Beaufort caught a striper in the Combahee. It weighed 44lbs 8 oz.

The state saltwater striped bass record was broken in 1993 when Billy Wayne Chambers of Canadys landed a 46lb 13oz fish in the lower Combahee River after a 20 minute fight. It was caught on a yellow bucktail.

According to Don Hammond, a DNR biologist, “We know we’ve got some nice stripers in our coastal rivers, some big ones. But on average, fisherman can expect to catch stripers in the 4 to 10 lb range. Twenty-pounders are occasionaly picked up.”

Southern riverine stripers move up and down river seasonally and occasionally move into neighboring rivers if conditions are right. They shy away from high salinity waters, and the rare occurrences of these fish in coastal waters corresponds with episodes of heavy rain. During the spring spawning run they move far upstream where river rocks mark the fall line where the Coastal Plain meets the Piedmont. Traditionally the larger fish are caught at this time and on into the summer in the “thermal refuges” in upriver areas where springs may feed into a stream and where a dense forest canopy provides shade to assist with cooling of the water.

During winter, the stripers are downriver, near the estuaries in brackish water. Coastal fishing for striped bass is a winter activity since these fish, particularly the larger ones, are in the lower reaches of the rivers during the winter months. “Where they are is directly related to water temperature,” said Hammond. "And that may be more important than salinity. If we have mild winters, they st

Yes, this past Sunday - 4 Rockfish, trolling stretch Magnum’s, Goose Creek - Red & Whites and Blue and Whites - each of the 4 Rocks were around 6-9 lbs. Maybe 1 hour of fishing…No photos, no witnesses (except my dog) and no fish brought home. Willy knows where I speak of this feat.

I was making my 1st attempt to post photos…did a no/no I guess. If you click that link it’ll show a thumbnail of my rig. Gonna make another stab in a few.

Been wanting to get into the Combahee but too many things keep getting in the way. Anyway…this is my rig. If you see me stop by and say hello.

man-up or shut-up

My flyrod seems only to be effective when I can see the schooling fish. Typically Oct/Nov in the lower lake. South (River side) of the trestle - from right at it to the second turn - 3 nice deep holes that seem to hold the fish - you can find them on the depth finder. Also at the new dike they built at the freshwater impoundment a few miles down - too far for the Troutkiller. I will see you somewhere soon…

No,I don’t have the $ for the trip.I do want to check that place out though.I think we may have better luck with stripes up here though.Good luck to ya’ll
