hey i forgot to ask you murray…did you catch a 20+ riverene or a lake murray striper?if thats your first, congrats.you might could do a search of my threads if interested.i love trout fishin also,as well as spottails and flounder, and i think i had some pretty good ones on here somewhere.
about the “current” thing someone above asked me.if your boat fishin, yeah let it go down current, but with enough weight to sink it good.also, dont get too caught up with fancy azz rigs for the mullet.use 20lb with a 30 or 35 lb leader and good sized circle hook.a big chunk of mullet will take it down and if their eatin they will find it.the bonus is you will catch big spottails also which is a plus in my book.i also use a trick sometimes the father taught me where you use a small weight and purposely keep it up in the current, but down below the surface.easy way to do this is tie the weight on the end of the 20lb line.then attach the 35lb on the weight and you use about 20 inches or so of the 35lb.this is a weird lookin rig til you start catchin big fish and your friend aint.remember, stripers will be found in all levels of the water column.my father got this trick from al mcreynolds who holds the current saltwater world record.caught in atlantic city during a noreaster.78 lbs and some change.anyway…try that when you hit the cooper again.willy
murray, february might be better.i assume with the name you are from the columbia area?maybe the friend, you and i could hit the combahee next month.the little runabout we use will hold 3 easy.i will email you with some perspective days we might could go.also i go down there and bank fish from time to time by the steel bridge on 17.i play acoustic music, work law enforcement(12 hour shifts, and have to fit my schedule with his for the boat, but this is a definate possibility.he already got a 37 lber and has hooked bigger in his secret spots.he is a great striper fisherman, and we could put you on a biggun.people that know me on here will tell you i get more enjoyment out of my friends catchin bigguns.taught a guy on here earlier this year how to catch flounder with a grub.(16 year old i think)he still emails me to this day to see how im doin and what im fishin for this week.by the way…havent fished for the freshwater cousins lately…hint:sunglasses: willy ps theres some bigguns in murray…
got2go,congrats on the first one.you have caught a fish and now youre hooked.youll be a striper fisherman for the rest of your life.the riverenes are truefully one of the great mysteries of sc saltwater fish.while you will fish for other fish through the year,i guarantee you will always have december, january, and february striper fishin in the back of your mind all year and will always look forward to it.if youre finding them in the cooper, youre well on your way.good luck the rest of the season. willy
ps someone emailed me askin what kind of rig i use. 8 ft ugly stik with a old school mitchell 302,20lb and 30 or 35 lb ande line.love sufix, but havent tried it on the stripers yet.i will try to post some pics of the lures we use also if i can.i have some wild lookin lures.one is a grub that looks like it has christmas tinsel tied on to swirl around it in the water.i dont know what a striper thinks it is but it works real well.good luck in the cooper.
sorry,we must have been typing at the same time.a simple spot to find on the combahee that has served me well as well as friends on here is take 17 south to the combahee.put in at the landing there and paddle towards the freshwater(in that direction)when you get tired of paddlin, float back with the out goin tide on the south side of the river and you will have a good chance of finding them.try some lures and mullet, either fingers or big mullet.let it drift with you as you enjoy the scenery.if youre real easy like you can fish a electric chicken and pick up a spottail or 2 while you wait to find them.when you find them, you got to stay near them if they are moving.if they are suspended you will know because you will pick up one, then nothin else.go back easy like and try again over the same area.repeat until you find them and so on.keep a leash on your rod though,or you might lose it.try the rig i described above.you could also bring down some big herring.they will nail that guaranteed. willy
I have caught more than one.And If you are for real,I don’t see why you would not help out a 'yak-striper-fisherman.I am sure you will read this post before end of month. How about justifying a little of your fanfare by helping with some specific info?I am searching for info for my 'yak crew…
I guess we are typing at the same time. I would guess the 17 bridge is not where you caught 14/hr… come on with the real stuff… we’re just a couple of 'yakers …we won’t ruin your spot!!
How about you try to be thankful someone is lending you a hand and just go try it out… half the fun is figuring it out on your own once you have the basics down. You won’t get far with most people on this site by bugging the tar out of them after they have already helped you quite a bit. I’ve asked my fair share of questions, but come on…
Willy, thanks for sharing all the great info - I may not be able to put it to use like I had planned this year, it seems I will be here until mid-February. Not sure how long they will be down in the Cooper, but I’l be ready to chase 'em around when I get back.
The less people know about how sausages and laws are made, the better they’ll sleep at night.
i posted numerous threads on this site that mentions plenty of names of fellow members that were with me when i have caught fish.do you not understand how to use the search engine on this site?and no,if i dont take you myself im not giving you all of my good spots on this site.ive done this in the past as you would see if you would use the search engine.the other thing you obviously dont understand is i couldnt give you precise gps type sites anyway, only some general landmarks and areas to try.riverene stripers do not stay in “spots” all the time.like any other fish they school and move sometimes and suspend in areas at others.in the cooper, try at the mouth of goose creek this month as this the area they have always been in in january, although the weather has been different this year, and this is sometimes unpredictable.later in february, you can try as far down as shipyard creek.how much more info do you need?good luck,i think you will need it.you might try reading some on the riverene stripers.there are some good articals on the web.
jerms, sorry i missed getting out there with you before you left to go back.if you get back before march 15,i can still put you on some spots in the cooper where they may be before they head back to the freshwater.i also have some spots up towards the east branch where they hide in the spring and summer.we will have to take the “shatty” out when you get back.yes im still bummin rides on boats.seems like along time ago i met you at the trestle huh?see you when you return.
you know…almost all of my friends have left this site because of garbage like this crap in this thread.when it gets to the point that you cant post without this kind of baloney, its time to leave.im glad that atleast some people got something positive out of my threads.and you who have fished with me know me and how to reach me.
you also know my integrity, and thats all that matters.however, this isnt fun anymore.when it gets to the point that i almost forgot to congratulate a new friend on his first riverene striper because of defending myself to someone who doesnt know me,this is where i draw the line.i will leave my email on for friends to contact me-and with that said-im gone.
got2go,giacommin,fish4everything,stingray,dernflatlander,coolbreeze,redsripe,jerms…where ya’ll at !!!

Murray, I am new to SC so I have not fished with Willy yet. If he ever extended an invitation I would jump at the chance to fish with a fellow striper fisherman. Hopefully I will be able to fish with him in the near future.

Hey Willy,
I was thinking about fishing the “ACE” thursday with Dragon-Mouse. Maybe you could tag along with us. I bought a new keep alive bait tank and am going to try to bring some herring and large shiners with me.
Murrayfisherman,
[quote…the 17 bridge…come on…what the… I still haven’t heard from ANYONE !!! who has fished with willy…that is what smells “fishy” to me.quote]
If you read Willy’s posts he tells you exactly where to go to catch them. No-one is going to give up their spots. If you really want to know where they are take a trip down there and watch and learn and then post your results on here. Then privately email some of these guys and ask them for assistance, but don’t ask them to blab about their spots on here. You won’t accomplish anything.

Ck your email, Willy. I believe I saw your buddy this afternoon on the water.
Btw, I read earlier where someone was talking about the place on Bennett’s Pt Rd where you can fish from the bank. It’s called “Fee Farm Creek” and it has historically been a good spot to catch fish when the water is running out. Too bad rockfish are about as rare as black ducks these days, though.
