What type of boat can you use there? Is it flat bottom shallow boat only type water? I guess what I am asking is could I run my 19’ fiberglass Galaxy there or would that be dangerous? I would like to give these Riverene stripers a try. Also would the stripers in the Saluda be considered Riverene or is that a term used for the Salt water stripers?
All,
Any of you guys ever fish the spring spawn at Roanoke River NC? We have been fishing it (when we can) for the last few years. When the water is right it really is something special. I wish we could get our Striper fishery in that kind of shape. I have fished the Ace Basis for Stripers all of my life and I must say Willy - I have never had the success that you are having. Perhaps I did not have the magic bait - specifically if you don’t mind what lures are you using. If you don’t want to say I understand - I am not sure I would tell.
Another note according to the DNR website they have a series of meetings lined up to address the Striper situation in Santee Cooper. I hope that they come up with something that works. The population in this system is terrible and that is a shame because that is where it all started for Landlocks
i wouldnt call 38 fish in 2.5 months all that successful, especially when my friend has caught twice that many.mind now, there not all whoppers either by any long stretch.we have also been fishing for these fish since childhood, and know from past experiences about where to look for them based on water temp, and especially in the combahee whether it is december, january,or february, and even into march when they start back the way they came.i use finger mullet, cut mullet, deep divers,10 inch black plastic eels,i have had some success with herring.i have caught them while fishing for spottails on grubs when i had another rod with mullet on it.my personal favorite is a lure that i found on ebay…it is a grub looking lure that has christmas tinsel looking stuff that floats all around the grub.it has awesome action in the water, and what the striper thinks it is is beyond me,but it worked in february and march last year in both the cooper and the combahee.i have some old school striper lures that i have collected from virtually every state on the east coast that i have fished for them.i would tell someone starting out to use finger mullet or cut mullet.reason being-they almost cant resist a big fat mullet steak, and if they are suspended in the river near something and you happen by,youre gonna get em.stick to one river, learn where they congregate, keep a log book, and i mean air/water temp-location where caught-where were they in the water column.top-middle-bottom.was the tide incoming or outgoing?what was the actual water depth, even if they werent on bottom?all these things will help you catch more, and they will still drive you crazy when you catch them in a spot one day-back next day same exact conditions…no where to be found.or you get lucky and find them in completely different type location-thats riverene striper fishing.if youre not patient,or you have to catch alot of fish, try trout, there a whole lot easier.this year i hope to get a old school runabout like my friend has and set it up like his for stripers, then i cou
if i can ever get these pics scanned i have from yearsd of this fishing,i can show you stripers that will make you have night mares i caught up north.and some good ones here too.yes i fished most rivers on the mid atlantic coast-my personal favorite is the rappahannock.best striper fishing back in the day.im really a surffisherman by heart though.in fact,i now can hit long beach island new jersey every year in the summer now, because my cousin has a house there.good luck willy

Steelytom, The water is 30’ deep in the middle and about the only thing you have to watch for is crabtrap floats and floating debris, especially boards the workers throw off the steel bridge. They are expanding hy 17 and building a new bridge next to the steel bridge.
Rockbottom,
My buddy fishes there every weekend and he consistently catches five or more fish when they are running good. I don’t doubt willy’s story one bit. I have a hole there on the fresh-water side I call the rod-breaking hole because I had a fish break my rod there.

i imagine there are a few rods in there kloud.i had one yanked out of the rodholder in the same spot you are talking about.5 or 6 in that spot is a good day no doubt, but not improbable at all when they are there.maybe we can meet up there one day.will have to be in february though. willy

Hey Willy, You must be the guy I’ve seen in the cooper river at night
a bunch over the years. I mainly fish the lake for strippers but make it to the cooper every so often.
The lake did not do so well this year. Santee cooper had a meeting about strippers on thursday but I did not get attend. I hope they will do something positive to rebuild the stocks. I have had many a hook straitened on the lake but the largest one landed was #20 in 2004. would love to continue that trend!

Hey murrayfisherman, you gonna post any fishing experiences on this site or just make smart remarks about everyone else’s experiences? Grab a rod and go catch something so you’ll have something worthwhile to post on here!

why do you keep bringing my name up in your posts?are you mad because people post positive towards me and negative towards you?you have around 40 posts on here, and about 3 of them are positive.you say you give your spots out,but ive seen one spot you gave out in murray.i have told people about shipyard creek,526 bridge, mouth of goose creek,17s steel bridge as well as i told you to paddle down into the fresh on outgoing and drift back on the south side.reason?i knew you would drift right over some good spots.but, you werent satisfied with any of that.you say everybody lies about their fishing posts.why, because “you” lie about them?i dont need to prove anything to you or anybody else on here for that matter.why post at all on here if you dont trust anything anybody says?plus…youre making so many friends on here?

please xplain how i kick ass again?the funny thing about this is you think those posts are so “kick ass”.pleaze…what else is funny is another guy on here comes right out and says he and a friend catch fish in the same spot that i have caught fish,so its not surprising to him.its not surprising to him because he has actually been there fishing and caught fish himself.thank god you didnt see some of my other posts from trout fishing/spottails/flounder.but,you wont bring those up.or look them up because there are pics and others mentioned from this site that were there to prove the catches.people like you drain all the positive out of a site like this.mostly because you cant post anything, because you have nothing to post.and dont give me the “thicker skin” crap.this goes beyond that because you think im a liar or a braggart or both, neither of which is true.not all,but most of these guys have read alot of my posts that post in my threads.they tend to give me the benefit of the doubt because they either know me or know people i have fished with,or just plain saw pics before along with the many names on here i fish with from time to time who would gladly back up my stories.once again i say read the old threads…heck, ive done a whole lot better with the trout this year.or how about the spottail that won the surffishing tourney?
or the many flounder/trout posts with pics…no you wont do that because then you would have to shut the eff up…

Sad to say, but I think this topic needs to be put to rest:frowning_face:. We all know who to e-mail or talk to and how to share the information. Maybe someone’s next post can be, “Stripers are in the salt, can’t wait 'til they are back in the fresh”. Back on the water Thursday afternoon, Friday, and Saturday. If I fish for 'em, I’ll post. Tightlines to all and remember to safe!
heck no,i aint ending this thread because of a jackazz.i put this on here for a few friends that i know are interested in the riverene stripers, and i will from time to time post catches or friends catches,or for that matter whatever i want to post on this thread.its a shame that he is trying to ruin this thread, but the positive in that some that read this went out and had some success blows his baloney out of the water.everybody sees who posts the positives on here, the negatives will fall to the wayside.

Even though this thread turned negative, it is still full of good information. Most people do not give out there exact fishing locations. But several are given here. It has me itching to go try for some Riverenes. Just have to put a new impellor on my water pump.
