cobia setup

Hey guys, just wondering if you guys would give a freshwater striper fisherman a few cobia tips. My wife is from beaufort and we plan on making the trip down in the next few week. I’ve heard the other boats will give me an idea of where to start. Im guessing fan casting live baits out the back but Im not sure as to what size weight , line size, ect. Also what depth should i be looking for to anchor up . i have fished the broad in the past but this will be the first time on my boat and also my first go at a cobia. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

Try that link… There’s a lot of good info already on this site.

I like to sight fish for them. I normally use 20# class spinning gear and throw a green cuda tube at them. The hooks on the store bought tubes need to be sharpened or replaced with better hooks before use.

Catch u a big un!

You really didn’t get much info I’m afraid. You are asking for what many consider to be guarded state secrets:smiley: Let me help.

I use a mix of conventional and spinning tackle. It all has to be stout. A short fish will be 20 pounds and a big one possibly approaching 100. The lightest line I fish with is 20 pound mono, the heaviest 60 pound braid. You need a variety of weights, depending on the current speed and depth. Egg sinkers from 2 ounces to 12 ounces. I stagger the baits from the surface to the bottom with 4 or 5 baits out. Float the top baits from a balloon.

Leaders are usually 60 or 80 pound, about 6’ long attached to the line with a stout swivel. Hooks are 5/0 - 10/0 circle hooks. Match the hook to the bait size.

Anchor so that you can position your baits directly in a rip. This usually puts you on top of a bar in about 20-30 feet for anchoring.

Chum heavily. Have at least 2 good gaffs and a big net.

I’m just waiting on the wind to quit blowing:smiley:

Where is the best bait and tackle shop in the beaufort area? And also what do you guys use for chum. us upstate striper fisherman are spoiled being able to drive to a bait shop and being able to fill our bait wells with herring and gizzard shad .

Beaufort Boat and Dock Supply. 1734 Ribaut Rd. Port Royal. Great tackle shop. They will have everything you need.

Beaufort Boat & Dock Supply, 1734 Ribaut Rd Port Royal has all you need…frozen chum, finger mullet, squid & eels, plus tackle, boat & trailer supplies. Great folks to do business with. A new place is Buck, Bass 'n Beyond in the Town Center Shopping Center behind K-Mart & Outback. I do not know what all they carry, but should…my son’s GF works there!

Coming down from the Upstate…bring your Ron Vest (or other) tank full of live blueback herring…cobia love 'em like stripers do. Plus frozen blueback chum is as good as you can get other than chumming live greenies (live threadfin herring). You can gold hook live greenies in the Broad while fishing (or catch them with Sabiki rigs). It’s good to chum the surface, plus drop a chum cage or bag to the bottom on your anchor rope or on its own with plenty of weight.

Try a live herring or two on a float near the surface as well as down, plus hang one (or better yet, a live eel) shallow from near the front of the boat so it’s right under your boat. Cobia love to get under the boat and lots of time…wham…they hit that shaded bait.

Good luck.

Thanks i don’t go anywhere without my Ron vest.

Great advice given, Grayco has a nice supply of tackle, frozen bait and chum and they are open on Sunday.

I was wondering if the current would be strong enough to use planer boards. i was thinking i could use those instead of the balloons as someone mentioned. we slow troll them up here for stripers at .5 to. 1.1 mph.

You will be wrapping those planers around a lot of anchor ropes. Your best bet is to anchor up and fish.

Is that really the only option right there at the bridge ?

Yep, if you troll through the bridge with everyone anchored up, you may want to look out for sinkers flying at you…

Not wanting to troll im asking after im anchored up would the current be strong enough to plane the boards out I’ve got a little more common sense than that

adjusting the amount of weight would get similar results I think
