Does anyone have anything interesting to share from Google Earth? Please avoid pointing out specific fishing holes. Things already shared on Danluginbill’s “High Tide fish” thread include 1/28/11 observations at: 17.260-45.510 at 250 ft. altitude, 23.000-30.000 @ 2,500 ft. alt., 19.460-45.600 @ 2,000 ft., and 21.135-48.950 @ 250 ft. If anyone has found cool things on GE in the Beaufort area or maybe elsewhere, please share them here.

Hey Rose Ellyn…are those Daws numbers 32 degrees north and 80 degrees west?
Not sure I got my format correct.
Rose Ellyn, if those numbers are 3219.280’ - 8036.000’, that puts me in the marsh 3/10 mile east of Station Creek landing.

Talked to a friend at OCRM, the round objects near Horse Island were 8’ wire mesh clam enclosures. They were placed in the mud in the 80’s, it was too labor intensive and abandoned. DNR concluded to leave them, as oysters started to colonize on them. Mystery solved, might be a great high tide ‘reef’ to fish.
That’s a crazy formation at Dawes. I wonder if any archaeologists ever speculated on its purpose?
Thanks Rose Ellyn. I had heard this was an old “clam farm”, but assumed the circles were made from old truck tires. Thanks for the details.
How about this one: 3218.060’ N. Lat. x 8041.400’ W. Long. Anyone have the “history” on that one?

There are about 6 different colleges doing archaeological digs on Daws. I doubt they missed it. They’ve trenched up half the island. Wish they would just leave it alone.

I’ve looked at those before, I “think” those are some old breakwaters going back to sailing ship days. Pure speculation on my part:smiley:

Again, another failed clam operation, staked bags, you can see where storms scattered some.
That’s very interesting. I thought that was an old fort foundation. Thanks Rose Ellyn. You are a good source for information about our coast. Do you know if any articles are available about these clam farming experiments? Just curious.
This one takes a little bit of imagination: 3218.490 x 8044.050. Zoom to 250 ft. altitude. Hold the shift key and tap the left arrow until things take on the correct orientation. If ya’ll get tired of these I’ll quit.

Could it be some relic from the phosphate mining days? I have found several “piles” of phosphate nodules in the Chechessee, not far from Daws.

Anybody know the story on this house near White Hall/Green Pond?

Toured it a couple weeks ago, all I can say is, it’s a museum. Originally called Myrtle Grove
I can’t tell you much about what’s on the hill, but there is some good fishing in Combahee. I fished it from Public Landing to High Banks and all throuh Salt Break/Wimbee/Schooner/Williman for about the last 10 years with an older buddy who fished CmB his entire life. He died this past summer. I learned tons about this river from him. All I know about the “hill” is that several large plantations still exist along the CmB.

Most of ya’ll are probably familiar with this “cool” plantation driveway: 3042.400’ N. Lat. x 8042.100’ W. Long. It is on the other side of Cuckolds Creek from Myrtle Grove.

What is the structure off of Turtle Island?
32?03’35.55" N 80?52’12.12" W
I don’t know, but I am guessing it is a spoil island from dredging operations. I don’t know why they would riprap it.
BTW, if any of you are having trouble converting latitude/longitude coordinates from one format to another, do this: TOOLS, OPTIONS, SHOW LAT/LONG. I use Degrees, Decimal Minutes because that is the same format as the TopSpot map. I think the default is Degrees, Minutes, Seconds. It is easy to swap between them if someone gives coordinates in a different format. You can also convert seconds into decimal minutes by dividing the seconds by 60.
