Edisto 40 and 60

Guys,

I’m think about heading to Edisto this weekend and was wonder if anyone knew what was going on around the 40 and 60. Are there any Sheep head, reef donkey, spades, etc being caught. Any updates would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the update; has anyone been bottom fishing on the wrecks lately? What are the seas looking like for the weekend?

Thick at the 40, 60, or both?

I’ve never caught spades. How big do you cut the pieces of jelly balls to catch 'em? Just curious.

the size of a quarter usually works

Good bit at the 40 just chum em up and the 60 is thick!

What size hooks do you usually use for spades? Chum them up with jelly balls?

Yes drop a jelly ball down to the structure for a minute or two and slowly bring it back up. If the spades are there they will follow it up. Once you see the spades following the ball up tie the jelly ball off and drop a small piece of jelly ball down on a number 1 or 2 hook and hold on.

Do the cudas ever grab the spades the way they grab BSBs as you bring them up?

The cudas were all over us at the 60 last August…taking the BSBs off about every time. We had to reel up as fast as possible just to get the BSBs out of the water fast enough.

PS: Yes, I am a rookie at the reefs, so I appreciate the thoughts from everyone.

The best hooks to use are #6 the lighter the tackle u use the more u will hook up with also the only line I can catch them on is flourocarbon and we use 12 lb test make sure ur drag is set properly and hold on!

small strong hooks and Flourocarbon are the trick, I’ve never had issues with the cuda though.

I’ve got to get out there and give that a shot. Sounds like fun. Do the spades pull hard? I would think so, with all that big, tall body of theirs.

Beaufortjay, Im sure I’ll be out there Saterday or Sunday and even Monday. Ill be in a 17’ Neptune with a T-Top (Look for the Penn T-shirt and visor. Edisto9871 spades pull like a train for their size. Make sure your drag is set appropreatly for the type of light line you will be using so you dont bust off on your first Spade.

They fight harder than anything else that size its awesome! Just anchor over a wreck or reef and let the spades come to u don’t spook them they are hard enough to catch already, but once u get the hang of it its a blast

My boat is down there already. I’d love to drive down on Saturday very, very early from Greenville and head out to the 40, too, to give those spades a shot. Sounds like tons of fun. Probably going to be stuck here, though.

Once I figure out when Ill be down Ill post, hell if we all get out there together we could get some good chumming going and really get a lot of spades to come up and hammer them.
