Epic weekend folly pier

I wouldn’t worry about. Remember, opinions are like a**holes, everybody’s got one.

Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.

At least he didn’t gaff it off the pier, like a few have done in the past. He caught the fish, and tried to release it in good shape. I call that good sportsmanship.

One, congrats! Tarpon from the beach is pretty epic.

Two, thank goodness it wasn’t a 12-foot tiger. Folly would have locked us out by the end of the week with that many onlookers.

…but seriously, congrats!

When we hook big shark we can’t beach it anymore unfortunately lol I did actually hook a pretty large bull just last week, would have been awesome if could have beached that. Got it to pier to get ID and few pics for all the tourists haha.

FishingDuo it was a great catch, sorry you got bashed for it. That’s a crappy turn on a memorable catch. Folks on the beach were probably mostly tourists and you know what, that’s exciting for them. Hell I’d be excited to see it if I were on the beach. Just wanted to chime in here. I think you have been treated unfairly.

Question for all the bashers. What are your thoughts on the dozens of boats set up at the bridge passes in the keys. When they wear out a tarpon its basically hammerhead food, even if they are lucky enough to get it in with out the back half bitten off.

I’m not one of the “bashers” you mention, but have a lot to say about the tarpon in Florida.

In my opinion, any “sportsman” that knows of the dangers you speak of, that still takes part in that fishery, is no sportsman in my book.

Forget the bashers. Sounds like an unbelievable weekend of fishing, topped off by landing a nice Poon! Don’t let anyone ruin this memory for you. I’m just mad at you out of jealousy!

What do you have to say about the tarpon in florida? There are assumed “dangers” in any fishery…ie here: reds, trout, seabass, snapper, kings, dolphin, tarpon, etc…add the keys’ species to the list and we’re adding a good many more…point is, no matter how diligent the angler is, there is always a chance that released fish do not survive. I’ve reeled in half of kings, I’ve released small trout that were instantly scooped up by ospreys, I’ve had bottom fish on but all of a sudden something ate it and broke me off…I’m not sure what fishery you’re fishing leadenwah, but there are always predators nearby that are looking for an easy snack (worn out, released fish, or fish being brought up). That being said, I’ve jumped in after my friends prematurely releasing redfish on my boat…I know the dangers, just as most on this site…still consider myself a sportsman…maybe I’m missing your point

I assumed he was referring to cases where the fish has an exceptionally high risk of mortality, not the usual risks like there always is (as you said)…

Agreed, understood…just don’t see a difference bw bottom fishing here over live bottom where sharks are chasing you up on most retrieves and poons in the passes in the keys…tarpon are more revered here perhaps, but they are incredibly plentiful down south…having caught/released lots of tarpon in florida, I’ve only seen the hammerheads on TV…I know they exist but it’s not like a release-to-the-sharks operation like it’s made out to be…I’ve caught them at the boca pass, the beaches, and the bridges…

Haters gonna hate!!! Epic Fishing!!!

Tennispro, I believe you, and am definitely inexperienced in the fl tarpon fishery. Just what I’ve seen on the shows. Which in hindsight is a stupid thing to form my opinion on. Thx for your perspective

Thanks for your views on it, they’re appreciated for sure.

But just as in every instance, there’s people on both sides of the discussion with strong views. Many people with as much knowledge on it as you preach just the opposite of what you say.

One day I’ll come down and see it for myself.
