I believe there’s enough evidence there for two hearty charges. No accident and you can clearly see the intent as both are looking directly at the target. Hope they get prosecuted.

What they did was wrong.
But if I were a young African American kid, and someone, especially a person who was in a position to be a mentor/positive influence or person of authority, called me the N word or treated me poorly because of my race, I would be pissed too.
I do not believe they did this without reason.
I do not think they just decided to hit a referee for no cause.
Something caused this.
The players claim the assistant coach told them that he has to pay for making bad calls.
The claims that the ref was making racial slur did not come out until days later when the story hit at national news and the players got suspended. Makes me wonder if the players were making that up to cover their butts.

Outside the Knockout game that was being played, doesn’t almost everything have a reason for being done, whether right or wrong? Heck, even the knockout has a reason, I guess. To see if one can knock some innocent person out with one blow!
I don’t follow what you are trying to say in this post. If the ref called them a name, it is ok to do what they did? If they had a good enough reason, it was ok to do what they did? I just don’t see any reason that would justify their actions.
There is No excuses for what they did. I don’t care how bad he was calling the game, I don’t care if he called them a name. I have been called plenty of nasty things (on this site too) but it is how you react that makes you who you are. These kids reacted with violence, that tells me all I need to know about them
