Hunt for sharks

Anyone been catching big sharks? Any beaches working better than others? I’ve been fishing out at edisto.

Caught some from the boat behind Hilton Head last weekend. Bonnets and Sharpies. Some break offs also. They should be everywhere right now.

And for sure if someone caught a BIG one we would have heard, I’m sure.

Just don’t advertise you’re sharkin ,lots of folks trying to stop
surf fishing as it is !!!

@gail wins, I don’t other than to other real fisherman. I’ve already heard and dealt with idiotic tourist who say that I’m gonna make them get eaten by a great white because I was out there with some shrimp and a light tackle setup for whiting haha and the funny part is that I was there before them and they had an entire beach open butt hey just wanted to come over to start crap!

Folly was sharky last week. Caught a 3 footer and lost a big one.

My buddy caught 3 sand tigers and a sharp-nosed while I had a couple short runs and took baits, he took me to school. He caught an 8 probably over 300 lbs and 2 7s one probably over 200 and the one probably under. I went back to the drawing board new line, rigs and hooks. The large 7 was got on a 4000 spinning reel and he had to chase it and fight it for about an hour and a mile on his kayak in the surf. We where at Edisto how have you been doing out there. Bonita is the top bait right now though we have had hits on other stuff, it just seems the rays are having trouble hooking up and horse mullets are either gone or left with the head on the hook.
I had a big black tip or spinner pop me off out there the time before last so I ordered some new braid because I bought a used reel with 80# mono that popped at 55 when I tested it, on the plus side I figured out the reel has about 35#s of drag not on a rod but straight pull from reel to weights. There is a few of us that link up and fish if you want to let me know. Not a lot of swimmers at Edisto especially by the inlets its not even allowed. My buddy had a crowed of about 50 people astonished and a few people even got in on the action of landing the sharks and photos. It was a good time and the 8ft was the first fish on my buddy’s new rod he went all in and bought a Shimano tiagra 80w with a 150-200lb all roller rod, 800yds of 200lb braid 200yds of 200lb mono top shot 25ft of 500lb mono and like 8ft of double wrapped 19 wire, if you see his reel you know he’s targeting a monster and most people see his bait and go whoa that’s big did you just catch that. His goal for the year is a 13fter and I think a 10plus is very doable but 13 will be lucky but he is geared to land it. He put the 8fter on the beach in less then 10 minutes with the tiagra, and was out of breath and super pumped because it was a goal achieved and his biggest fish ever. He’s got a stocked freezer, we both got gear coming in the mail today, so we are going this weekend for sure.

A 7ft shark on a 4000 spinning reel, thats incredible. Enjoyed your story 40 thanks. Your day is coming, go get um:smiley:

I haven’t caught anything out there this year yet but we have also been fishing further down up Ito the inlet. Just got a couple Bonita and I’m gonna guy them into big chunks and strips. Great story by the way!

We’ve caught 7 off the beach this year, 60"-94"

Whole Bonito works, he used a whole one about 5lbs or so to catch 2 of the big boys about 400-500yds out. The gear arrived and it just took 30 minutes and a wrist cramp to spool my 100w Okuma Titus with 150lb braid about 1200yds if I ever get spooled it will be a challenge to get that back.

Will an 8 footer take a strip of Bonita fillet?

Oh boys you are going to get all the tourist eaten. Not necessarily a bad thing though.

Well it will be me first I swim in my spread, fishy hands and all. About 2 hrs to spool 3 rods a 100w a 50w and a 12000 spinning reel, and tired arms after about 2600 yds later. He caught the one on a spinning reel on a strip, its just easier to steal.

40inch… I’m drooling… Lol. After my (nearly) 6 footer two weeks ago (which was, to date,my personal best), I’m dying to hook a bigger animal. If anyone is looking for toothy critters in the neighborhood of the morris island lighthouse tomorrow all day/evening or Sunday morning, I’ll be staring at it from a calm spot by some rocks… I have a recently acquired kayak that I’ll be paddling baits out with and will be taking my new Penn International V and Senator 9/0 setup for its maiden voyage. My wife and coworkers are worried about me doing this by myself. Lol. Point is, i would not shun some company! Hit me up if anyone will be out that direction.

Better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I don’t know much about kayaking, but I do know the current through that inlet can be strong at times. At least once I saw a guy get carried out. I was about to call the coast guard but he was able to recover and start heading back. I would just say be careful, and maybe let us know how it works out. It might sound a little contradictory after what I just said, but I’m actually thinking about getting a kayak myself lol.

@The Walleye Call, I like to consider myself to be a rather experienced kayak, I have been doing it for the past 8 years and I go 2-3 times a week. I would highly recommend that you not kayak in that general area, I understand that you want to get baits out but please select a different section of the beach. Lots of people have died out there just from kayaking alone. On another note, I went to edisto beach tonight and didn’t do so well, a few big rays and some small sandbar sharks. As I was arriving, some guys who were already there just released a 10’ sand tiger after tagging it! Man, if I could just hook one 3/4 of that size, I’d be happy haha.

@lucid and red, duly noted, thank you. I might be crazy but I’m not stupid. I saw a bunch of people kayaking and paddle boarding in that area last time I was out, which is what made up my mind to try it. But if that area is a danger zone, I’m not trying to take unnecessary chances. Where on folly is a good spot to yak baits out where its legal (not between 3rd W and 3rd E) and it gets deep quick? And where the tourist count is lower?

I personally don’t mess with folly because the beach is so shallow but You can use google to find good spots. The new google earth shows you the different water colors to show depth. Go off of that. I have had decent luck using that and kept safe.

That end of folly is sharky there is a huge amount of sandbars for the most part and to channels on the jetties side of the light house and one on follys side. Any where near the channels when the tide is moving produces nasty stuff like white water because of the sand bars. The sand bar tappers off and has a nice area to fish that is pretty much even with the col de sac on the beach front. There isn’t bad currents unless we are having current warnings which basically affect everywhere. The same thing goes for the county park end sand bars and white wash when the currents moving and the sand bar has a nice down slope that is about in front of the start of the parking lot. Small fish feed on bait caught in the wash, larger fish feed on them and sharks and dolphins feed on them. Sand tigers like large cut/dead bait, spinners and black tips prefer live, which makes since because tigers are big and slow and spinners and tips are fast and explosive. I also heard that hammers prefer live, though I have never caught one, but this makes sense because of all the sensors they have in the hammers. I’ve been told sharks have the second strongest predatory senses for hunting behind stingrays which use also use all 5 senses to hunt but have stronger senses. If you read up on each species of shark you can figure out how to target them because you will know which bait and area will produce the most likely outcome for your target. I fished for 3 hrs 8ish to 11ish on sullivans at station 19 which was not a good spot, its like 6ftt like 300yds out and had one rod get non stop hits mostly sharpnose, I caught 2, and had about a 4 or 5 footer on but it shook loose or let go in the surf. The rig on this rod was bought of amazon and called riptail it pretty much sucks since buying it I have had at least 30 missed hits and every thing is the same as other rigs but the hook sucks, I tried bending it to reshape it but it still sucks. Then my big bait rod finally got a big fish on and I played it for a second and let it run abou

I’ll be at folly more than likely tonight. Just casting some cut Bonita. I’m hoping I can at least get a 6-8 footer…
