BEEN THERE, DONE THAT… RARELY EVER WORKS OUT

They probably do have them broke to truck horn. Hunt with couple guys that have them trained that way. Garmin has come out with a gps tracking system that has google earth and a shock collar built in. I just tone mine now and holler their name and they quit and come to the truck. They don’t like that zap. Best thing they ever invented for dog hunting. More people are getting them they a little pricey $500 for the handheld and $300 per collar. Got a go pro camera they coming out with that you hook on collar and can watch on hand held. But think that’s more for the hog hunter and bird dogs.

SO to eliminate baiting, pitviper, you say no food plots? Ignorant.

SO the fact I spend thousands every year to provide food plots to ALL wildlife on my property is baiting? I raise 15 deer for every 1 we harvest. Should I not be allowed to grow a larger and healthier heard of deer, turkey, etc when all around me cutting of natural habitat (i.e. hardwoods replanted in pines and then sprayed to allow zero undergrowth)is going on to provide lumber for more urban sprawl to take away more native habitat. That’s a special kind of thinking right there sir!!!

Not saying eliminate foodplots, saying if we eliminate dog hunting, we should stop allowing people like you to sit over a food source… besides, if dog hunting is eliminated, there is no way in hell Still hunters will be able to keep up with the deer population that is steadily growing.

As for you calling me ignorant, I’m sure in this situation, that’s like the pot calling the kettle black…

A bad day fishing is much better than a good day at work.

That is very true and the auto insurance companies have a strong lobbying group with DNR. It’s never been legal to bait deer or hogs in GA until last year, but with the deer population out of control and the high amount of car/deer collisions, they made it legal here. Personally I think hunting with dogs is a lot more sport than hunting over a pile of corn.

Sort of like fishing, you just have to use the right techniques. Speaking good mannered southernese helps a lot

I have had great experiences with some and awful with others. Now I try to stay away from areas where dog hunting exists

really?? explain the sport aspect. Dogs run a deer by you and you shoot it?

" It is what it is".

Yeah, we need to change the laws, because there are no more deer left in the lowcountry!!!

Uhhhhhhh…

I’ve done both… My dad used to change my diapers on dog drives. He’s been running the same club for 40+ years, and was a member before that… I don’t think sitting in a tree is any more “sporting” than running a deer with a pack of dogs. I mean honestly guys, is it that much more sporting to pick off a deer on a power-line that’s anywhere from right under your stand out to 400 yards? Also, I don’t think any is more productive. If anything, still hunting is probably more productive. Heck, I bet more deer are actually missed in front of a dog with a shotgun than with a scoped rifle. You guys should be glad that dog hunters run their deer off of their property where they can take up refuge on your still hunting land.

There are always a few assholes that are going to break the rules and take advantage of everyone, but dog hunting is a tradition that I would be sad to see go. I think it’s easy to cast stones if you never dog hunted and you were introduced to hunting in a tree stand. Just like it’s easy for fly fishermen to hate guys who use live bait, and bow hunters to hate people who use a rifle. Everyone has their opinion on stuff and that’s just what they are, opinions. If a practice is sustainable, then as sportsman you should support it. You never know when someone is going to point the finger back at you. Just imagine all of the PETA assholes that want you to quit hunting. Do you really need to knock off each other?

There is no question that Cracker Larry is right on this. Shooting a deer with a rifle from a bench rest is 10 times easier than trying to squeeze off a shot as he get's across a road faster than you can blink your eye. WAYYYYYY more deer have been missed by a shotgun than with a rifle... Back in the good old days, many people walked around with their shirt tails cut off...

I would think bow hunting is the most challenging, then dogs, then rifle…

Skinneej is on the money. Try hitting a deer running full tilt through thick brush with a shotgun. You will miss a lot more than you hit. It makes sporting clays look easy. Shooting from a rest and stand over a corn pile is no more than target shooting. But I don’t complain about those who do it either. To each their own. I prefer slipping through the woods with my bow, or handgun myself. There is enough deer around to hunt them any way you like, but no need to try to stop another man’s sport who likes something different than you. Divided we fall.

That is exactly what they do. Deer are smart and learn the game fast. You will probably have more deer on a still hunting club just because of the dog hunters around you.

" It is what it is".</font id=“red”> right on, hunting deer with all methods are fun and sport.

I’ll go out on a limb and say you were not raised here or are very young and being raised by parents that are not from “around here”.

What would be neat is if we could be sitting side by side and I started telling you some stories about some dog drives! Wow. Way back in the day my father was a member on Big Survey Plantation. Never missed a deer and on one particular hunt my Dad killed 6 while everyone else missed. Those six were divided out among 18 hunters that day. Me, I’ve missed a bunch. It’s a hell of a sport to hit a deer in front of a dog. And it’s a hell of a sport to lure in a deer take a precision head shot using a brace, or go for old reliable and take a chest shot.

I just wish all dog hunters were respectful of other’s property. It’s one thing to get off property lines and quit another to release on someone else’s property line and/or stand the road on some one else’s property.

Searcher, if still had access to hunting with a good dog club that I could bring a guest, I’d love to be able to let you hunt one. I’t would be an eye opener, and I’d bet you would enjoy it and the adrenaline rush.

Fred, I’ve hunted on Big Survey before. They had some pretty great dog hunts. My dad’s club is just down the street (17A)…

Ha, just a thought, how lame would rabbit hunting and coon hunting be without dogs? I would never sit in a stand waiting for a raccoon to come out to a corn pile, but if I got invited to run some coon dogs at night, I would be pretty tempted to sneak out of the house!

I suspect you’d be a hungry pilgrim. More effective to use a trap, but not nearly as much fun as dogs. Rabbits are even harder to hit than deer. I like night time coon hunting with dogs, I sit by the fire BSing with the other oldsters and listen to the dogs run, while the younguns traipse through the swamps after them. That’s good hunting right there

WOW… How wrong c

All this over a modified billygoat. I remember the days before the steal hunter came around. Use to be you could hunt about anywhere. Hell we killed them to eat them. Now every tom dick and harry wants to be bill Jordan with there 1500 dollars zeiss scope and there 1000 dollar canon that can knock a tick off a cows ass at 500 yards. I use to dog drive and loved i. but the days of a good club are gone. Everyone is so greedy these days and thats the problem. Well that and whole lot of thin skins and ignorance. Just remember folks dogs can’t read.

" Just remember folks dogs can’t read ", can’t believe you made that statement. The owners of the dogs certainly can and should be held responsible.

Why shoot the dogs then? Shoot the owners.
