Went out again last night. Same spot, same technique, same results! I measured this one at 67 inches.

Excellent work man, I’m going to piggyback on your technique. I mainly just fish for reds and whatever else is out there and catch the occasional 3-4 ft sharpnose. It’s really gotten me hyped up to start going after blacktips and other large species. I use a Penn Spinfisher 4500 or 5500, can’t remember at the moment, then just a sliding carolina rig attached to a thin wire leader, 2/0 circle hook. What type of reel are you using?
Seeing lots of sharks already this year. Nice work on those.

Nice work. After seeing your post yesterday I went out and tried at Folly 8th Street. CAught a whiting, hooked him up on the shark rig (which probably isn’t very good) and tossed it out. Because I was using a 6ft boat rod, I didn’t get it 20 yards probably but Tide was coming in so I figured it would be fine. 2 hours later and nothing. Whiting was still partially alive when I reeled it in. Do you put the whiting on live or cut him to get more scent out? Am I wasting my time on Folly chasing sharks? I’ll make the drive to IOP if thats what it takes.

He said in the last post he has a sargus 6000. Youll want to use at least a 100lb single strand leader and like a 6/0 hook at smallest. make sure you have 6+ feet of 60lb or heavier mono otherwise getting them in from the surf can be tricky!

Yeah, I have a Penn Sargus 6000 on a 9ft Penn Spinfisher rod. It’s not enough to stop them in their tracks, but I never felt like I was going to get spooled. The rod feels like it has plenty of backbone left, too. I do think these are the weakest links in my current setup, though.
For both baits, I cut a few shallow “bleeder” cuts in their sides to put out some scent. Tuesday night I hooked the whiting through the back. It was alive when I put it out and, for all I know, still alive when it got hit. Last night I passed the hook through the gills of the whiting and hooked it in the belly. I got a short strike that killed it and took the tail off and rearranged my hook. I rehooked it the same way and threw it back out. Both sharks were hooked perfectly in the corner of the mouth.
I’ve never fished Folly and I tried Sullivans a few times last year without any luck. Funny story from last night; shortly after I got set up, a large family, fresh in town and excited to start their beach vacation, came down to the water and were splashing around about 50 yds from me. I caught a pup shark on my whiting rod and two of the teenage boys came over to see what I had. They were pretty excited to see it was a shark, albeit 12 inches of one. I said, “that’s nothing, I caught this here last night,” then showed them the picture from Tuesday. They immediately turned tail and ran back to the group yelling, “Get out of the water! Get out of the water!” I got a pretty good chuckle out of that!
Stan, my name is Andrew. You guys have this shark fishing down to a science and I’ve learned a lot from your posts alone, so thanks for that! If you’ve ever got an opening, I’d love to tag along with you guys sometime.
Thanks
Andrew
I warn you hanging out with us can be an expensive journey! Text me 631-553-6301 and we can try fishing together. I live in Mt Pleasant so IOP is convenient but we have had a lot of our success traveling around this season so far!

Iggy, Grab a rod and go, you know its not big enough when you loss all the line, at that point get a bigger reel and repeat. Nothing special required, just some heavy wire and mono for a leader. I think between us we use about 10 different style leaders, all with advantages and disadvantage, Actually i think i may have that many styles in my leader bag. You don’t need a Yak, get your feet wet with some tippers and see if you enjoy it. the good days are good, the bad days are cold, wet, and disappointing. For me they are worth the good ones. Also be warned every time you catch a fish you would normally eat your going to be thinking, “Cooler, or bait???”
If you have any questions ask, I know atleast 6 serious sharkers routinely post here.

Zeppelin, what do you mean by pass the hook through the gills and hook it in the belly?
Fishguy…I sent you a PM answering your above question…by mistake. I tried quoting your post, but hit the PM instead. Oh well…
Wife is dying for some fresh shark…I suggested we go fishing…she says great, but also asks that someone to keep her one too! HA!
Don’t worry…we’ll go kill our own.
The majority of us who fish for sharks are strictly catch and release besides maybe fast spawning inshore species like sharpnose and bonnet heads. Large specie populations have declined by 90% or more depending on the species. There is much better table fare than shark.

I have the gear, I guess I just need to find the right spots, just rays in Shem Creek and Breach Inlet ( which are actually a fun fight )

The above is where you are completely wrong.
As for C&R…do as you please, but never judge another for keeping what is legal.
Believe me, I will kill the first one I get a chance to. Some of the finest eating in the sea!
Bake and Shark…the best fish sandwich you will EVER put into your mouth. Nothing like it…anywhere.
Andrew Zimmern feels the same way…starting at 2:27 in the video below. (Richard’s is the BESS!!!)
I respect anyone’s wish for C&R…but don’t yuck on my yum. LoL
So when you guys are shark fishing you just cast off the bank? In Fl we had to drag it out 100-300 yards out with a kayak. I caught 4 sharpnose today on cut whiting and bluefish im going to post a report on it.
