Keeping it clean

The ole Scout hasn’t been this clean in a long time. It’s hard for me to keep a clean boat out of the water… Hopefully have a chance to bloody the deck tomorrow. Only stays clean in pictures!

Nice

looks good! used to clean and wax mine by hand… now i got smart and have a rotary and dual action machines. cuts it down from about a 12 hour job to 3.

I remember when you stole that boat. You shoulda been arrested!

Barracuda, I need you and your equipment for about 3 hours over here on Lady’s Island!

i am on ladys island… mabe we can work out a deal

Jim cut me some slack you know I paid for it! When people ask and I tell them what I paid for it they call me a liar… I showed one guy the bill of sale and his eyes bugged out. I told him that I may be many things but a liar ain’t one of em… I was just in the right place at the right time to find this deal. Sure am glad to otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to afford it. Barracuda what kind of machine are you running? I’ve been thinking about purchasing rotary buffer myself just haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

i got the harbor freight special. will see how it works out. just pads and backing plates were around 100 so i was not looking to spend 250 on a good rotary.

my dual action is a porter cable. it is amazing at finishing, but does not quite have the ability to clean up anything more than spiderwebbing on a car.

10 4 thanks I had thought about going the harbor freight route myself.

Yep, Madfire stole that boat…legally tho!

He took me back to the Eagles Nest one time. Not the offshore one lol where I fattened up some sheeps for someone else to catch. Tricky ****s to catch:smiley:.

Dang Glenn I had forgotten about that. Didn’t you catch a small black drum? We didn’t catch very many that day they get hammered in there pretty hard.

Picked up that rotary buffer and she’s coming back to life. Also picked up a couple 3M pads that attach to a drill and using it on the rails. So far so good!

Here’s a picture of the rail before. Shine pretty much non existent.

After compound and polish…

So what is it that you guys bought to do the clean, polish and wax? And how much was it all?

Got a little bigger boat and the hand compound and wax gonna take some real effort. Thinking automation may be the way to go.

rotary is for the compounding. good one will cost 2-300. harbor freight is 40. whichever one you get, make sure to use quality pads. i think i got 3 different density pads and 2 boat compounds for 130 on sale.

dual action is for final polishing / shining. same deal with the prices. i have 3 different light pads to bring out the final shine.

OK, you got me interested. I am going to take my ride off the lift next week for the annual maintenance (oil change etc). I have a two speed rotary sander that I can attach a wool pad to and a smaller porter cable random orbit sander.

Could you be so kind as letting us know the brand name of the compound and polish and more information on the pads?

Thank you sir!

as a rule of thumb, anything you can use on a car is safe for gelcoat. BUT NOT THE OTHER AWAY AROUND. a vehicle’s clear coat is much more delicate than gelcoat. just had to get that out there. there are some super heavy duty compounds out there, but for a boat that just has mild hazing (only a small part of mine has haze, but still shiny, so i will use a medium compound and foam pad) the car pads will work. for really heavy oxidation you will have to use wool pads and heavy compounds, but these are for more experienced operators. i use pads that are safe for car use.

these are suggestions (what i use)

finishing pads (for dual action)- i have these (orange, white, grey, and red) but they are more for a vehicle or dark color boat, as they are too fine to notice on a white boat.

compound (there are a lot of good ones out there, just stick with a name brand) - Marine 31 Gel Coat Gloss & Color Restorer, Marine 31 gel coat final step polish

Harbor freight rotary buffer. I’m using 3M marine rubbing compound and 3M finesse it glaze for the polish. Then waxing the entire boat. Might check into a few other things instead of the wax not really sure yet. I picked up wool compounding pads and polishing pads at autozone meguiars brand. They seem to be working pretty good. Its a lot of work but it’s worth it. Feeling of accomplishment when you see the shine start coming back. I probably spent about $200 on everything. Could I have paid someone to do it… Yes! To many people take the easy way out now a days in my opinion. I have a boat and I’m gonna take care of it myself.

Thanks y’all
I will make a trip to NAPA and west marine in the AM. I think all I will need is the pads, 3m compound, the 3m polish and then the wax. Of course I will be giving all this stuff to my wife as a birthday gift! I am sure she will have a grand time using it.
