Ill be vacationing on Edisto 6/21-6/28, bringing my boat down from Charleston. This time of year menhaden are inside the Charleston jetties in huge numbers.
To the local Edisto fishermen I ask, can Menhaden be reliably found around the island this time of year?
Ditto. All last week, all you had to do was ride in a creek, in the river, in the sound, and menhaden were flipping everywhere. One throw of the net should be all you need.
Thanks for the info guys. You were right, they were everywhere. Never had to throw the net more than once per trip.
On my last day I had to humiliate the fishing boat and pull a tube for the kids in the creek. One time the front end of the tube scooped up some water…and two menhaden! I couldnt figgure out why my young teen son was dancing around in the tube until he caught the pogies and tossed them out!
Yesterday, you could see the bottom and then you couldn’t because of the Menhaden. You could scoop them up with a dip net. They were out of control! Seems they run in a 3 year cycle. Fish on!!!

Now I’m getting really jacked up to get down there in a week and a half.
Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…

OK, now I may just leave the office a week and a half early and just say “the heck with it, I’m goin’ to Edisto”.

I fished out of there wednesday morning. Looked for bait for over an hour and still haven’t seen not ONE 'haden. And I’ve been spotting bait (and catching it!) since I was a tiny tot. Charleston harbor last week one cast had probably 140 in one net and within 30 seconds of starting the bait search we were fishing. NOT THE CASE wednesday in edisto! listen to these guys though, edisto is their turf, I’m new to the edisto parts!
They seem to be thinning out esp in the broad daylight.
But if you look at your sounder, you will see dark clouds, try casting over these spots and let your net sink down a lot. I think they are still there, just deeper.
Any other opinions?
Edit to add: My son was catching nets full off our dock on Store creek (by accident), …they weren’t “flicking” as much, so we didnt realize they were there.
