New golf cart ordinance

The town council has passed a new ordinance. According to the police dept facebook page, it seems like only residents will be able to drive golf carts at Edisto Beach. You must register it with the town and it must be registered to a property there by the property owner or a long term lessee.

What a crock of poo poo!! Part of the charm of edisto for my family is when we go on vacation, we bring the boat and the golf cart. We rarely ever have to drive a car for a whole week and it helps that the girls don’t have to walk to the beach from a second or third row beach house.

This sucks and hopefully somebody comes to their senses.

Sucks for us too. Edisto is the main reason we bought a golf cart. I guess I’ll have to abide by the law, maybe I’ll get rich one day and live down there. I think what’s good for the goose should be good for the gander?

Do any of the Council members have an Uber business? Follow the money.

I seriously doubt it, but they may have a hand in one of the golf cart rental buisinesses on the island. Probably not, though. The ordinance reads as though most people who live there are fed up with golf cart traffic on jungle road.

It really takes away my best shot at getting some serious fishing time, because Edisto really is the best of both worlds for my family and my wife doesn’t even want to go now. I grew up vacationing down there every summer and have continued the tradition with my family. Its my favorite place in the world to be. Hopefully this will get changed, but somehow I doubt it.

The ordinance doesn’t make too much sense to me but I believe it is reinforcing an extinging state law that restricts on road usage of golf carts to with in few miles of the address they are registered to. I don’t really understand the need for an additional ordinance when the existing law would just need to be enforced. There definitely are some recurring problems with golf carts down here in the summer and if I had to guess that is most likely the reason for council coming up with this ordinance.

anyone one want to go in and open another golf cart rental place there?

find the loophole- there is one for every law- if you know the address for you vacation rental- just register the cart with that address- or trade it in on a street legal cart- legally treated like a car they are not restricted by ordinances over golf carts, can be driven at night and are allowed to have a higher speed.
Think outside the box people.

Low speed vehicle.

Not unexpected. Edisto has always been my go to beach and a life long history of good memories. Guess a couple of the locals want to start keeping Edisto to themselves. If I go to Edisto and get behind a slow cart I just go with it and take in the scenery.

I’d say there are more problems with the locals kids acting stupid on a cart than a visitor bringing and using one.

If that were the case Fred the recurring golf cart issues wouldn’t be a problem just in the summer and during spring break. What I think is funny is that everyone is making this out to be a huge deal. What did people do down here 20 years ago bc there certainly weren’t golf carts everywhere back then.

I know this will ruffle a few feathers but make the golf carts ride on the bike path. I never understood why cyclists had to have a path all their own while automobiles were required to “share the road”. I should start a campaign to “share the path” or share the sidewalk". I would likely get lynched if I did though.

By the way, I love Edisto Beach and have been vacationing there for almost 50 years now. It’s my only vacation. And I don’t own a golf cart.

I rode many miles a bike at edisto when I was young. My daughters are too young to ride one now, but as soon as they are old enough, they will too. The golf cart is for the wife and kids to ride back and forth to the beach, and for quick trips to the grocery store or some other store. Its just a convienence we’ve had for about 10 years now, so we’ve gotten used to it.

I guess the Chucktown horse & buggy ride expansion is out of question now. Gonna have to tell the Amish don’t try & move to Edisto.

Government means take away your freedoms & then sell them back to you by fees, licenses, permits & taxes. Maybe next election there will be a MEGA candidate.

Im thinking golf car sales will increase!
Any home owning renters just need to buy one and include in the rental!!
I didnt see any clauses preventing this.

Unfortunately there is a little(or whole lot) of liability involved in doing that. More than most intelligent people would be willing to self insure against or pay the required premium on.

I dont consider myself unintelligent thank you.
Not saying that was your implication, but there are hundreds of beach rentals in SC and many of those on Edisto that include a cart. I totally understand the costliness of insuring such vehicles and liabilities.
In the big scheme of things, with the new laws most renters would most likely pay a few extra dollars to be able to take advantage of the amenities. Given it is legal! More than enough to offset the cost of a golf cart.

We can not totally control the acts of those we are not in total control of!

We trust they dont burn down down our multi million $ homes!

We Pray mother nature does not wash them away!

I love edisto! I love the non-commercialized edisto! I love freedom that lets me ride my 88yr old grandmother to the beach she took me to as a child to watch her great grandchildren play in GODS beauty!!!

I HATE!!!
Let me repeat, I HATE that a few drunken idiots, dumb teenagers, or possibly the chance someone is missing a buck or two cause her to miss that in her last years!

I understand your comment but I do not totally agree. It takes home owners, renters, and daily patrons to keep edisto what it is today!
I am now, or have been some of all the above.

I miss read you post and i do apologize for the tone of mine!
We are on the same page I belive.

As a homeowner at Edisto I think that the fact that Jungle Road is legal for golf carts and Palmetto is not legal for golf carts is a great compromise. I am healthy (thank you God) at 52 and do not need a golf cart does not mean that others do not need one. As long as the good Lord allows I will walk or ride a bicycle but when the day comes that I cannot I will appreciate being able to ride a golf cart.

Sounds like a solution to a problem that didn’t exist. I am a full time resident and live on Jungle. And yes, there are lots of golf carts during tourist season, but guess what. I live at the beach, and our economy depends on these people. Without tourists we would have no restaurants, no grocery or hardware store, and fewer police and firemen. I don’t mind sharing the beach with them for a few months for all that. Its Edisto. If you are in too much of a hurry to wait on the golf carts on Jungle, you probably don’t belong here anyway.
