Possible changes to Deer Management Laws

Cracker, what does the sporting aspect have to do with anything? It’s pretty sporting to deer hunt via jumping out of a tree with a Rambo knife. But you better not be jumping out of my tree without permission…get it?

Again, as far as I’m concerned, the argument is over. Dog hunters have lost. They may not realize it yet, but their days are numbered. This bill will take a big bite out of them. And the next one will be even bigger.

X2.

And, I bought the treepod for my Dad, Cracker, because he is getting older and having a hard time hitting deer these days, which is really none of your business, but I suppose there is always one who can’t resist the urge to stir the pot.

My kid or Dad will have a very hard time making ethical shots at distances over 100 yards. So, stir away against a clean one shot kill. BTW, the stairs are for Dad as well. He is having a hard time climbing the ladder on the other stand.

He who stirs the Sheite pot, should have to lick the spoon.

Thanks. The same to you as well. Dad is in his mid 60’s now, and he has a tough time after getting some heart stints in the last year. Just trying to make it easier on him and keep him doing something he likes for as long as I can. I worked by butt off on that thing. Pulled over 40 stumps so far too…mostly by hand and then yanking them out with the tractor. I’m ready to be done with it and move on to the easy stuff like planting it.

I fire back about the dog stuff bacause I make dang sure I don’t trespass because I abosultey HATE trespassing! And, I believe if it ain’t yours, leave it alone and stay away. But, it happens to me all the time, and it ONLY happens from dog hunters. Gets old.

If expecting to be left alone on my own property is unreasonable, by all means…someone show me the error of my ways.

Nothing wrong with your methods, motives or intentions to me, Skeeter, and no offense was meant to you :sunglasses: Any way you want to do it is OK with me. But if I want to dog hunt, I will. I’m also in my mid-60s, haven’t been hunting in a high rise condo yet, but maybe one day I will.

Exactly. And that was my point. Divided we fall.

Cool. Not telling you not to dog hunt. Do it. You are probably one of the good ones that we never hear about because of doing things the right way. Like Warbler, I’m sick and tired of the “Jacktards,” as Warbler put it, that think they can use my property and others as they see fit. That is my only complaint with it. Otherwise, dog hunting conducted properly is a very effective means of deer hunting…especially at the end of the season when the deer are more nocternal due to pressure. In the vien of the discussion, the bill does not say anything about dog hunting, but I can certainly see how it is a threat to the practice in the long term through logical reasoning and experience. Take care Cracker.

Georgia Cracker is a bird of a different feather, living in the middle of Nowhere Ga.,surrounded by dog driving club fanatics.

From what I’ve gleaned,he spends no money on food plots, planting, feeders and such.It does not matter if hounds blow through his property. When he wants to kill a deer,he can simply shoot one off a tree line, from the front porch.

Georgia Cracker is not the average deer hunter, more of an opportunist.

Not in SC after this bill and likely follow-on bill you won’t. Trust me, dog hunting is in its dying days in SC…thank God. You may be the most ethical of all dog hunters that’s ever lived, but that won’t matter. You should have done more to stop the outlaws of your “sacred tradition” (not your words, Cracker, but that’s the BS one always hears).

That depends. Are you talking heat seeking rounds or just tracers?

Pretty sure we settled it Skinnee. No need to keep it going. But, if you are trying to be comical, that is funny.

It was meant to be comical. My whole family hunts with rifles. I wouldn't hesitate to kill a deer with a rifle. But I also love dog hunting (even though I haven't been in years), and want to kill one with a bow, maybe one day with my spear gun. I guess you could say I am past the part of claiming one way is better\more sporting\more XYZ than the other. So, when given the chance, I like to make fun of the people who still feel that way! Obviously Cracker Larry is open to many forms of hunting, but I was just piggy backing off of his comment.

For anyone who thinks it’s productive to argue that one way is better than the other, they aren’t seeing the bigger picture!!!

Skinnee,

Killing one with a bow is rewarding, but very frustrating at the same time. I don’t care how high you get, those slick rascals will still pick you off with their sniffer. I killed 5 with a bow but gave it up. Bow hunting is more time consuming and life happens to all of us. Good luck with that spear gun…if you actually get one with it, you will be the talk of the town .

No doubt. Honestly I am more interested in shooting birds. I didn't deer hunt even 1 time last year, but my dad has been running a club for 30+ years now and I think he had a good year. He's been a member of that club before I was born. They would probably call DSS on him nowadays, but my dad has literally changed my diaper in the woods when I was a baby. I've killed many a deer with shotgun and rifle, but honestly just kind of lost interest in it.

You are correct, except that most of the dog hunters are also still hunters, and most of the still hunters are also dog hunters and none of them are fanatics. Dog hunt in the morning, still hunt in the evening, or vice versa, we all get along. Usually.

Correct again :smiley:I don’t need food plots, it’s hard enough to keep the vermin out of the garden and flower beds. The more those hounds run out, the better.

Opportunist? I beg your pardon. I have the opportunity every day to shoot a deer, but I seldom do. My preferred method of hunting is on foot in the swamps, with a bow or a handgun, close and personal. To me that’s “hunting”. I don’t climb trees. But most of the one’s I actually shoot are from the porch while they’re eating my collard greens. They’ve got to go! I usually use a handgun for those too, but that ain’t exactly hunting. There have been times when I considered dynamite  I take one deer a year for us to eat, any others from the garden are given away to people who need them.

E

Dynamite in the graden would be a sight. I bet an ole fat doe would get some good air time too…LMAO!. Although, the dynamite might do more damage to the collards than the deer. Yeah, we are way off topic now, but it’s cold and dreary out, the season is over, and we are waiting on the fish to get fired up again.

Me too Skinny. I’ve hunted for the better part of 60 years, starting with my dad in a dog club when I could barely walk. I’ve enjoyed hunting in every form, a good dog run or a 400 yard shot across a bean field, turkey with bow and arrow, or hogs with a dog, a knife and a piece of rope. Now I’d just as soon watch them in the yard and let them be. Age has something to do with it, and the thrill of killing something that doesn’t need killing about gone.

Agree with yall too that dog hunting is a dieing sport and it’s days are numbered. Hopefully my days have a shorter number though. I enjoy sitting of the porch and listening to the hounds.

Same here, and a limit of four bucks will aid in resisting the urge to shoot a smaller buck–at least for me. But, every now and then, I run across a little dirt bag that just needs to DIE. Ricky Raccoon won’t be tearing open trash bags at night anymore or stealing my deer corn either.
