Redfishing is on fire! Or maybe just I am

The last fishing trip took alot out of me so I rested up a few days. Got back out there today and the fishing was on fire. Semi clear water hit the beach from 6am - 11am. Tons of bluefish the first 30 mins I caught around 10. Chunked them up for bait on my two redfish rods. A couple mins later my rod took off. As soon as I picked it up it got off. It broke the hook. I started using these cheap Chinese hooks off eBay and that was the first one to break. I guess I should go back to the gamakatsu and owners. No worries I knew if they hit that fast there was more. Sure enough 10 mins later landed a big 40incher on those cheap hooks no problem. Got him back in the water was baiting my rod when my other rod started going off. This one I landed but the video didn’t record (must have not hit the button). So no pics on that one but it was 37 inches. The fishing died down and where I was I had to walk through a trough to get to a little sandbar to cast as the tide came in. So I moved spots cause it’s hard for me to go more than knee deep in the water anymore cause I’m afraid a stingray and shark is going to get me. So after moving spots about 30 mins later I hooked up. And when I mean hooked up it took about 100 yards off the spool without stopping. Took about 15 mins to land that one. I didn’t want to use too much pressure with the cheap hooks I had. That one measured 45 inches. After that one I was kind of worn out and had some neck pains so I called it a day. As I reeled in my last rod there was a 17 inch redfish that I didn’t even know was on. So I got a little bonus keeper for the grill.

I did take a video but the quality is bad because I was live streaming it to my family. I uploaded it on YouTube if anyone wants to take a gander. I’m thinking about buying a go pro chest mount and start recording my catches and loading them on youtube. What do y’all think?

Staying out on Dewees for a few days later this week. Won’t be far from the inlet. Any advice on selecting a location? Was planning to set up shop at the point where the inlet meets the ocean and cast out cut mullet and shrimp or whatever else I can catch or trap on the island. Doesn’t appear to be any structure along the beach. Sick fish you caught btw. I’ll be happy if I catch anything, but a few blues and good sized redfish or two like yours would be awesome. Just planning to use a fish finder rig or Carolina rig. Thanks!

Double drop steel rig with 5/0 circles. 3-6oz pyramid weight. Chuncks of bluefish whiting mullet between the size of a quarter and half dollar. Can’t miss them this time of year if you keep your lines baited. You don’t want your lines out there with nothing on them the bait stealers are out in full force. I went through a 2lb frozen bluefish 2 med sized whiting’s and 4 1lb fresh bluefish.

I think you had a good day and i would watch your videos. I also think this years redfish run could be epic. My right arm has some funky elbow pain in the tiny muscle in the joint from fishing sat, between cast neting, casting and fighting and landing fish i either did soemthing or overworked it. I was thinking about going tonight but wanted to give the elbow a rest. The big reds i caught the other day fought like heck. Steveo we’re tide up at 45inches for big reds this season. You took the big redfish title easily last year but im gunning for it/you since your back at it.

It would be cool if we could get a friendly competition on here of who can post up the biggest red this season. Im gonna post anyway but would love to know what everyone else is catching and it would be extra motivation for everyone to hit the beach seeing big fish reported. Good job on a good day and its game on now. lol

I’m with you on the reds fighting like heck. The 45 incher I caught today was like no other red I have caught. And yes I would happily do a competition my goal is to catch a 50+ this year. I feel like there is more people on this forum that catch big reds but don’t post for some reason. Maybe they don’t want there spots taken idk.

When you are fishing by yourself, do you run back and put the rod in the holder, lay it on the sand, or try and hold rod and fish at the same time?

BH

I keep my rods in the holders and wait for a bite. I never hold my rods and wait for bites.

Killin’ it again Mr. Stevo, Excellent.

Good stuff, Stevo!

Thanks, dude! Great advice and I really appreciate it.

Bhhands - lay rod in the sand? What the - Comon Man!

I’m not sure I phrased my question correctly. I usually fish with my wife and she can hold my fishing pole while I take the fish off the hook and quickly release it.

If fishing alone and you land a large fish, you might be 50 yards from you rod holder. What do people do when by themselves? Lay the reel on a towel? Try to hold everything? I may be coming down from Greenville solo soon.

BH

With redfish I stay pretty much where my rod holder is within 20ft. So I walk back and out it in the holder when the fish is beached. I’ve never had a fish die on me and I’ve had them out of the water a decent amount of time before. Just revive them till they are good to swim away

Wow bhands 50 yards? Would have to be a really, really big one. I’m with stevo, never more than 15’-30’ from sand spikes. I have only had to “chase” a fish down the beach once. Always have enough gear to work the fish not letting the fish work you. Many times though the big fish bite the smaller set ups. When ever I fish chunk bait though, I rig up the big guns.

Only time i ever got worked down away from my holders was when I hooked up a huge sting ray that kept pulling sideways. It was a pain haha

I have seen people take their ball cap off before and lay it on the beach before placing a rod down in a pinch. One thing that is important to do if ever putting a rod down for any reason is to make sure it is above the water line when a wave rolls in, and tighten the drag. It is like a top when left loose things call roll in it. Do this when washing off reels as well. It helps prevent sand and salt from pushing into the reel. The mucky sandy wash that rolls in can really screw a reel up if it rolls in on it on the beach. The other thing is that not all sand is created equal. Putting a rod down in thick powder sand is allot worse than laying it on the hard dark stuff like concrete. Not all reels are created equal either. Some are sealed substantially better than others. The shimano spheres is reported to be fully sealed by Allan hawk. Penn is getting ready to come out with the new spin fisher 6 model any day now. It is supposed to be heavily sealed as well. The old spinfisher 5’s are deeply discounted now all over the web. Offering huge savings. Beautiful fish Stevo:smiley: Ha, Stevo just got his fire and flames on this thread:smiley:

What type of leader do you use to connect the hooks to the rig? And can you find circle hooks that big with leader already on them?

Thanks!

Jonathan H

Walmart steel double rigs with 5/0 circle hooks

I got them for 1.98 but it looks like Amazon has them cheaper

Airkoul 20X Wire Trace Leader Rig Stainless Steel 2 Arm Fishing Rigs Tackle Lure Swivel Snaps Beads High-strength Fishing Wire

Thanks, staystrapped. WalMart it is (as it usually is for cheap gear).

So if I understand you guys correctly, the setup is like the below, right?

Never fished a setup like this so seems odd with no leader. Also, do you all use a heavy weight as a shock leader between the main line and rig?
