Someone stole a boat off of blocks at the marina parking lot. The bottom was being painted - I think it was a twenty five foot with a new motor. It seems as though there has been an increasing number of thefts at Edisto. Its ashamed, I can remember when you didn’t have to worry about anything down there.
That’s ridiculous! So many houses keep their boats trailered in the front yard there. I have left mine in the front yard of my parents and not thought twice about it. How bad is the thievery at EB? Or is that the 1st boat theft reported recently?
Someone stole a bicycle off our porch, in Fairfield recently. Not long ago, people did not even lock their doors in Edisto. It is a shame. Maybe the police need to work more on thievery, rather than trying to catch someone driving 40 mph.

WE had a triple axle trailer stolen from the parking lot last fall at the marina. The boat that was stolen was it the one that sank last fall? You got to have some balls to take a boat that is not on a trailer. Makes me wonder whether it was the same ones that took our trailer and if they used it to take the boat.

My house was broken into in 1987, two Internationals were stolen off my boat in 1990, and an anchor was taken off my john boat this year. From what I hear there’s a drug problem and theft goes hand in hand.

The boat that was stolen was not the one that sank but from what I here it did have a brand new 300 on it.
About ten months ago six eighties and three fifties that twere practicly new were stolen off of my friends boat.
My three box sets of dave chapelle was stolen off of the dash of my truck while I was walking on the beach. I have no ideah why they didn’t take the three hundred CD’s laying next to it though i’m glad they didn’t.
Seems like every weekend I go down there you here of something disappearing.

This seems like something that needs to brought to broader attention. The city should be able to add an officer or two to discourage this activity. If this happens often enough, the city will lose tax paying citizens, that would more than make up for the cost of controlling the problem.
A lot of loitering at locations on 174 by groups of teens and young adults ( more than likely for selling), and now a huge influx of illegals… oh yeah, you better start lockin stuff up.
Ive had all the electronics stolen off my mako twice the second time i had just finished installing them and when i cam down from eating dinner to shut the boat up they were gone. This was about 5 years ago though
This stuff goes on in every neighborhood, not just Edisto. Times have changed everywhere. Locking it up keeps the honest thief out. The life-long thief will steal anything. Go to MoneyMan Pawn Shop in Summerville and Charleston and you will find your stolen property.
When you bring home the new box of electronics the first thing you need to do is save the model and serial numbers somewhere safe. Then take a permanent marker and write your S.S # on the inside of anything you can get open just in case it shows up at a shop and you haven’t thought to do step #1. It’s also a good idea to mark all power tools with readily seen names, SS #'s etc… You would be surprised how many cases we make on recovered pawn items because people took the time and effort. Free pro tip from the fuzz.
Don’t use SS#!!! Never write down your SS# in an unsecure place. Put your initials, Phone#, name of your pet or something that you can say “open the case and _______ will be inscribed”. Serial #s are your best bet.
That does seem crazy, with so many boats on trailers ready to roll, why would someone take one off blocks out in the open parking lot?
My father in-law had his lawn mower and weed eater stolen last summer from his car port.

I’m not talking about writing down a SS# on the outside of the item in plain view. You can also use a DL #. And yes I’m familiar with identity theft and realize that a person could potentially steal your SS#, yes I know. But how about when the guy is arrested with a truck load of stolen merchandise? How are you going to identify the items unless there is either a serial # ( which all valuables do not always carry) or something that can be referenced only to that victim? I’ve just seen the SS# thing work many times that we have recovered stolen goods and returned them to the owner via the SS #. If they write “dweezil” or “sparky” on it there is no certain way to find the true owner if recovered without the owner being present ( which is actually quite common in police work).
Somebody cleaned out my minnow trap in the little creek behind the third row of houses right before I got there. They threw the trap up on the bank and there was a minnow still flipping in there. This was at five in the morning.

A couple of guys need to set up a sting. Set up a few boats for bait and catch them with whatever weapon you prefer. Somebody broke into my truck and enclosed trailer several months ago and got about $2500 worth of tools and personal stuff. Other people have gotten the whole trailer stolen (by the way, they sometimes don’t cut the locks, they unscrew the bolts at the hinges and take the door off, empty it and put the door back on) so double-nut, or slip-nut the bolts.
I’ve been wanting to set up a trap ever since.
I’d give the guy a ride in the trailer with his hands ziptied behind his back down a nice bumpy road and into the swamp somewhere. For a boat crime, it would be a ride offshore and a reef donation (unless he’s a hell of a swimmer).
It’s a bad feel when something of yours is stolen.
My company is trying to build implants (small Gps trackable components, that don’t cost much, that can be user installed in a discreet location to be able to track and recover items. It comes with a warning sticker (similar to below). I’m also working on street cams that track license plates as they enter/exit subdivisions and other areas of interest.
There are alot of devices that can warn you when something’s been bumped or in the proximity of something for very little price these days (everything’s wireless). I can get just about anything of such, from surveillance to devices that let you know the water’s too high in your boat at the dock. If someone needs anything, let me know.
In the meantime, orange stickers that say “this ______ has a concealed GPS tracking device installed…you will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!!!” written in english and spanish can probably deter someone a little more.
It’s hard to deter from crime, and hard to know whats within your rights to defend what you own. But I’m interested in the fight.

Hey Kloud the same thing happened to me only I had my trap in a creek near BB road. How low does someone have to be to ruin a mans fishing trip over a few mud minnows.

Best deterrence would be for someone to shoot a couple of the drug addict SOBs.

I have thought about this alot since my trailer was stolen from the parking lot of the marina. At 4:00 am there is not alot of activity around the island. Most decent people are in bed at that time of the morning. If a man wants to steal from good people he can do it because you feal safe and let your guard down.I hate to think you cant let your guard down and relax but crime follows us. It is a shame we cant go back to the old days when doors were unlocked and left that way. My dog says you will not come in my house if I am away but I wish I didnt have to dig in my pocket for a key to check on her. Oh the good ole days!
