And, since we’re talking about admin, if I were them, I wouldn’t appreciate a bunch of has-been commercial guys pounding their chest about fishing in high seas, when most of the folks on this site are seeking advice. Hell, after reading the moronic posts in this thread, if I didn’t know better, I’d think it was routine business to leave the dock when the forecast calls for five footers. Hell, maybe even leave the dock in the face of a small craft advisory. Lunacy!

Tell us again about the shrimpers not being bad guys because there’s no live bottom within three miles of the beach…lololololol. That’s pure comedy, captain.

Darn Warbler, you’ve been on this site about 6 months and have pissed off more people, than I have in 13 years! How do you get so right about stuff, where you can disregard and denigrate others, year’s of experience?

PS: And I can be pretty good at pissing people off:wink:

Warbler, what sea state do you consider it if a 27ft boston whaler can’t go directly into the wind or directly downwind without getting green water over the bow and has to zig zag to get home?

Less than 5ft seas?

What about if you’re in a boat fishing 100ft away from a 20ft Bertram and every few seconds you cannot even see the top of its antenna?

Less than 5ft seas?

Finally, what if you’re halibut fishing 15 miles away from a snow covered volcano in Alaska and the volcano disappears when you go into a wave trough (that’s when you’re reeling hard, btw).

Less than 5ft seas?

Just curious.

Good stuff!!

Warbler, think I found your nest…But I gotta come in heavy lol…ooops, you changed it again!

Easy, I just call BS when I see it. Commercial fishermen have a big old blind spot when it comes to a lot of things regarding fishing and this thread just further proves the point. My comment to Larry about the live bottom near the beach is in reference to something he said a while back on the cobia thread…it was a laughable comment that he’s never owned up to.

Thought you were saving all of them:smiley::question:

Not many "head out" in them, but many "head home" in them...

As mentioned before, I would not generally venture out in a 5’ sea, but if I had a flat ocean in the morning with the threat of 5’ seas in the afternoon, it wouldn’t stop me.

Also do not forget that not every wave is equal height. The 41004 buoy shows AVERAGE wave height. So, if it read 4.3 or 4.6, then you have seen a fair share of “5 foot seas”…

Also, what kind of interval are we talking about in a “5 foot sea”? I pay a lot more attention to wind and wave interval than I do wave height… Give me 6 foot seas at 10-11 seconds tomorrow and let’s drop the hammer down…

Not sure…I recall some talking about “steep” 5’ers here so I’d say 5-6 second average?

The OP fished on what appears to be a mid-twenties CC…the convo picked up with that and then strayed talking about charter captains and headboats (One would assume much larger than 25’) doing it 300 days a year and fishing in 5’ers.

Nobody here tries to fish in steep 5’ers. Sure, they get caught in them, but it’s not as easy as some here were trying to make it sound…in a 25’ CC.

That’s all I was saying. Hell, I don’t even like fishing 5’ers on Slay Ride…until I’ve filled up on beer.

On head boats 5’+ seas were do able because at anchor we would have one crest on the bow, one in the middle and one astern progressing, and the boat would stay relatively stable. On the charter boats that I ran in heavier seas we would try to run through the troughs. The point is to know what your vessel can safely handle, and what your passengers can tolerate. I heard this 1000 times - " the Captain of a vessel is inescapablebly responsible for the safety of his passengers and the vessel"

I agree on larger boats not having much of an issue in 5’ers. Done it on more than a few occasions in anything from 36 to 60’ boats. I’m really just speaking about boats the size of what the OP was fishing and commented on.

In my younger days (17-25ish), I went out in a lot of stuff I wouldn’t necessarily go out in now. Somewhat over that, but I do know it can blow up.

How big are these seas?

6’+ at 12 secs

While we are at it…hard to judge, but 10’ers greeting us one winter busting out of Jupiter Inlet…this was in cockpit of 36’ Hatteras. Plenty bigger boats turned around that day…

The key is like SkinneeJ said, it’s all about the interval, that day we were fishing out of a 24ft cc, I wasn’t rough at all, just large swell

I agree, but the convo started off with “steep” 5’ers, I thought.
