Shark fishing

First off I just joined the site and wanted to say hey to everyone. I’ve been a lurker for a while and figured I’d better sign up and post.

I wondered if there were any sharkers out there and if they could tell me when I could expect some of the bigger sharks to show back up at Edisto Beach. I fish from shore usually around Bay Point and am hoping to hook up with some big bulls or blacktips. I figure mid to late march is about as early as they may get there, but would love some tips.

Also any advise on locations and tactics for bigger sharks would be awesome. I’ve done ok with the 3 footers, but want some five or sixes. Thanks.

Welcome. Check out the forum offshore discussion under the shark topic.

Life is not measured by how many breaths you take, but how many times something in your life takes your breath away.

Hey thanks for the replies

that shark thread on the offshore board had some good info on it

edisto may i ask what he uses for bait?i plan camping at edisto this summer any suggestions.i mainly be surf fishing.

There are some king sized Tigers off the 3300 block of Edisto. I’ve caught them there.

Straight across the sound near the old pile is a good spot too if you have a boat. Right on the drop off the Pine Is flat.

Alright!! Fellow sharksters, nice!! Hey chumrunner, I saw your post on the surf and pier boards. Not to discourage you, but I dont think the 4/0 will be up to fighting the big tigers. It’s not that you dont have enough line, well actually it is, because the drag pressure on the 4/0 wont do much to tire a large tiger and you’ll get stripped to the bone! A fella that used to live here years ago and fished sharks from the beach told me even a 12/0 was cutting it close and was his absolute minimum recommendation. He was stripped a few times on his 12 and got down to the spindle on his 14/0 on several occasions. Now these might be some fish stories he was telling me, but the hard core dudes I saw doing this on Jykle Island last year had nothing smaller than a 12/0 in thier cart. Either way. it’s enough to fire a person up when seeing and reading all this. I cant wait! I have been scoring some great deals on reels during the off season and should have what ever it takes to drag them in!! Maybe we’ll see you out there one day! I met a nice couple last year who are as eat up with this as I am and are ready to do battle with me this year lol. Nice to have a good pit crew, (we have also become good friends), just in case one gets the run of a life time.
Cheers!

THE OCEAN IS NOT A SWIMMING POOL!!

Yeah I figured…dare to dream lol:smiley:. I’m not really planning on putting a large enough bait out there to get picked up by something too big (I hope). Can I assume that for the most part I could match the size of the bait to the size fish I want to target. Granted that there’s always the possibility of hooking a freight train. Thanks for the info. I wasn’t really going to go after anything too huge with my tackle. If not the line, I know the drag wouldn’t be enough to slow down a big one. I will probably invest in a 12/0 before I start yaking out the whole stingrays:sunglasses:.

I’ve heard the bigger the bait the bigger the fish. Seems to have held fairly true so far. Although this one was caught on a finger mullet and spinning rod lol. I suppose the bigger ones wouldn’t turn down a little “finger food” if they happen to be swimming by. Look for the PENN International wide reels too. I found some great deals this winter, cheaper than the old Senators!

Your son helped us out Jford. That was my daughter with her 188# Lemon. Thanks again for the lift your wife and son gave us that night.
As far as sharking in general, we have had good success over the years from both beaches and boats. Lemons abound along with tigers, bulls and blacktips. For some reason we don’t get many hammers. I think it’s because the the Lemons won’t stay off the bait long enogh for anything else to get a taste.

Where is the “point” located?

Yea I remember that summer. They were down for two weeks at campground. I was down for two long weekends. Had to work. Got down late - opened up the tailgate to get my rigs ready and wheeew! What you had in my truck?? [:0]Oh - just hauled a big shark the other night from the point. Those were some nice ones - saw some pics.

The point starts at 2800 and goes to 3200 block. The only parking area by a walk access is at those two blocks. Walkways in between don’t have a good place to park. The real corner is at about 3000 out in front of the big pink house with green roof. It has a narrow gap over to where the bar starts that goes over to the green can.(real swift in the gap at mid tide)

You always end up with a mixed bag on the point. Usually can count on small sharpnose and whiting. Have got blues, blacks, pomps, ladies, and flounder. You see a lot of schooling activity up on that bar where the breakers are. Lots of boats sit there for hours for a reason.

Talking about shark reels. There are sharks and there are SHARKS. I use a 309 and a 113 Penn and a big Daiwa spinner. Will handle the sharks:slightly_smiling_face: but, not the SHARKS.:face_with_head_bandage: Especially if you are on the hill and not in a boat where you can give chase. Those big ones way out with a big bait you need a winch of a reel. 4/0 about the same as a 113(350yrdsx30#) - gonna get your feelings hurt. I hung a 10’ spinner on that 113 once - he didn’t know I was there. I did good making him jump. He ran when and where he wanted - no turning him. Saved me a spooling when he bit me off.

Dang it! Now I’m gonna have to go out and buy another reel . I’ll probably get a 9/0. Don’t know if I can handle anything bigger (I’m pretty small). Oh no… I guess I’m gonna need a rod to go with it too. I’ll tell my wife there’s just no way around it .

Just curious, what kind/size of bait did you hook that spinner on? I only have a 4/0 at the moment and want to make sure I don’t go too big with the bait.

boaters world has a decent stand up rod that would go nicely with a 9/0. It’s a power stick by offshore out fitters. 80 to 100# class, aluminum reel seat, and nice ceramic guides. $80.00. thats a good value for a rod like that. Should handle just about anything the 9/0 can for sure.

Thanks for the info. It will be awhile before I can get any more equipment, but I’m always “window shopping”. Yeah gotta go and get one of those job thingies first

I was actually king fishing off Springmaid Pier when I hung that 10’ spinner. Had a live 16" bluefish on for bait. 10’ x 108# stainless leader and 5 & 7/0 hooks. He clipped the leader like a pair of dikes[:0], after two long runs and two jumps. That sucker came a good 9-10’ out the water. Would give anything to have had some pics. Had 30# Ande mono on the reel. I know better now on the leaders. Got some 250# ss cable.:slightly_smiling_face:

113 will handle the kings, med size sharks - general bottom fishing. I’ve got 4’-5’ sharks to the boat with the 113 and the 4500 Daiwa spin pretty easy. Got a 5’ wide ray to the boat on a 209 - after he whipped my butt for 30 minutes.

One good option with the 4/0 would be to spool up with 50-80# braid. You will have plenty of line weight and should hold a lot more yards than mono. Might get you by and save some money. If the drag holds out you may can handle more than you think before you run out of line. May want to wait and see - if you get spooled it then might be time for a bigger outfit. See how many and how big before that happens. You can always jump in your yak if line runs short and go for the sleighride!:smiley:

That’s an awesome story man!

Yeah I’ve already got about 600 yds of 50# braid on the 4/0 with about 200 yds of 40# mono as a topshot. I went with a slightly lighter test for the topper so that if i get spooled, hopefully I’ll just lose the mono and not all the braid. The drag is my only concern. I’m really not targeting anything over 6 ft though so I should do ok for the time being.

I was actually out at Edisto this past weekend for a little sharking “practice” catching spiny dogfish. I figured I may as well target the only fish I knew would be biting this time of year instead of going after other species and being annoyed at pulling in “another stinkin’ dogfish.” I also really wanted to put my wife on to some fish and those doggies didn’t disappoint. We ended up with seven of them in about 2 hrs. All in the 2-3 ft range. Real fun on light tackle.

Here’s a pic of my wife with her first shark and also biggest fish.

And although not very sporting, I though I would get some practice dropping off baits with the yak past the drop-off. This is the crazy part. I was using whole “corncob” mullet as bait and I couldn’t even get back to shore before I had a fish on[:0]. After hauling in two and missing a third I was too wore out to keep up with the pace. Definitely a productive tactic though. Can’t wait for warmer weather:sunglasses:

Tight lines,
Chum
