chumrunner if you want a couple more 4/0s let me know.i have several i don’t use.
Thanks a lot for the offer, but I think I’m gonna save up for one more setup and I’m looking for something bigger. Still can’t decide between a 9/0 and a 12/0. I’ve already got more stuff than I can fit in my car. I think I’m also going to have to make some more holders for my cart. Between bait rods, heavy surf casting setups and fighting rods for the big boys you’re wore out by the time you get all your stuff out to the beach:stuck_out_tongue: I envy those guys out in texas and up in NC that can drive on the beach and fish out of their trucks.

in the middle of march I’m going to Edisto beach state park to do some camping. Ive got 2 10’ rods with spinning reels on them. one is spooled with about 300 yards of 25 lb mono and the other i am re-spooling with about 400 yards of braided. I’ve fished at the Isle of Palms a lot but haven’t caught any sharks other than a few small Atlantic Sharpnose about 2 feet long. I use a 80 lb wire leader with anything from a 4/0 to a 11/0 circle hook. For bait I have used Mullet, squid, and Blue Crabs. I’ve heard that Edisto has got some decent sized sharks and would love to catch one. Just wondering if anyone has some tips that would help? Also I was wondering where the closest bait shop might be?
You can get frozen bait at Edistonian, and Gas Station on Corner. Fresh and frozen at Marina, and Edisto Watersports. Can get shrimp at Flowers on 174, or Bell Bouy or Edisto Seafood. All those back on Jungle Rd at Marina end of island but, Flowers. Some time the markets have other fresh bait as well. Have to check.
Bigger fish? - Big fat nasty mullet with a couple knife holes.[:0] Use stinger hooks and a long leader.
Jeremy’s Inlet, Point and sound is best if on surf. By boat the point shoals, drops and humps in the sound or the in the N Edisto - same, also by Devaraux(sp)Banks. Off the points and on the channel drops.
PS; They have a big shark tourney out of Bennetts Pt every summer in August I think. Do a search - had some nice pics on here from the last one. I think most all came from sound and rivers and nearshore.

Hey Chum, those little spiney’s you caught would go well on the end of my 14/0! lol. I bet the Tigers would like those when they move in this summer! Wonder if they would keep frozen till it’s time to drown them lol.
THE OCEAN IS NOT YOUR SWIMMING POOL!!!
I sure would love to see a tiger that would snack on a three foot shark!! That would be nuts!

I have caught several sharks off the shore but most were to little to kept. Fishing the point at Big Bay and then the 3000 block has been my better success. Best shark yet was a 7 ft black tip last July with my wife. Now I have a hard time going bymyself. I caught it on half of a whiting. I use 4/0 peen reels with 80 lb test and I could see the spool before he turned. Hard to get him in but did. Hope you get that big one.
can u guys give me the coordinates to this b-can and the 3000 block?
If you park at 2800 access spot - walk to beach - go down to the right past 2 groins. There is a channel between the beach and bar at low tide. At low tide you can just reach the near side of the bar with a smoking cast on a surf rod. Looking straight out about 250yds is the green can. All to the left of it is the bar and breakers. Off to the right of it and maybe one more groin down the beach, it drops off into the main channel down the south end of the island heading up the Edisto side of the sound. Some of the deepest water in that area is right there. That’s where the “mogans” are.

How much of 80lbs. line is recommended to be used to catch the bigger sharks? thanks
A 4/0 is not going to hold much 80 # mono as demonstrated by Popparod. A 6/0 will hold approximately 320 yds of 60# mono. Depending how far out you set the bait, you wont have much in reserve for the fight. Even if you spool the 4/0, 6/0 with heavier line, keep in mind the small drag pressures these smaller reels are only capable of. My 9/0 will only hold 400 yds of 80# mono but will hold 720 yds of 50# mono. So it is spooled with 50# with the final 200 yds being an 80# top shot. But I yak this one out about 250yds. I guarantee popparod had a nice little fight on his hand with that 7 footer on a 4/0! I will be yaking with no smaller than the 9/0 this year with some bigger gear standing by should the sharks prove to be of large size! Maybe you could spool your 4/0 with 50# mono with say 50 to 100 yds 80# top shot?? Just a thought. It would give you some extra capacity to let the shark tire.

I have a 9/0 and i was wondering how much 80lbs line it could hold. Do you think a shimano tyrnos 30 two speed would be a good reel to use to kayak a bait out?
The 9/0 should hold 400yds of 80# as stated. The tyrnos 30 should work for the smaller sharks. But keep in mind, if a large one makes a run on it, your drag could be toast. If you plan on yaking out, I would go with the 9/0 to be safe. Personally I would like to spool up with some super braid and top shot it with some heavy mono. But man that super braid is high $$$
THE OCEAN IS NOT YOUR SWIMMING POOL!!!
I was wondering if there would be any advantage to using dacron for backing and topping with mono instead of super braid. It’s not as thin, but thinner than mono so it would give you some gain in yardage and it’s cheaper than reg. braid.

I thought of that too Chum and I have a 12/0 spooled with Dac. But my understanding is that it absorbs water and gets heavy, and worse than that, it will not handle abraison on sand and shells for beans!! I’m not going to use it now as I was told and I quote, “use it and learn the hard way!” As much as I replaced my mono top shot last season due to abrasion, I tend to believe it!
THE OCEAN IS NOT YOUR SWIMMING POOL!!!
Yeah I heard the same things about dacron too and personally I don’t think braid holds up to abrasion too well either, but I figured on having about half mono so the dacron wouldn’t even come out unless something big takes out some serious line. I would think that with 300+ yds of mono out in front it would keep the dacron off of the bottom. Just a thought but maybe just better to go all mono and not risk it.

Is that 400 yds. of braid or mono?
I also found this if anyone is looking for an extra 9/0:
http://charleston.craigslist.org/spo/590355721.html
It’ll hold 400 of 80# mono. Close to 700 of 50.

What size rod do you guys use?
