Hey stuck, welcome. As Sharky said there are some good shark threads goin on right now in the surf and pier forum. Size of rod? All depends what reel and technique you will be wishing with. If you will be casting your rig, then you will want a long surf rod to reach as far out as you can. 10’ to 12’ foot is the norm for surf casting. Heavy action and fast tip will help get you out there once you learn to load them up during the cast. I use both 12 and 10ft with my spinning reels. Now if your going you kayak baits out with a big conventional reel, short stand up boat rods 6’ and under is the call, 50# to 100# line class should handle just about anything. The shorter rod will give you more leverage against large fish. You will also need a belt harness of some type to stable the rod during the fight. I will be running a pair of 5’9" heavy action 50 to 100# class line rods with 80w reels. Roller guides are not required and will just add to maintenance if fished in the sand. Hope this helps, good luck!
Thanks racrx. Ive got 2 10’ rods. i just need to get some heavier line to put on them. Im thinking about braided line so i can fit more on the reel. Any suggestions on how to rig them up. all of the small sharks that i have caught have been on a double hook bottom rig. i think most people use a slip-lead rig with a heavy wire leader.
I make all my own leaders and rigs, but they are basically renditions of what you described. I learned alot last year on this topic the hard way. I lost as many as I caught last year due to leader and rig failure!! I will try and post up a pic of what I use for surf casting. I will give you a tip though, most of the pre made rigs you can buy in tackle shops will fail!!! Especially if you hook any spinner sharks. They will cut thru 135# coated leader like dental floss, and not at the hook either!! When they twist and leap in the air they have the ability catch any slack in their mouth and cut it. I had one bite back 2’ on a leader and it was a clean cut. The only place in town that I personaly have found to carry decent leader wire is Boaters World. It’s 49 strand 7x7 stainless wire by American Fishing Wire. They carry all the way up to 900# rating and come in 30 ft rolls. I’ll post up some pics tomorrow for you.
Cheers
Sharky, I will try to spool one with 150# super braid if I can find a deal on a 1500 yd or bigger spool, with a mono top shot. The other will be 80# mono with 100# top shot mono. I would be careful going with 50# mono on an 80 class real as the drag pressures can get high, especially as line pays out the pressure increases. If you havent already done so, research setting the drag on a lever drag real.
Oh ok, got you. Thought you were talking line test. My bad sorry. I was considering the 50W with super braid, but got a killer deal on the two 80W one of which is a two speed. I think the 80W’s will hold 950yds of 80# mono. But think of the amount of super braid it would hold. Here’s the sad kicker. The super braid line will cost more than I paid for the reels!!!
Hey Stuck, Here are some pics of the rigs I make and use. The one on the left is what I use on my Surf spinning rig. It’s about 7’ long total lenth and should be good for that lenth of shark. I may up the hook size to a Super Mutu 12/0. The one on the left will be for my yaking rig its incomplete but you get the picture.
I just spent $106.00 on 150 lb Momoi diamond braid for my 9/0. I put a base of 80 lb Dacron, then 600 yds. of braid. I am using it for deep dropping for Sword (daytime).

Hey Sells did you get that braid in a bulk spool or was it done for you by a shop. I ask because I’m looking for some super braid for my 80w and looking for a good price. Sharky put me on a link on ebay for some 100#, but I think I want stronger for the 80.
Thanks
Hey andre that weight on the right looks like one of my anchors i use for king fishing off the pier i lost a couple years ago…lol

I had it spooled at Hadrells west ashtray, by John. They were cheaper than buying bulk, unless I wanted Power Pro…which I did not, due to line failure in the higher weights.

Sells do you any good with the deep droping for daytime swords here. One of My good friends runs a boat out of islemarada (sp) and he was doing really good deep droping for them down there.
