I plan on fishing IOP this weekend for sharks. A friend told me they were starting to show up. Any truth in this? If not, when can I expect them to come in
When the water hits 65 degrees you can be sure they are around. The sharpnose are around and rumor has it a blacktip was caught in CHS area already.

BTs are definitely running right now. Fresh whiting is the ticket!
Can ANYONE lead me to where I can catch big black tips, I have tried for almost 2 years with little luck on Sullivan’s! I use fresh whiting on a carolina rig with 4 oz Sputnik and don’t catch much but rays, any certain beaches or streets/stations I should try ? I fish every weekend almost and never have luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Try IOP or south FB on the County Park.
Are you using wire or cable leader?
Hard wire

That should work.
Not sure what your approach has been, but you need to find deeper water which means wading out to about waist/chest deep and casting.
Do you have any experience catching sharks?
If not, just let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be more than happy to help.
I have a good bit of experience out in the harbor in my john boat but I have gone more towards surf fishing:smiley: but thank you very much, also isn’t it crowded on the south end of fb by the park?

Just depends on when you are fishing. Early Sunday morning is your best bet for the weekend. I would avoid Folly on Saturday.
In general, I would fish early in the morning or late afternoon. Bite is probably better during those hours depending on the tide, and a lot less people on the beach.
Fished south side of FB on Saturday and Sunday incoming tide to peak high tide. A few nibbles on Saturday but got completely skunked, it was odd because although the wind was up and the water was merky it was very warm. Fished is again on Sunday until dark, caught 4 whiting over the course of 3 hours and then this little guy. Really happy to see the sharks coming back.
Does anyone know what kind of shark this is? It was a baby, only about a foot and a half or so.
I also have another question that I was hoping you guys could help me with. I’ve been using double drop rigs with mono for some time now, and when I hooked a big red a week ago he broke the line attached to the hook (I use braided line on the reel, can’t break that if he tried). Because I often catch sharks there as well, I was considering using wire leaders instead of mono but have heard rumors that drum won’t bite that. Is there any truth to this? Why mono over wire?
Looks like a blacktip to me. Bonnetheads are in the Folly creeks now. Cut blue crab or frozen softshells gets 'em.
I use braid for my mainline with a 20-30lb test fluorocarbon leader. I would only use wire if you are targeting sharks. I have had my leader break with large reds, but most likely due to either a weak spot, or a bad knot. Check your leader when you check bait or rebait. If you have any weak or frayed spots, replace leader.
I have had big redfish hit bait with my wire leaders. The only way you will be able to catch bigger sharks is if you make your own leaders. It isn’t hard to do, I have caught sharks over 6 feet from the beach and a couple 200 lb lemons from my boat. I know a couple places you can take your Jon boat and catch some really nice sharks. If you are interested in some of my methods shoot me a message and I can give you some more detail. BTW Sullivans has never really produce any size shark that is worth anything, I am not saying they are not there though.
big reds will definitely hit wire, especially considering they often bite best at night and in dirty/murky stirred up surf conditions. I would say if you are bothering with getting the bait out past the breakers you may as well use some wire/cable. even if just a short bite leader to a longer mono chaffing leader. if just fishing the troughs and jetties or what not then 20-30lb mono dropper loops should be plenty. my 2 cents
Fished yesterday and caught some sharks of Edisto Beach State Park. Couple of guys were catching them too… Even threw in a Bonnet head.
I fished the Folly pier this morning, 04/28, and caught 2 sharks and 6 weakfish.
I plan on doing some surf fishing this weekend.
btshipp, the pic you have is a Atlantic Sharpnose. Most likely this springs litter. They are born live, 11-15" long.
