I have been hearing reports of snapped outrigger poles and broken radar mounts out of the upper Ashley River area. Must be some dude with a mono hull…
Coming from the guy who had to use his SPOT offshore last year to call SEATOW!!!
Maybe #1 on your wish list should be “A boat that get’s me home!”
Anyone who is not a SeaTow or TowboatUS member, please raise your hand. Or just nod if you’re too modest to admit that you know your boat will never need towing, a jump, or extra gas.
Skinnee, the SPOT made it easier on seatow when a T storm on shore knocked their high rise VHF out temporarily. I talked to Georgetown via VHF and talked to Charleston via SPOT. I highly recommend the services to you even though you can just use your wireless phone down in Miami and apparently think your boat will never be in need of their services…
How fun is it to come in on one engine or get towed when you’re in a cat hull?
(I have no idea- serious question.)
Maybe cat hulls never have engine electrical systems screw up. Maybe they never need towing either. I need to hear about this if anyone has any experience.
Fun trivia… guess which boat seatow came to me in to give me a jump and then let me run in behind?
A) catamaran
B) mono hull
No problem running in on one engine in the GB. Boat will do about 11-12 knots on 1 engine.
Don’t get too worked up. I was just responding to your jab earlier.
Per your “What does Sea Tow use” reference… Just remember, your view of Charleston Harbor is a small depiction of a local market and not necessarily what it looks like in the rest of the world. Cats are gaining in popularity and used a lot as commercial boats overseas. There are plenty of catamarans out there. I can say that none of them use Lowrance though . I guess they figure that there is no reason to junk up a perfectly good catamaran!
It’s really a matter of preference. I’ve owned both style boats, v-hull and catamaran. Can you make the same claim? Each has their ups and downs.
All I can say is, “wow”! I have not even looked at the Offshore Discussion page. I have only looked the reports lately. Quite the discussion here.
I am the owner of the blue hull 36YF, IT’LL DO. I know it is not a perfect boat, but I wanted a good looking, faster, safer, and better ride than the last boat. I wanted to fish later and get home quicker from the Ledge while not injuring my bad back having L4-L5 problems. They were a few times last year, my back killed me from the pounding. I am not as young as I used to be. Even with this boat, I am not going to go crazy to plow through every wave.
If I was really worried about fuel, I would stayed with the past boat. I burn on the IT’LL DO 1.2 mpg, crusing 41mph and have had the boat go bewteen 35 to 49 mph to and from the jetties. We came back 38 mph on Sunday in 3’ by 4 sec intervals from up North against the SE wind. It was my 6th time offshore on the boat and I am still experimenting in how to best run it with the trim and the tabs against whatever seas.
So far, I am pleased with the performance, the room, the electronics, the layout, etc. Right now, I do not have a negative except trying to figure how to best keep the ice without coolers. Again, I am still experimenting with things. It might take me 150 hours to figure it out. I will say on this past Sunday, the faster the better it felt with two 11 year old boys and the rest of us “old guys” over 40. I should have picked it up over 42mph, but held back.
Boats can be compared to ice cream. Some people like chocolate or they may like vanilla. It is what somebody likes the most. That is why they make so many flavors. I just happen to like this flavor of boat.
Bully, if you would like to ride one day, let me know. I am sure the Freeman is a wonderful boat and wish you lots of success.
Hey Mr. IT’LL DO, Real interesting how they all get up on their hind legs when YF is compared to anything. (CF, The Hull Truth,…)
Prior to my current ride I rode in all the top monos that had a fair selection of used boats available. I can not fault my selection, someone else can, perhaps. I saw many cat hulls in commercial use but didn’t give them a shot. No excuse.
I spoke with Billy before a trip to Venice last October and he mentioned the availability of his products there. We fished 6 days there in conditions less than 4’. Spent one day on Cayjun Odysea, a Freeman 33. It is all he claims. Set up to fish a long way off and be able to do it day after day. Twin 350 Yamahas @ WOT always when running @ 80 gph on our nickel made transits lively (65mph)& memorable ($$).
The 5 days we fished my boat we ran 35mph @ 23 gph (raised similar fish, ran a little longer but saved a few nickels). We kept dry but needed slickers for the early AM temps. If anyone wants to buy me wings then have at it, I’m behind the window!
Last Summer we fished 26 days between 23 April and 30 June out of Charleston - Ran 35 all the time. Had to use tabs some days to bull thru but the motors never barked. It was sporty a good 1/3 of the trips out. We weren’t trying to prove anything. Some days I could find only one person to go fish. If the wind was pushing 20 and on the beam the windward person would need to rinse his glasses off now & then but kicking it up several mph would prevent it. Bottom fishing is not uncomfortable all around. We’ve had as many as 9 several times and the only issue is locating an idle dehooking tool. Castnetting off the deck forward or bow has been workable by 5’8" folks.
I’ve put over 600 hours on the motors (34YF w/ 250 Suzuki’s) in less than 14 months, had one trip offshore on a Freeman 33 being chauffeured, a dozen 30 minute rides on the other 27’-36’ CC boats: Me Biased? Absolutely! Fair comparison? Heck no, but I’m gonna hang with my current coolaid.
Itll Do I have a YF too. The faster you run it the better it rides. I have crossed the gulf stream twice in mine going to and from the bahamas, one trip kicked up 8ft and still made 26 knots. That is getting it done. And to those that say we beat every screw out, I had 10 days worth of groceries and didnt even break a single egg.
I know what I will put my money on, already have. Wylie is making the best center console in the business right now, and if I didnt pick it I would go with a Sea Vee. If this race gets put off until FFM then I maybe your huckleberry Bully. Unless it sells before then, got bigger plans.
Your boat looks sharp. But you wont ever catch me on a cat!
If the comedy channel on your XM goes out switch your VHF to 68.
Hey Bolbie been really busy, dont really check this site too often anymore, between the dead billfish floating belly up and the 17 bay boats going offshore there isnt a lot of useful info here anymore.
Hope everything is going well for you.

I talked to you prior to purchasing the YF. It was a year to 18 months ago. I was going to come up and check out your YF, but never made the trip. I instead made a trip to Sarasota to ride with Wylie. On that trip, I was hooked and designed IT’LL DO to the smallest detail.
Before the Sarasota trip, I talked with a large number of 36YF owners. There were very few negatives and most were very consistant in saying, the boat handles great in rough water and if you feel like you are not running smoothly, pick up the speed a little more.
Last year, most boats passed me on the way in. This year things are much different.
So you in next weekend Phin? It’ll Do has invited you to fish on the 36yf now Billy on the Freeman. You scared? Where is the long Phin style report with actual facts and not speculation? These are suppose to the best of the best. What say ole bud we going fishing or not??
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

Anyways.
I have something for Bolbie. I know this is a Freeman thread, but here is the boat the first yellowfin is rumored to have been built off of. Bolbie, you should look into this one. Seriously.
You guys are really infatuated with speed aren’t you? You really care if you get passed by another boat on the way in? Seriously? LOL Hey, I like speed…but it’s not the end-all/be-all for me. I understand every person is different.
Is it such a huge surprise that nearly every 36 Yellowfin owner is happy with their purchase? Seriously, if you planned on spending $200k+ on a boat…would you not know exactly what you were getting and be sure of your likes/dislikes before dropping the money on the table? Of course they are happy with the boat! LOL
It isntr about another boat being passed or them passing me. I prefer to fish when and where I don’t even see another boat to be perfectly candid with u all.
It is about range, efficiency, and capability to me. My time is extremely valuable to me, and it weill become more valuable. I like to fish hard and at times when others usually don’t. I also like versatility and stuff that is capable of lots of dif stuff without compromise.
Honestly, my 21 mako would run fine witrh a 115 or 140 four stroke, but I have run my boat comfortably WOT with a 200hp in the ocean way too many times to not want more. I don’t want more if it means getting beat. I will take more if it cuts 45 minutes off a run and will get me home or out of trouble faster. It has nothing to do about other boats to me. If it did I’d never be happy. There will always be a bigger and faster boat- I don’t care who you are. When the limit’sd been reached with boats and yachts there will be somebody with a chinook chopper airlifting a boat whereever your high resd satellite is showing the tuna busting or the swords basking. Get bored catchin em then spear em. Get bored with that then harpoon them. Get bored with thay jump out of the chopper onto the fish with a knife in your mouth. There will always be a one-up. I want something that will do what me and my family enjoy very well. Nothing more. Sorry it looks like this is a contest.
Bolbie, I want to ride on the seavee. You can get some serious power in those things. Have never seen or known anybody that’s got one… That boat above is pretty affordable. Would be cool to test out. Looks great and is laid out well too. Needs some removable seating and audio equipment for the cruising… Not a big deal.
Bully, I am glad you are using some simrad stuff. Don’t tell skinnee how they’re based on that silly lowrance hds I use. Probably need to let him think you only use furuno stuff to keep him in line for a freeman 40.
Have you seen the nss touch screens or the nso 19" units? I really like them. Haven’t fished any of them before tho…
I’d like to see what the chirp module and ducer can do.

Actually, we were supposed to get two 19" displays with the NSO system, but they hadnt released them in April due to a minor glitch. They are out now though. Simrad is plain and simple, BADASS. Easy to use with functions that you can actually use.
We have installed Garmin, Furuno, and Simrad to this point. Those three have been the most popular. I get the most griping from customers about Furuno because it is not as intuitive. Once they learn it they love it.

I switched to cats when I was 25 years old. I had a 23 Seacraft that we used to run out to the stream on. I just got sick and tired of all
Its funny you can tell the guys on here who have never been on a big center console or a well made cat.
I also own a 36 Yellowfin here in Charleston. For the last couple months we have been down in Louisiana tuna fishing with all the Freemans, Twin Vees, Glacier Bays (they are everywhere), Contenders, Invincibles, etc. The weather is snotty most of the time and the runs are long.
We were all loaded down to fish with tons of fuel, ice, and gear. The weather was 2-3 on top of the 5-7s and the wind was normally out of the south at 15 -18 knots.
No matter what boat you are in this is a crappy ride. All of us cruised out at 15 -18 knots. My goal when running like this is no slamming as thats when things break. We all got out there within minutes of each other. We all caught fish and we all made it back. All these types of boats can handle this type of trip.
Now the Freeman and Twin Vees are awesome fishing platforms. The problem is they are 12 wide and not easily trailer able. If my boat was going to stay in a dock then I would highly consider a cat. But I trailer my boat all over the Southeast hence the monohull.
My boat tops out about 65MPH. It loves a following sea and can deal with a head sea. I dont normally push it to the limits because I take care of my things.
Who cares if your boat is 1 MPH faster or slower? I have never been able to run 65 offshore. My point is to each his own…
