Someone brought this up in another topic but I think it is worth it’s own discussion. I would like to keep this about how to replace a HOF type coach, but I know the haters will chime in.
I have said for the past few years I think USC need a younger OC to do the play calling. I think this is a great time to bring in that coach in a HCIW (head coach in waiting) situation. I do not like the HCIW situation but it makes sense for recruiting purposes.

Thoughts?
It wont work if OBS isn’t ready to give up the reigns… He seems like a control guy so don’t look for him to give it up until he is ready…
Yea a HCIW that isn’t Steve Jr., I totally see SOS playing along with that lol. You can barely get him to coach a team now you expect him to coach his/his sons replacement?
What a dreamer! I thought SOS had 5 more years isn’t it a little early to bring in a HCIW?
You can’t force him out, he has to retire and bow out gracefully. If you force him out it’s a Texas situation all over again, just with no tradition to fall back on. If Spurrier wants to milk the $4 million from the school for a few more years, there’s nothing you can do about it. Hell, you got a 90’ Fathead of the man hanging outside the stadium.
You can go the big name, home run hire with another coach edging toward the end of his career route. You could go the HCIW route, my guess is you’d end up with Ron Zook 2.0, even though Zook wasn’t a HCIW. Best case is to find a younger, up and coming Mid-Major coach and let him build something for the long haul that can be sustained over the years. I personally vote for you promoting Whammy to HC.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I’m excited to see Orth get a full 4 quarters. When he came in for Mitch against UNC Orth had 2 great completions and a great drive going after the offense was flat under Mitch. Then, the HBC puts Mitch back in after 3 downs?! A younger HBC would not have brought Mitch back in. He would have spread the defense with a hot qb and run the score up, in my opinion.

I heard Skip Holtz name thrown out there the other day. I think Spurrier wants to get the program in better shape and then walk away. He became much more active in recruiting this past season. I don’t think he will be the guy to hang on, but I may be totally wrong.
Chad Morris is already in the state where his next job is. Strong isn’t going to last at Texas and they’re going to want instant results on offense, easy hire for them.

It depends on what Saban wants to do. They will make it where he won’t be able to turn it down. Plus, the opportunity to win a NC at three different schools to cement his legacy…
