Spade Fish

Good Morning, I’m headed down from the midlands to fish Beaufort this weekend and was wondering if anyone has had any luck finding spades nearshore? It looks like it may be to much weather this weekend for my boat to go nearshore though, so what’s biting inshore? Tips greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Looks like it’s going to be rough offshore this weekend, Sunday might be OK. Plenty of spadefish on the reefs if you can get out there, but they are hard to fish for in choppy water.

Inshore, trout, reds, flounder, whiting…

Yeah I’ve been watching the weather, planning on staying close. Thanks for the info, are Cobia biting? I know we can’t keep them but would be fun to fish them.

I think you are referring to sheepshead, not spade fish. Spade fish don’t live there, or eat barnacles.

I mean spades catch them there all the time using fiddlers and they puke up barnacle juice when they come over they wont chew it off like a sheepshead

Nice catch! Do ya’ll catch any sheeps there?

sheepshead black drum and occasional cobia

Well I’ll be danged, learn something new every day :sunglasses: I stand corrected!

That’s crazy!! You sight cast to them once they come up? In the middle of the day?

yeah but they stay inside of the pilings along with sheepshead and drum so expect to lose a lot of tackle they stay with the shadow line of the bridge around the wood

Whoda thunk it??? Well done!

got a new boat that I cant slam against the pilings and no cobia in the river

jasmil1212, can you catch them all summer or just around cobia season? The reason I am asking is that last year while trying to sight fish for cobia on the Broad, I saw two spadefish doing the nasty at the surface. They were so into it that we motored right up to them. Wouldn’t bite anything but I’m not hungry either when I’m getting busy.

We saw them in the late 70’s hanging around the pilings under the bridge but never tried to catch one, glad to know they will eat fiddlers.
