I was at the tire reef on the 23rd and saw none. no jelly balls either.

my bad…the 9th

You talking about the drydock outta Fripp Inlet?
I think Ive heard people call it the tire reef.
So like a week ago?
Were the BSBs too thick to fish for anything else?

Saluda the Hilton head reef is the one that gets called the tire reef.

I was out recently, only saw two jelly balls in a long day of riding, no spades seen. Seems to me water temp bouncing around a little too low. Yes, BSB so thick you cannot effectively fish for anything else. Maybe they will get thinned out in June.

Was at the Ross this past weekend and would have paid $5 a piece for jellyballs Spades were everywhere. We looked for jellyballs on the way out but didn’t find a single one.

They have been trawling for jelly balls in the area and sold to the asian market. Last year they cleared them out! Couldn’t find a jelly to save my life for spade fishing!

I saw quite a few in the river while cobia fishing the past three days.

If you can’t find jellyballs, try a small strip of cut squid along with a small strip of cellophane from a cigarette pack wrapper. The cellophane provides the translucent shine they like. Many times we have caught them on cellophane only, but a little piece of squid helps.

I thought that was still in the proposal stages? I can’t fathom enough trawling off our coast to clear out all the jelly balls?

As easy as they are to grab with a dip net, I’d imagine trawling for those things could add up quickly.

There was an article in the Edisto News last year. Pretty sure it was being done all last season. Ya they would load up fast. All i know is this time last year there were a lot of shrimp boats off of Edisto and in June there was not a jelly ball to be found. Coincidence? Maybe.

Fred I believe the proposal you are talking about was for the processing plant to be put in…

Larry, sounds as if I need to start smoaking again! Have used small pcs of shrimp, never thaught about the celephane!

Finally! A reason to continue smoking. Thanks, Larry! My girl is going to love hearing that. I’ll just tell her you said it was okay, and that you’re always right. I’ll give her your number if she has any questions

I was out fishin for spades one day at 6HI and stopped for a lunch break. I tossed pieces of rind from my honeydew melon out…and the spades smacked 'em. Just sayin…

Oh…canned clams work some days. Good to have a can or two aboard just in case. Also…if you make it out to the ledge (30 fathom curve) and spend some time over structure, you might see some monster spades. I’ve seen some out there likely to break the state and/or world record.
