Out at the 6HI and everywhere back in today…no spades yet…sheepshead, triggerfish, weakfish, grouper, and naturally lots of BSBs. Found big fat jellyballs once the sun got up good, closer to the beach, and in about 6 feet of water, not on the surface…not in high numbers either but enough, just no spades.
I know its on youtube but I can’t find it. How to use a jellyball for bait???

Here’s a link to a Power Point I did some time ago as a teaching aid…
Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Nice PP wildlifesc, thanks for the info.
We do not rise to the occassion…but fall to the level of our training
I made a make shift rig last year out of 2 cloths hangers(the thin white ones from the cleaners,i usually use one of these on my jelly ball teaser).Basically just slid like 8 shrimp on each hanger, connected the 2 attached around 12oz of weight, tied the other end off to the reel. I also cut up 3 or 4 big shrimp and scattered it out as I slid my homemade rig in.Worked every bit as good as jelly ball rig I have.
So have any of ya’ll ever used your teaser ball dropped down to the bottom to lure them up to the surface? I have always just used it on top to lure them closer to the boat.
Saturday we didn’t see any on the surface and I suggested to cap’n that we drop one down and see if anything happened. He thought there was no use.
I have not fished for them much but when they are there you don’t need to drop down far IMO.
I have a cool setup I use that I will post either pics of or a vid soon tho!
That is a cool PP Jim posted.
They pull like hell and are a riot…I use my redfish inshore rigs with 20lb braid for a good time…can’t beat watching them eat the bait either.
To give credit where due, G8RNSC (Blair) gave me all the info to catch Spades. He does not post alot but has helped me alot. Goin after that new state record soon:smiley: LOL.

Spades were thick at the 60 yesterday. There must have been at least 3 different schools. I saw one that could have easily hit the 5lb mark. Didn’t see a jellyball anywhere.

For a teaser we always used an old style fish stringer, the kind with a spike on one end and ring on the other. Thread a 16 oz sinker on it and about a dozen jelly balls. Slice them up a little to let the juices flow.
And remember to leave a hooked fish in the water. It fires up the rest of them and the school won’t leave the decoy. Don’t be greedy, these fish are easy to over-fish. I always release the decoy, makes me feel better

That’s what we used last year, the old rope stringer.
No being greedy here, I rarely keep a fish actually, If I keep one its to give to a friend or weigh in for a tourney. I fish more for the fun of and it some pictures to look at. I’m not a big fish eater, just enjoy to fish.
Have a friend down from the upstate that wants to find a big brown fish so I was thinking about checking the wrecks for them, and check for spades while we are there…

I’m the same way Nic. If it’s just me, family or friends we might keep one each and release the rest. They are a ball to catch on light tackle and very easy once you know how. 20 years ago when I was running charter boats with 6 passengers and everybody wanted to keep a mess of fish, I’m embarrassed to tell you how many we used to keep:roll_eyes: Spadefish have saved many a charter trip. I’m paying penance now

Sorry 'bout the lack of narrative on the PowerPoint. It was an aid when I was teaching. I too use the old-timey fish stringer as a teaser holder Larry.
As to teasing 'em up…it can be done. Drop a couple of jelly balls down, then when the spades start feeding you’ll feel it and can ease them up. Works well when the water is a little choppy. I’ve even used a clothes pin (wooden or plastic) around the teaser line I dropped to put a rigged bait down with the teaser. They bite, swim off, pull it free and GOTCHA!
Of course, we’ve all been out when the spade dance was on but nary a bite…which has to do with their mating/spawning.

A mask, snorkel and pole spear will fill the cooler if they don’t bite:smiley:

Cracker Larry and Wildlifesc,
Thank you both for the insight. I have figured on trying to take my son out and let him have some success fishing. Between the spades and the BSB coming open in the next week or so, he should have a good time.
Hopefully everyone has a conscious(sp??)and only take what they need. This way our grandchildren and theirs will have fish to go after, provided the feds don’t close everything.

Spades are not at the 45 yet, or at least they were not wednesday…we had all the jellyballs we could possibly want but didn’t see a single spade. BSB are so thick its stupid. Caught 7 on one piece of cut squid before the last one finally got it off the hook. Bait would not even get to the bottom. Cudas were getting fat off the BSB going back in.
Had two good runs that got broke off on live bait near the bottom…we had the wreck all to ourselves. Caught a small grouper on the sabiki which I thought was weird, along with some illusive BSB’s.
Only taker on our jellyball stringer was about a 10ft shark that took a good swipe at them right behind the boat.
Ended the day catching some more BSB on boiled peanuts!
Also saw big schools of menhaden in the broad early morning and we had plenty of jellyballs in less than 5 minutes.
