Sullivan's island

Finally a shark to brag about. Caught on a small sharp nose.

Nice shark. Are you riding that thing with shark fin underwear on? First picture is funny. It’s like a semi captain Morgan pose.

Where on Sullivan’s were you? By ft moultrie? Went down early this morning on cut mullet and had no luck. Also what were you using as bait? If you don’t mind providing info.

We were on station 26 just south of a big sand bar. Used whiting to catch a sharp nose. Used the smaller shark to get the big boy.

Went again this morning. The mullet run is officially on. So much bait in the water. Got some decent finger mullet and heaved them out. Got some nice what I think are fine tooth’s.

Underwear… trunks… same thing I guess. But yeah, that’s my dumb ass on the shark. First thing we actually got to pull in on my new senator 6/0 rod/reel. It’s a bit of a fight with how quick it reels, but I’m sure it can handle more.

On a side note, something big (really big) hooked in to the senator and our other big rod… but bit through the 100# braid, taking with it 3ft of 135# steel cable leader and everything down the line. Time to put a longer leader cable on.

And all we came with was shrimp and some killer bee brand frozen finger mullet. I don’t think anything bit on the frozen mullet, but the food chain process works well if you start with shrimp. Caught some whiting first, used that to catch a foot long sharpnose, then used the little sharpnose (be-headed, bled, and gutted) on a 14/0 circle hook to get the big boy.

You are missing an important element to you set up which is the shock leader. The sharks skin and tail will break 100lb braid without any problem. Get yourself 20+ feet of heavy 400lb mono (5-6 feet if casting). The shock leader prevents abrasion from breaking the braid.

Caught a bonnet head off of Sullivan’s by the Fort… About 4 ft on squid… Released

So I am new to the area and new to salt water fishing. Trying to learn as much as I can with the intention of getting a ~24ft CC next year. I am curious, what is the purpose of targeting shark while fishing? What is there to do with them? Are they being eaten? I have spent some time on the folly pier and how would you even get one up that high? Or if you are surf fishing and get it on the beach, then what? I saw signs on folly pier saying you could not intentionally target sharks, but the few people I was talking to were doing just that, targeting large shark. I am not going to wine about sharks and the 1000’s of people swimming very close by, but back home, we certainly didn’t bait bears, wolves or mountain lions in RV parks. Again, not complaining, just trying to understand. This is not right or wrong, but we were raised (and my kids now) on you eat what you hunt/catch. And sure, the occasional tree rat (grey squirrel)didn’t make it through the day so I am not one with my nose in the air or looking down at people for what they do. Just trying to understand so we can fully enjoy the ocean fishing scene.

Easy now, you’re on a slippery slope with these shark guys, to each his own. If swimming in the low country waters, I would not be afraid of the sharks, I would worry about gettin’ stuck by a Stingray ( which I have expirenced ). Worst pain I have EVER felt. Or stepping on a Sea urchin. The sharks in the “surf”, Atlantic Sharpnose, Bonnet Head, Sandbar, Black nose even tha occasional small Blacktip are for the most part no threat to sensible swimmers.

Welcome to CF.com!

“If it were catching, Everyone would be good at it.”

What I guess we didn’t mention is the fact that we paddle the baits out a few hundred yards to target these sharks. At that’s also the beauty of fishing you can choose what we want to keep. Same way we don’t shoot every thing we see. Also we try not to fish near a crowded beach.

Agree about the pain from a stingray, got stung this summer by a little baby because I underestimated him since he was so small and handled him, maybe the worst pain I’ve ever felt. Fought through it and didnt go to the ER, the worst pain lasted 2-3 hours. I cant imagine what a larger one would have felt like.

Nice bonnet head

Sharks are plentiful here when other fish are not in the peak of the summer, so if you don’t have a boat and like to fish, sharks it is. They fight like hell and are cool to see, just look at the crowds when someone brings one up on the beach.

REALLY nice fat bonnethead there, one of the biggest I’ve seen.

Aquasport Osprey 175 CC

Nice sharks. I was down there that same day but left at Noon. Didnt catch any sharks of size but glad to see someone is. Used finger mullet live and cut bait with little luck. Will be out this weekend to try the luck again.

What’s wrong with catch/release?

You’d be surprised how many people on this forum are strong believers in catch/release.

The population isn’t shrinking, and the local fishing pressure is getting stronger, if you keep everything you catch certain resources would be damaged.

oh, don’t get me wrong, certainty not criticizing the sport. Just trying to understand what the draw is. so what is read is they are strictly a catch and release fish. they are fun to catch because they fight good. i would say the same for large mouth bass, since I don’t like the taste of them, I catch them because they are fun.

was actually down at the pier today with my son. got some quick rod/reels from Dicks last night. spent most of the day there. interesting that my son caught 2 18" shark while we were there and another gentleman caught a 3 footer and a 4 footer. actually, that is all people were catching. seems like the little 18" guys are more of a waste of time since you can’t do anything with them. they just take your bait and get thrown back in. however, it was interesting watching the guy reel in the 2 big ones. even more interesting using that basket contraption to get it up to the peer. I had no clue how he would get it up there.

now I only ask because I dont want to get in trouble, but do people get in trouble for purposely targeting shark? I was pretty obvious what people were doing and I haver seen many signs saying no shark fishing…

Scheerce- it is a adrenaline rush for sure and its just a fun sport. Shark fishing on the pier isnt suppose to happen and your not suppose to use a basket to raise a shark. But with that said using cut bait doesnt mean your targeting sharks. Alot of fish will eat cut bait so technically the people arent just targeting sharks.

Catching 3-4 ft sharks is not “shark fishing” that’s by catch for surf fishermen.
