Looking to match my squall 15 with a rod simply for casting distance. Using as a pin rig rod for pier fishing so the only importance is distance with a 6 oz sinker. Any recommendations on best make/length? Been hard to find an actual casting rod in 12-15ft
I’ve not seen many that length around here either. I know that some of the tackle shops up on The Outer Banks sell them. A lot of surf fisherman up there use casting reels. I would think one of our local shops could order one for you.

I am looking at either breakaway MDX or lamiglass rods. Was just hoping someone around here had experience with either I will be ordering online, local shop might be able order but I enjoy getting product in few days compared to a few weeks ha.
I heard that the 12’s and greater outcast the shorter rods which make since but it also takes more technique to finesse in small areas making them harder to cast between being 12+ ft and the length of the rig. But I was looking at some custom made carbon fiber rods and they claim to outcast other rods but I can’t find a sole who has anything to say about them or anything other then about them other than the website. They range from 16-23ft and I would only use them to cover different areas of the water and for light trolling like outriggers t have a wider spread with just rods. www.squidjig.com cfs monster surf rods even if your not interested a opinion would be nice because I can’t find any ■■■■■■■■ on them and am interested.
Those rods seem very heavy compared to amount of weight they can actually throw. Most rods that are 12-15ft can throw 6-12oz, but those show only 4? something weird about that.
Kevin, look at the Daiwa Emcast or Oceanmaster. I have an American Rodsmiths, which the OceanMaster is identical ,12’, 6-12oz. If you want to put your squall on it and try it out a few times. I’ll be out Sat., weather permitting.

Thanks for the offer but can’t make it out Saturday. I will take a look at those tho, I hate paying a lot for just a heaver haha.
Whenever you want to try it out, Stop by the house. I’m on JI.
Also, look at Okuma Longitude

I have a 12’ and a 13’. They do cast further, but it can be a pain to cast them accurately sometimes. You have to use both hands and really throw your whole body into it. What I do is set it up with a shark rig, fling it out as far as I can, and then do most of my fishing closer with normal size rods. To me the sweet spot is around 9’. Light enough to where I can handle it one handed, but long enough to get pretty close to the range I get out of my 12’.
I bought a 12’ heaver from Red Drum Tackle in Buxton, NC ( Cape Hatteras), a few years back and love it. Chucks 8 and bait like nobody’s business.
I’ve got a 12’ star stellar casting rod. It a 60-40 split rod. It’ll cast 8 oz as far as you need it. It’s only been used a couple of times. I bought a boat so I don’t plan on ever using it again. Pm me if you interested.

best surf rods i have ever used. i have rods ranging from 10ft-14ft. the longer rod will give you more distance, but your casting technique will determine that. do a search on youtube for Tommy Farmer casting and you will see some good stuff.
I have a 12 ft that I purchased from Red Drum tackle also, good stiff rod. The secret is to use a casting reel. I have a shimano Calcutta on mine. You can easily cast 70-80yards. I’ve seen some guys cast 100 yards but they practice casting on football fields.
Breakaway makes good rods, never heard of the MDX but Ive thrown the LDX and the HDX and they are both great rods. CCP are great rods as well, I think Tommy is still the reigning US distance casting champ and he put a lot of research into his rod development.
Check out AnyFish AnyWhere rods on the surfishingFlorida website; they are well made and cast well. I think they are being marketed as Florida Surf Angler rods.
Depending on your budget, the 2 top names in distance casting are Zziplex and Century, both are from the UK. Most of the competitive casters in the US and Europe use these 2 brands.
As far as length, I would not go over 13’. I had a 15’ All-Star anchor rod years ago; great quality rod but I just couldn’t get any distance out of it.
That Star Stellar is worth taking a look at. I have the 11’ model and its capable of some good distances.

Thank you very much for the info. Gonna try star rod with the squall. To the football fields I will go haha
Make sure to use a shock leader; 12’ is a lot of rod!

I usually use 20# main and 40# shock
10 lbs of shock leader per ounce of lead thrown is the standard in power casting. 12’ rod throwing 6 ounces for max distance with 40 lb shocker is a dangerous combination. Crack-offs are bad news!

How long a leader?
I love my St Croix Mojo 12’ paired on MXL raptor. Maybe because I am new to casting conventional, but its a lot more fun to try and get distance than with a spinner. After only a handful of trips I can throw further than I could ground cast any of my spinning setups as well.
